From the Rabbi I will always remember the last conversation with my Papa, Morris Gaber, may his memory be for a blessing. I had made a special trip to visit him and my other grandpar-ents while I was doing some work for USY. Our visit was brief; I shared my activi-ties with him and he encouraged me to visit when I could but that I was doing “good stuff.” As we said goodbye, he gave me a $20 hand-shake and I left. What I didn’t realize at that moment was that would be the last time I saw him or spoke with him, because that night, he had a brain hemorrhage and would pass away several days later. His influence on my life did not end with his death. In fact, there are times when I keenly feel his influence, and the influ-ence of all of my loved ones, and in their own way they continue to influence me in the present and help me shape my future. As individuals and as a community, we make it a point to remember our loved ones in a for-mal way through the Yizkor prayers which we recite four times a year on Yom Kippur, Shmini Atzeret, Passover and Shavuot. Yizkor and Mourner’s Kaddish are not meant just for our im-mediate relatives; we also should make time to remember those who have influenced our lives. During my Yizkor prayers, in addition to remem-bering my grandparents and my mother, I al-ways spend a few moments remembering Len Ring, a congregant from my first synagogue, who taught me about humor and life, and I re-member my classmate, Deb, who was tragically killed during a car accident as she walked home from school and others who have influenced my life or taught me a life lesson. I have become a better person and a better Rabbi because of them and it is my responsibility to remember them. Yizkor is that moment when we are called to witness their lives and their values and as we do so, we continue to learn from them. What are the customs and the rules for Yiz-kor? When do we stay in the service and when do we leave? Here is what the Observant Life: The Wisdom of Conservative Judaism for Con-temporary Jews wrote,

It is also customary in many congregations for indi-viduals whose parents are still living to leave the sanctuary just before Yizkor. Most rabbis today feel that this practice, rooted in the superstitious belief that being present for Yizkor will somehow tempt fate into bringing about one’s parents’ untimely de-mise, should be discouraged. Most synagogues to-day, therefore, encourage all members of the con-gregation to remain in the sanctuary for Yizkor. After all, these prayers are said for all relatives, not

just parents, as well as for the martyrs of Israel throughout history and, in many congregations, especially for those who died during the Shoah or in defense of the State of Israel. Many other congrega-tions make special note of the victims of terrorism, both at home and abroad, in their memorial prayers. To absent oneself from such a moving and deeply meaningful prayer service for purely superstitious reasons does not seem like worthy behavior and should be discouraged. Individuals whose parents formally instruct them not to remain in the sanctuary for Yizkor, however, should obey those instructions without mocking their parents’ fears or beliefs. (Observant Life, page 304)

While I encourage you to remain for the Yiz-kor service, each of us has to do what is most meaningful and comfortable for us as individuals and for our families. Much of what I do as a Rabbi and as a person has been shaped by members of my various communities and for that I will always remember them for a blessing. While I know that there are those who will leave before Yizkor out of respect for family custom, I encourage you to join us this year on Yom Kip-pur afternoon for a special Service of Remem-brance which will give us a few minutes to re-member those who have shaped our lives to this moment. May the memory of our loved ones al-ways be a blessing to us.

Rabbi Aaron Gaber

As we approach the upcoming holidays we are reminded of the words which are mentioned repeatedly between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur: Teshuvah, Te-fillah, and Tzedakah. What will they mean to you in 5776? What have they meant to you in 5775? As we are now starting our third year as co-presidents here at CBOI we have learned a great deal about the ideas of Teshuvah, Tefillah, and Tzedakah and have seen what those ideas mean when they cross over into the daily existence of a synagogue.

Teshuvah can be loosely translated to mean “repentance” or “return”. It is comprised of three ingredients: regret of misdeed, decision to change, and verbal expression of one’s sins. It is human nature to succeed at the first two ingredients as we all are easy to regret our misdeeds and our 'promise' to change. It is normally the third ingre-dient where people will struggle; the requirement to express what our sins have been and to seek forgiveness from those who we have offended. This is a particularly difficult exercise for most, if not all, people but it is an expectation that we must seek the forgiveness from those we have offended if we are truly repentant. For all those who have been presidents of CBOI before us, you understand the struggles we have in trying to do the best job we can. We receive con-flicting opinions on every subject, whether it is one person reminding us that our Board meetings go too long or the other person who is offended be-cause we stifle discussions. Some members of our congregation believe that we are too relaxed in our enforcement of 'conservative' Judaism while others believe that we are not properly changing with the times. We continue to struggle with the role of non-Jewish spouses here in the synagogue and how to be inclusive without offending those with traditional beliefs. These are all time honored struggles which any past president can smile quietly and acknowledge. Over the past year we have had major changes here at CBOI, not the least of which was incorpo-rating a new rabbi into the methods and customs of our shul. We also finally sold the property in

