Compass Instruments, LLC, Tomball,

Texas is now accepting orders for their

new patented safety device that not

only provides superior data, but also

provides almost instantaneous

shutdown when the smart sensor

determines an over pressure condition

is about to occur.

No matter if you are fracturing or

cementing a well, pumping liquid

nitrogen to blow out a pipeline,

pumping through a coil tubing unit, or

what ever the application; we all know

that accidents can happen. And the

damage to personnel and equipment

can be devastating.

This new device resides on each pump

between the control system and the

discharge pressure transmitter and

has wireless communication with the

data van..

Upon power up, it auto-calibrates the

pressure transmitter without changing

the signal level sent back to the control

system. As soon as the auto-calibrate

function is finished, the device will

output a clean, corrected, super

accurate 4 to 20 milliamp signal to

the control instrumentation.

The discharge pressure input to the

regular pump controller can be

calibrated by implementing a pressure

‘CAL’ command. This causes the

smart sensor to output 20 milliamps

A monitoring system inside the data

van allows operator input for setting

the over pressure shutdown value.

This information is then sent to each

pump unit via a wireless transceiver.

Each pump unit then responds by

sending back the actual discharge

pressure.

The data van monitoring system also

receives information from the well

head pressure transmitter. The well

head pressure and the over pressure

shutdown is displayed in larger

numbers in the upper portion of the

display. On the lower portion of the

display, the over pressure shutdown

value is plotted against the actual well

head pressure, with time and date.

The data received from each pumping

unit, the wellhead pressure, the over

pressure shutdown value, and the

time and date are all saved in memory

and may be exported to a USB

memory stick.

We believe

every life has

considerable

value. We

want to do

everything

we can to

protect those

we love and

our fellow

workers.

The Smart Sensor

At the heart of this unit is the Smart Sensor which synchronizes and

communicates with the discharge pressure transmitter, calibrating the

internal circuitry to the actual range of the pressure transmitter.

The input signal from the discharge pressure transmitter is also affected by

special proprietary circuitry to reduce or eliminate the pressure spikes

caused by the action of the fluid ends.

Working with clean data allows the pressure slope to be calculated to

determine if an over pressure condition is about to occur, if so, a shutdown

command is given immediately to both the engine and transmission.

This unit also contains a two line display which indicates discharge pressure

on one line and the over pressure shutdown value on the other. In the

event the pressure transmitter is out of range or not functioning, this

information will also be displayed.

Finally, a shutdown output connects to the engine and transmission to stop

the pump when a hazardous condition occurs. From the time the hazardous

condition occurs until the shutdown output is activated should be less than

10 milliseconds.

A shutdown command may also be implemented in the data van and

transmitted via the wireless system to every pump, while this can be

broadcast quickly to all the pumps at the same time, it must be understood

that the wireless transmission is not instantaneous.

“Warning” and “strobe” outputs are triggered when the pressure in the high

pressure line exceeds 20 and 30 PSI respectively. A strobe light is supplied

with the system and can connect to either of these outputs to let the

operators know that there is still pressure in the high pressure line.

H & H Technical Services has been contracted to install and certify all these

systems. They will first check to see what engines and transmissions are on

your units, verify how they are programmed, then define what signal is

required for shutdown and which connector and pin we should connect to.

Custom over-molded cables are then made and H & H Technical Services

will schedule a time to install and certify the system on each truck.

The Data Van Display

Data is displayed on a

monitor with a display

area 23” wide and only

9.75” tall. Wireless linking

with all the pump units on

location is automatic and

requires no special

operator skills.

With the data van in place

and powered up, apply

power to each of the

pump units one at a time

and they will be displayed

on the screen in the order

in which they were

initialized.

As they initialize, any

errors detected on the pump

will be displayed. Non criti-

cal errors will disappear

when acknowledged.

Critical errors may require

maintenance, such as

replacing a bad cable or

changing out a pressure

transmitter that is out of

range.

Critical errors will clear

automatically when the

problems causing the errors

have been corrected.

Once the errors are clear,

the pump’s discharge

pressure is displayed on

the left side of the screen.

