This year, we also started the year with the new weighted assessment approach to focus more on learning and nurturing the dispositions for learning and citizen-ship. Curriculum and co-curriculum are deliberately designed to develop positive dispositions and attitude to learning. Teachers are committed to Learn-for-Life as we believe that this will improve teaching and learning.

Our strategic partnerships with our alumni and parents have continued to make learning meaningful and engaging for our students, especially in the Education and Career Guidance Programme. Their presence at our school events like TK Road Run, Total Defence Day, Prize Presentation Day, Parent Meetings, Interna-tional Friendship Day, Education and Career Fair and Talk also adds to the strengthening of our TK social fabric.

As a benchmark school, we have received a number of requests and visits from local and overseas institutions to learn from our good practices. TK will continue to grow from strength to strength as we continue to enhance our delivery of the curriculum and co-curriculum, as well as maintain our provision of care for our students and teachers.

I would like to thank all our dedicated staff, our supportive stakeholders - alumni, parents and institutions of higher learning, for making all this possible for our students. As you turn the pages of this issue, I am certain you will feel the exuberance and spirit of our TKsians as they learn and strive for excellence.

The TK Band participated in the biennial Singapore Youth Festival Arts Presentation for Band (Concert) on 8th April 2019. Conducted by their resident conductor, Mr Jovan Neo, the band put up an enthralling perfomance. Their choice piece for this year's SYF was Perseus: A Hero's Quest in the Heavens by Satoshi Yagaisawa. The students dedicated their hearts and souls into perfecting both the choice piece and the set piece - Festival on Earth by Lee Jin Jun. The band performed the pieces superbly and clinched the Certificate of Distinction at the SYF!

The TK Choir, led by their conductor, Mr Foong Hak Luen, presented three songs for the biennial Singapore Youth Festival Arts Presentation 2019. The three songs were What is that I hear, followed by Lay A Garland and Christi Mutter.

Their SYF journey was fraught with many challenges such as time constraints and slow progression. However, they persevered, gave one another moral support and learnt to be flexible in the face of changes while maintaining a positive and indomitable spirit. With hard work, the TK Choir mesmerised the audience with their melodious and clinched a Certificate of Distinction at the SYF!

After hours of gruelling training under the observant eye of their dedicated coach, Mr Goh, TK Choir managed to clinch a Certificate of Accomplishment in this year’s biennial Singapore Youth Festival Arts Presentation for International Dance. The dance was a fast, energetic number which stretched the dancers’ limits. Over the months, what started off as a challenging item grew on them; the steps eventually becoming second nature. The dance depicted workers in a modern city who were subjected to the relentless pressures of the daily office grind but eventually appreciated the beauty of working in synchrony. Through the months, fond memories and close friendships were formed.

“All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players.” TK Drama Club students were more than just mere actors. They certainly rose to the occasion when they performed the play entitled ‘You Can Sit With Me’ at the biennial Singapore Youth Festival Arts Presentation 2019 for English Drama on 26th April 2019 at School of the Arts (SOTA) to not just act but to educate and help spread an important message.

The play centred on the theme of bullying and was certainly aimed at creating awareness of the reality of this pressing issue amongst teenagers in school. Thus, it came as no surprise when the club was awarded a Certificate of Distinction for its meaningful presentation which received a thunderous applause from the audience.

On 29th March, our Secondary Three NPCC cadets partnered with the Singa-pore Police Force to spread awareness of crime prevention and the SG Secure movement, as part of their Police Youth Ambassador project. During the Sports Safety 2019 exhibition held at the OCBC Arena, Singapore Sports Hub, they encouraged passers-by to visit the SPF booth and even got the rare chance to interact with the Minister of Culture, Community and Youth, Ms Grace Fu.

On 24th May, TK NPCC celebrated NPCC Day. After morning assembly, the newly minted Secondary Three Chief Trainers recited the annual NPCC Day message. They also proudly presented the UOPA (Unit Overall Proficiency Award) Gold Award for 2018 to our Vice-Principal, Mr Koh Tong Seah.