Trenton, established an endowment, paid off all the debts of the synagogue, changed the pricing for the Hebrew school, installed equipment to help those with hearing aids, transferred the statue of David from Trenton to Newtown, installed a walk-ing path to the rabbi's house, revised the bylaws and constitution, oversaw the creation and re-invigoration of many committees and watched a small shul be more busy than most twice its size. Why do we mention all the items which we have done and overseen over the past year? Be-cause it is very likely that we have offended some of you during that time. We have often said 'yes' when you wanted a 'no'. We have said 'no' when you wanted a 'yes'. We have made and approved changes that people do not want because we be-lieve it is in the long term interest of the syna-gogue. These choices and decisions were often hard because we knew that we would offend some people by changing the status quo. We never in-tended to offend but we refused to shy away from difficult issues just because they were difficult. Some of our decisions were wrong but when they are we acknowledge them and move on to a bet-ter idea. We apologize to anyone we offended or wronged. Please accept our apology. We have many hard decisions to be made this year so we suspect we will re-offend some and newly offend others. Hopefully we will all be here at the end of 5776 so that we may ask your forgiveness once again.

Religious School

Baruchim habaim–welcome! We hope that the summer has been safe and enriching, and I look forward to personally welcoming you and your family back to our school this fall.

AND IT BEGINS……WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 9 for GRADES 3-7 4:30 - 6:30 PM PARENTS ARE INVITED TO A MEET AND GREET AT 5:45 PM

SUNDAY CLASSES BEGIN SEPTEMBER 27

This year we are initiating the PRAYER PART-NERSHIP PROGRAM. We strive to make Jewish learning an experiential learning experience for all students. Students will have opportunity to partic-ipate in prayer services throughout the year, lead-ing Congregation in prayers learned in class. Stu-dents will be assigned to specific Shabbat services and prayers where they will be able to celebrate Shabbat in real time! Calendar of assigned Prayer Partnership dates will be sent home at the begin-ning of the school year for September to December and in December for January to May. You are your child’s first Jewish educator. We thank you for allowing us to be your partner. As we approach the new year, 5776, I prepare my heart for the coming year. It is a time for re-flection and "teshuvah", an opportunity to change, reflect and turn our world around. I want to share with you a poem, (it has made the rounds of the internet, but in case you didn't see, it, I am shar-ing it.) It is all in how we look at things, Let's truly turn things around and look at the positive, work together and find the good in all we are blessed to have and share. It all started when Chanie Gorkin, who is ap-parently an 11th grader at Beth Rivkah High School in Crown Heights, submitted a clever poem called “Worst Day Ever?” to PoetryNation.com. The poem reads:

Today was the absolute worst day ever And don’t try to convince me that There’s something good in every day Because, when you take a closer look, This world is a pretty evil place. Even if Some goodness does shine through once in a while Satisfaction and happiness don’t last. And it’s not true that It’s all in the mind and heart Because True happiness can be attained Only if one’s surroundings are good It’s not true that good exists I’m sure you can agree that The reality Creates

My attitude It’s all beyond my control And you’ll never in a million years hear me say Today was a very good day Now read it from bottom to top, the other way, And see what I really feel about my day.