Up to 40 pump units may be

used with one display.

The display is driven by a

computer mounted on a

plate just behind the display.

A cable from the computer

connects to a joystick which

allows the operator to clear

non-critical errors, set the

over pressure shutdown

limit, and do other general

functions.

The computer also connects

to a wireless module which

communicates with all the

pump units.

the van. The function of this unit is to

filter the 4-20 milliamp signal from the

wellhead for display, charts, and/or

data logging.

This unit also has a serial output that

connects to the data van display.

Wellhead pressure and over pressure

shutdown are displayed in large

numbers across the top area of the

display. On the lower part of the

display these same two values are

plotted on the screen real time, with

time and date.

The Over Pressure Shutdown is the pres-

sure not to exceed. Since this can be dif-

ferent on every job, it must be program-

mable. It can be easily incremented or

decremented using the joy stick.

If the wellhead pressure gets close to the

over pressure shutdown value, the

displayed values will change color. If it

actually reaches the over pressure

shutdown value, the displayed values will

be bright red.

The wellhead pressure transmitter

connects to a smart sensor in the back of

Wellhead Pressure &

Over Pressure Shutdown

“Having clear

decisive data is

enough to settle

many disputes”

Page 4: C- Smart Over Pressure System

From the beginning, our motto has been,

“Innovation with Direction.” We feel this is

another product that is worthy of our motto.

It provides stable pressure data for display and data logging.

It checks and auto calibrates the discharge and well head pres-

sure transmitters.

It provides a considerably faster output for over pressure to set

the engine to idle and the transmission to neutral.

And the smart feature of being able to predict an over pressure

condition before it happens can:

Prevent injury and/or death of personnel.

Prevent the destruction of valuable equipment.

Prevent exceeding the rating of the high pressure iron.

Prevents exceeding the over pressure set point—so pre-

vents liability of damage to well.

OTHER FEATURES A warning output provides a signal to a remote

indicator light and is active when there is more

than 20 PSI (this is programmable) in the high

pressure line.

A strobe output provides a signal to a remote

strobe light (supplied) and is active when there

is more than 30 PSI (again programmable) in

the high pressure line.

COMPASS INSTRUMENTS, LLC

Compass Instruments, LLC “Innovation with Direction”

Compass Instruments has been providing industrial electronic instrumentation to oil/gas well service companies since

2007. In 2011 we became Compass Instruments, LLC. And in 2013 we added a complete sheet metal fabrication

shop. In 2014 we purchased our own facility in Tomball, Texas and now have our electronics instrumentation group

and sheet metal fabrication group all under one roof.

Compass Instruments, LLC is large enough to supply your instrumentation needs, yet small enough to react to your

specific requirements. We are well staffed with a great group of knowledgeable and caring employees who have many

years of experience.

Other companies attempt to play the game of competition, building products as economically as possible to fight for

market share over price. We feel we have no competition on the standard products we sell because we better un-

derstand our market. Therefore we want our products to be designed smarter, be made with higher quality compo-

nents, operate over a wider temperature range, stand up to higher shock and vibration, and have functions that just

make sense.

It is true that we do not always compete with others on price, but then you get what you pay for. For example our

12VDC to 24VDC converter outputs 10 amps. We have a competitor who builds a unit with the same form, fit, and

function—they begin failing after two years, and by year four, they will for sure have to be replaced. We begin selling

our unit in 2008 and have since sold thousands, and to date have never had one returned from the field because it

failed. Cost? Ours is about twice the cost initially. But you will pay more to have a technician replace theirs than

what the difference is. And then we won’t consider the cost of a failure during a critical point in a job.

WHAT IS PROVIDED WITH THIS SYSTEM?

The C-SMART SAFETY SYSTEM is supplied as a

complete system with everything needed and even

includes installation and certification.

On each pumping unit, it connects between your 4-

20 mA pressure transmitter and your instrumentation.

Custom cables connect to the engine and transmis-

sion for quick shut-down in the event of a hazardous

condition.

The Data Van unit connects between the 4-20 mA

pressure transmitter at the well head and the data

van pressure input.