The Gold Award was achieved through the cadets’ hard work and persever-ance, and a large contributing factor was their memorable achievement of 6th Placing for the Boys’ Team and Champions for the Girls’ Team during the island-wide 2018 NPCC Campcraft Competition.

Later that day, TK NPCC also played host to officers and cadets from the Royal Brunei Police Cadet Corps. It was an afternoon of meaningful exchanges between the cadets from both countries.

NCC (LAND) Unit Recognition Award

In 2018, the National Cadet Corps (NCC) introduced the Unit Recognition (UR) award, which replaced the previous Best Unit Competition award. The NCC UR award is designed for all NCC Units in the Land, Air and Sea districts and is an assessment of the overall performance of the Unit in a work year. Particularly, the aims of the NCC UR are to recognise a cadet’s development of specific knowledge, skills, competencies, and character. In addition, it also serves to promote comradeship and teamwork, and further instil a sense of pride and achievement amongst our cadets. TK NCC (Land) is proud to share that our Unit clinched the Distinction award for 2018, the highest band in the UR recog-nition criteria.

Our cadets brought back with them multiple achievements, amongst which was the championship title in the Precision Drill Squad (PDS) competition (East District). This comes with it, the qualification for the Grand Finals. In addition, our PDS performance probably left a lasting impression in the hearts of many, leading to them being selected for a further performance at the RSAF 50 Air Show at Sembawang on 1st April 2019. Our junior cadets also did the school proud, as they clinched 3rd place in the Nationals for the Orienteering Competi-tion held in October 2018.

Our cadets have worked really hard and they truly deserve this recognition. We believe that they will continue to work hard and stay true to the NCC motto – to serve with pride and dedication, both to the school and to their country.

“The soldier is the Army. No army is better than its soldiers. The Soldier is also a citizen. In fact, the highest obligation and privilege of citizenship is that of bearing arms for one’s country” – George S. Patton Jr.

The TKSS NCC Land cadets participated in the annual Precision Drill Squad (PDS) and Freestyle Drill Squad (FSD) competitions (East District) held at Anglican High Secondary School on 2nd March 2019, and they emerged as 1st runner-up and 3rd runner-up respectively. These titles did not come easily for them, as they practised tirelessly during the school holidays and had to manage both their studies and training when school resumed in 2019.

The teachers are extremely proud of them as their hard work eventually paid off. In addition, both PDS and FSD teams have qualified for the National Finals. It is indeed remarkable and an achievement to all the NCC Land cadets who have taken part in the competitions.

Both the Precision Drill Squad and Free Style Drill teams made it to the finals and our Precision Drill Squad was invited to perform for newly-minted recruits at the Sea Affirmation Ceremony 2019.

Our cadets have put in a lot of commitment and hard work and they are thrilled to be able to do the school proud. We believe that they will continue to work hard and stay true to the NCC motto – to serve with pride and dedication, both to the school and to their country.

TK NCC (Sea) emerged as 1st runner-up. This was a noteworthy effort as the cadets practised tirelessly for the competi-tion throughout the December school holidays and had to balance their studies and training during the 2019 school term. The PDS team also had the honor of performing for all new Secondary 1 recruits at Changi Naval Base during the Sea Affirmation Ceremony. The annual Singapore Canoe Marathon (SCM) is organised by the Singapore Canoe Federation.

Competing in distances between 6km and 30km, participants paddled against the backdrop of iconic landmarks such as the Singapore Flyer and Marina Barrage. The purpose of the SCM is to expose athletes to different race formats apart from the traditional Canoe Spirit events of 1000m, 500m, and 200m. The SCM is a much more tactical race and it gives participants the ability to showcase their tactical prowess as well as their endurance. The SCM also hopes to inspire a new generation of young paddlers to work hard to reach the highest level.

The TK Seladang Scouts sent two teams to participate in the three-men relay race. Both teams managed to win prizes; our teams won the 2nd and 4th position for the UG race category.

