2018 CLEMENT S. STACY MEMORIAL UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH
CONFERENCE
Purdue University Northwest April 20-21, 2018
COLLEGE OF HUMANITIES, EDUCATION, AND SOCIAL
SCIENCES
Welcome to the 2018 Clement S. Stacy
Undergraduate Research Conference! Good Morning! I am Elaine Carey, Dean of the College of Humanities, Education, and
Social Sciences of Purdue University Northwest and am pleased to welcome you to the
26th anniversary edition of the Clement S. Stacy Undergraduate Research Conference.
Today we are thrilled to host over 70 students from Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, New
York, and Wisconsin.
The goal of research is the advancement of knowledge and understanding of our
world. This is the case whether the field is physics, medicine, economics, engineering –
or (as it is here today) psychology, literature, sociology, philosophy, or another field in
the liberal arts or social sciences. We in academics engage in research because we strive
to learn, to attain new knowledge. What we learn we then convey to others via
scholarly journals, books, and research conferences such as the one in which you are
participating today.
So I am extremely pleased that you as student presenters are engaged in research and
that you are here disseminating your findings and conclusions. Others of you are here
as teachers, mentors, friends or family members of these students, and your
contributions and support are extremely valuable and very much appreciated.
I would like to give a special thanks to our Graduate Assistant Sonja Dimovski, for her
work in coordinating the conference, our Web & Events Coordinator Rachel Pollack, for
her supervision, as well as CHESS Administrative Assistant Liz Rodriguez and
Graduate Assistant Kirsten Markusic for their assistance with the conference. I would
also like to acknowledge our faculty review committee: Dr. Bethany Lee, Dr. Christina
Ragan, Dr. Mary Beth Connolly, Dr. Yu Ouyang and Dr. Kelly Vaughn. The nature
and extent of their efforts are not always obvious, but this event does not take place
without their attention to literally hundreds of details. And, last but certainly not least,
I wish to thank Purdue Northwest and visiting faculty who have mentored these
scholars and faculty and graduate students who are serving as session chairs.
Congratulations and good luck to all of the students who are with us today. We
encourage you to actively participate in this celebration of undergraduate research by
asking questions, challenging assumptions, sharing thoughts, and congratulating the
student presenters.
