CHRIST THE KING LUTHERAN CHURCH 1505 S. FORD STREET, REDLANDS, CA 92373 (909) 793-5703 ctkredlands.org MESSAGE FROM PASTOR SMITH MARCH 2020 Greetings dearly beloved of Christ the King; The Lord be with you. C ORNERSTONE On June 14 th , 2020 we will celebrate the 50 th anniversary of our beloved congregation. It is a bit of a competition between various dates as to when Christ the King was officially formed. Ergo it is a bit of a competition between various dates as to when our anniversary truly is. This article intends to provide a sliver of history regarding these dates. Perhaps after hearing of all the truly remarkable movement during that time that your head will spin. God was clearly at work to bring all things together for good. I hope that y’all will see, and approve gladly, why the day that the church at the corner of Ford Street and South Avenue was dedicated serves well as the premier day in our congregation’s history and that that day is best suited as our “anniversary.” In the late summer of 1941, Sunday services began in the Redlands YMCA by a group of Lutherans. This group was a mission offshoot of Trinity Lutheran Church in San Bernardino. In May of 1942 they called a pastor – Rev. Kirk Brink. In January of 1945 they purchased property on the corner of Church and Colton Streets. A dedication service was held on May 12 th , 1946 and the congregation was called Christ Lutheran Church. By May of 1956, Christ Lutheran Church was a self-supporting congregation and they burned their mortgage. On March 21, 1965 a new group of Lutherans began worship services in town. This group was officially recognized by the Southern California District of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod in January of 1967. St. Mark’s Lutheran Church was the name of the congregation and they first began meeting in Kimberly Elementary School. St. Mark’s had a strong membership with a very determined set of lay leaders, some of whom are still members of our happy congregation. Whether it was something the district or the council of St. Mark’s did is unclear, but in preparation for this congregation’s future the property at Ford St. and South Ave. was purchased. During the calendar year of 1967, a critical decision was made by all parties. It was clear that two Missouri Synod congregations in the relatively small town of Redlands did not make super great sense and that these two bodies of believers could do much more together than they could apart. By December of 1967, three resolutions were approved by each congregation. 1. They were to merge the two congregations. 2. They were to call the new congregation Christ the King Lutheran Church. 3. They were to appoint a steering committee to conduct the affairs until officers could be elected. All proceeded smoothly. On January 21 st , 1968 a call was extended to the Rev. Eugene R. Paulus to serve as the first pastor of Christ the King Lutheran Church of Redlands. Pr. Paulus accepted and was joyfully installed on March 10 th , 1968. On August 23 rd , 1969, a ground breaking ceremony was held on the current church property. It was a remarkably barren piece of land and the congregation’s members and friends brought shovels and formed a huge human cross, and in that formation broke the ground on which was built the house of grace in which so many have received the Service of Christ the King in Word and Sacrament. The architectural design and the builder had already been selected and approved and so less than a year (Continued on page 2)

MESSAGE FROM PASTOR SMITH MARCH 2020

Greetings dearly beloved of Christ the King; The Lord be with you.

CORNERSTONE

On June 14th, 2020 we will celebrate the 50th anniversary of our beloved congregation. I hope that y’all will see, and approve gladly, why the day that the church at the corner of Ford Street and South Avenue was dedicated serves well as the premier day in our congregation’s history and that that day is best suited as our “anniversary.”

In the late summer of 1941, Sunday services began in the Redlands YMCA by a group of Lutherans. This group was a mission offshoot of Trinity Lutheran Church in San Bernardino. In May of 1942 they called a pastor – Rev. Kirk Brink. In January of 1945 they purchased property on the corner of Church and Colton Streets.

By December of 1967, three resolutions were approved by each congregation.

later the completed church wing of our beautiful campus was complete. That day, the dedication of Christ the King Lutheran Church, was June 14th, 1970. It was a culminating event that encompassed so very much that had led up to that point that it was informally adopted as our anniversary.

Rehearsing all that took place in the lead up to the dedication of the new church instills a deep appreciation for what we have received. God is supremely faithful and

has provided a path through time for us all, provided a Good Shepherd who gives us all we need for this life of faith, and devoted mothers and fathers in the faith who have sacrificed much, who proved themselves wise in their decisions, and who were faithful stewards of both spiritual and temporal gifts of God. We all look forward to celebrating a common life of grace lived out in this place. June 14th will be a heavenly day and when we arrive there, we will give God our thanks and praise as we receive His blessing anew.

Peace be with you,

Pastor Smith