The team that won the 2nd position consists of Foo Juinn Kai (4B), Lim Jing Ee, Ronan Lawther (4B) and Loh Yu Xuan Karel (4G).

The team that won the 4th position is made up of Liu Tse Han (3C), Tan Yirong Isaac (3C) and Lim Zheng Wei (3F).

B Division Floorball

Mr Ngasti, the Coach of TK Floorball has always told TK’s floorballers that while it is easy to win the title, it is far more difficult to maintain it. Since the girls emerged as National B Division Floorball Champions last year, they were just as determined to hold on to the title this year too.

Each training, the girls seized every opportunity to keep improving together as a team and honing their skills. They sharpened their passes and strengthened their defence strategies. They also prepared for all eventualities, includ-ing practising their penalty shots.

The final of the tournament was held on 9 April, Tuesday, at Our Tampines Hub. TK was neck and neck with Meridi-an Secondary School, with the game ending in a 3-3 stalemate. All hearts were beating furiously as the teams got ready for penalties. Both teams missed the first two shots but TK scored the third and last shot to secure the title for the second year running!

All the blood, sweat and tears that the floorballers had put in over the past year had definitely paid off. With their perseverance and ‘Never say die’ attitude in defending the title, they managed to emerge triumphant once again, despite having to play against many skilful and challenging opponents throughout the season.

B Division Netball

The TK Netball Team finished third in this year’s B Division East-Zone Netball Championships, despite Captain Humaira bte Mohd Isa being sidelined midway through the season with an ACL injury. The Secondary Three players rose to the occasion and it seemed we might have had the opportunity for a chance to be Zonal Champions, but TK fell to Tanjong Katong Girls’ School at the semi-final round. Regardless, the girls finished the season with a convincing 33-23 win over Dunman Secondary School, clinching third place.

In the Nationals Netball Championships, TK faced much tougher competition, but the girls slowly became known as “giant killers” as we emerged victorious over the West, South and North Zone champions. However, TK was once again defeated at the semi-final stage and had to fight for third place against last year’s Nationals runner-up, Singapore Sports School.

TK was trailing for most of the game, and was four goals down going into the last quarter. However, the girls fought till the final whistle, and put in the last shot to tie the game, forcing the game to go into extra time. Once again, the girls showed their mettle and dug deep, somehow managing to pull off three consecutive turnovers to turn a two-point deficit in the dying moments into a one-goal win.

Indeed, TK’s ‘B’ Division Netball team has had a journey to remember in 2019.

Determined to build on last year’s League 2 Championship triumph, the ‘B’ Division footballers kicked off this year’s ‘B’ Division National Inter-school Football Tourna-ment in January with fire in their bellies. The team notched up seven convincing wins out of the opening eight games, playing fluent attacking football along the way. In so doing, they qualified for League 1, the top-tier competition in local school football.

Despite their best efforts, the B Division footballers’ journey ended at the Round of 16. Nonetheless, the team cemented the school’s status as one of the top football schools in the nation.

The ‘C’ Division National Inter-school Football Tournament began in earnest in early February. Like their seniors, the C Division footballers have performed well. Playing with skill and poise, the boys made up for their lack of physical size with their teamwork and technical ability. They won five of their first seven games to qualify for League 1 as well, earning the chance to test their mettle against Singapore’s top school teams.

The tournament will kick off in July and there is no doubt that the boys will do their best to go as far as they can and do the school proud once again.

The Secondary One Orientation was filled with fun and meaningful activities to welcome the new Secondary One students to the TK family. The programme was aimed at helping the new TKsians forge friendships with their peers as well as familiarising themselves with the school culture, new learning environment and routines to cultivate positive learning dispositions.

Some highlights of the programme included a sharing session by the TK Alumni on the school culture, a talk on the transition from primary to secondary school and a study skills session. These sessions were conducted to ensure that the Secondary One students would be well equipped with the knowledge and skills to help them ease the transition to secondary school life. The Peer Support Leaders (PSL) also organised ice-breaker sessions with the junior students and shared their experiences and strategies on managing the changes and adjust-ments in their new school.