So to all of our students, their families, our staff and the entire synagogue family, I wish us a year filled with learning, wonderful Jewish experiences and blessings! Each of us working together, can turn our world around! Hatzlacha to everyone – good luck … in the year

ahead. Shalom,

Joan

CBOI Community Garden Thanks to all those who helped with the BOI Community Garden. We actually grew something!!!!!! ….besides weeds Re cently I brought about 20lbs of cucumbers, zucchini, tomatoes and one tiny eggplant to the food bank in Bristol. We have made Sunday morning at 9:00AM a time for picking and maintenance on a regular basis. Please come out to help. Special thanks to Jeff Leventhal who took some pictures (including the one on the left) of the Garden/ volunteers. An article acompanied by one of these pix appeared recently in the Jewish Exponent. BTW, if you haven’t seen it, we now have a pumpkin plant that’s about 25 feet long. I guess pumpkin plants and chicken sh..t work well together. Regards, Farmer Dan

Avoiding War I just finished watching Schindler’s List and yes again my eyes were full of tears that I could only see a blurred final scene when Oscar Schindler broke down with emotion “I could have saved more Jews”. I cry again because of an increase in Holocaust deniers and a U.N. Security Council’s unanimous approval of the U.S./Iran negotiated deal without regards to the Israel Eradication threat. The Iran agreement will allow the lifting of commer-cial and military sanctions, about $ 60-150 billion going into the coffers of Iran, and a remarkably flexible and impossible to execute inspections with verifications. Iran touted that they got everything they wanted from the agreement while chanting “Death to America” and “Death to the Jews” and burning American and Israeli flags. Clearly no one wants to see Iran with a nuclear bomb but their goal is toward that objective. It is a matter of time before Iran develops an atomic bomb whether it is in a few years or when the 15 year agreement expires, which at that time they will be able to fulfill their ambition legally. Another agree-ment benefit for Iran is the lifting of military sanc-tions, so that in a few years they will able to devel-op a legal rocket program. This will allow Iran to add to their arsenal several long range missiles (ICBM) that can reach the United States and Eu-rope. Note that without a nuclear bomb the rockets are worthless. Most people in the United States don’t want a war, therefore many believe that it could be prevented by an agreement with Iran. The White House is sat-isfied with that premise. In 1938, England’s Prime Minister Chamberlain had the same idea, so he signed an agreement with Hitler and called it “peace of our time”, but we know the rest of the story. To-day, like in the 1930’s, our military is less prepared than previously and our enemies recognizes it. Find-ing a way to avoid war using the 15 year agreement is clearly temporary. Germany and Iran are differ-ent in their ambitious expansion. Iran’s government runs on a Muslim theology with the Ayatollah having the last word. Justification for expanding their type of Islam and for destruction of the Jews is based on divinity according to their religious leaders whom no one can challenge in Iran. A future nuclear war will be unmistakably more devastating and demoralizing than a conventional war. Finding a way to make sure Iran never gets the bomb, as our government has been saying all along, might have a simpler solution. Provide Israel

with the means to take out all Iran’s nuclear facili-ties with our logistic help. No troops on the ground will be necessary from any nation and this does not have to be a full scale war. Certainly Israel has the justifications to take out Iran’s nuclear facilities. Is-rael has been threatened over and over again with annihilation which is, in the first place, a violation of the U.N. charter. Once you eliminate the threat of a nuclear war the following benefits will occur:

Iran will not be able to blackmail anyone with the threat of an atomic bomb.

Our Children and grandchildren will most likely not inherit a future nuclear war.

Iran’s neighbors will respect us and will form a closer relationship with us.

Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, Arab Emir-ates and others will have no need to develop a bomb; hence eliminating nuclear proliferation in the Middle East.

It will remove the existentialist threat from Isra-el, while it still has to deal with terrorism from Ha-mas, Hezbollah and Islamic Jihad. Israel prefers that choice.

All sanctions will be lifted from Iran without an opaque dubious agreement that is hard to reasona-bly implement. Worldwide trade will resume benefit-ting Europe, China and Russia.

Iran will not be able to rebuild their nuclear fa-cilities for the very long future and certainly not be achieving their goal of 100+ bombs. On a personal note I will be able to sleep better at night The negatives will include Israel’s world condemna-tion (Déjà vu) and it will be punished with multiple rocket strikes from Hezbollah, Hamas and others. When is the world not upset with Israel? Or ob-sessed? Iran will continue to spread terrorism in the region, not necessarily on a higher level, because they have already got a very clear message. Iran, who doesn’t produce much, is dependent on oil rev-enues. Oil is at the lowest, adjusted for inflation, price in 3 decades and we are not so dependent on oil ourselves. Today we are the largest producer of gas/oil in the world unlike 30 years ago when we were very dependent on Middle East oil. So why are we afraid of Iran? Fix the problem now rather than have our chil-dren and grandchildren do it