Meaningful interactions were observed in the various class games and bonding activities as the students enjoyed themselves, getting to know one another better while building camaraderie as a class. The orientation programme culminated in the Secondary One Investiture on 12 January, where the Secondary One students took part in the symbolic badge pinning ceremony and were formally inducted into the TK family.

On 8 March, TK celebrated our 63rd Prize Presentation Ceremony. It was a memorable and momentous affair, and School Advisory Committee (SAC) member Mr Wong Khai Theen, graced the occasion as the Guest-of-Honour. As various awards celebrating the myriad achievements of TK students were presented – ranging from Academic Awards, to Principal’s Honours List to TK Outstanding Service Awards – one could feel a strong sense of pride radiating from the recipients, while their school-mates, teachers and parents enthusiastically cheered their achievements.

The notable contributions of our parents and other stakeholders were also recognised as awards were given to outgoing members of the Parent Support Group (PSG) as well as to those who helped to enrich the learning experiences of students and staff in TK. Our Guest-of-Honour, Mr Wong Khai Theen, also received the Service to Education Award from the Ministry of Education, in recognition of his dedication and contributions to the education service over the years.

The highlight of the event was the presentation of the prestigious N. Vaithinathan Gold Medal Award. This pinnacle award is presented to a TK graduate who excels in academic performance as well as demonstrates the exemplary qualities of a student leader. This year, the prize went to Bryan Ng Wen Hann (4D, 2018). Closing the ceremony on a high note, the TK Choir performed two delightfully melodious songs: ‘You Are The New Day’ and ‘Rosas Pandan’.

This year, the TK Road Run made a return to the Physical Education (PE) Department's calendar. Against the backdrop of Marina Bay East and Gardens by the Bay, students turned up in full force on a cloudy afternoon on 5th April 2019.

The competitors ran their best to complete the distance and returned swiftly to the finish point, receiving a thunderous applause from their classmates as they completed their race. Although the afternoon showers delayed the mass run, the atmosphere was still abuzz with excitement as individual medals were presented to the Top 15 runners from each level. Cheers were aplenty for our staff and parents who also joined in the road run and completed the distance with the students.

The rain might have dampened the ground but it certainly did not dampen the TK Spirit which was evident and robust as students, teach-ers, parents and school leaders sang the school song with pride, ending the event on a high!

TK held our Chinese New Year celebrations on 4th February 2019.

Prior to the celebration, TK staff and students prepared CNY hampers for the senior citizens in the Kampong Arang area. This was TK’s signature way of showing our care and concern for the senior citizens during the festive season. The day of celebration began with an annual Mass Lo Hei event in the assem-bly plaza, where students, teachers, parents, and guests indulged in the auspicious and joyous tossing of yusheng. School Advisory Committee and Parents Support Group members, as well as senior citizens from the St Hilda’s Community Services joined in the festivities with much cheer. After the Mass Lo Hei, the Chinese New Year Concert segment commenced with jubilant performances by TK Band, EMAS students, Gu Zheng perform-ers, and even a song item courtesy of the Choir. To enhance the celebration further, the story of the twelve Chinese Zodiac signs was shared with the student body. The entire concert was tied together by a unique and quirky skit based on the famous legend of “Journey to the West”. On 14th February 2019, TK co-hosted a Chinese New Year Lunch at the Grand Mercure Hotel, in partnership with St Hilda’s Community Services for the elderly residents. This is an extension of our community involvement with our community partner. This year, we were honoured to have Emeritus Senior Minister, Mr Goh, Chok Tong, as our Guest of Honour. Our students were the emcees for the event, and the Malay EMAS students put on a special Dikir Barat performance to add a hint of local flavour to the event.

On 14th March 2019, the school organised the annual Education Fair and Seminar for our graduating TKsians and their parents. This year, we had 14 Institutions of Higher Learning from the various polytechnics, junior colleges and universities represented at the fair. Students from our E5 Cluster schools were also invited for the event. The ECG Exhibition provided our Secondary Four students with the opportunity to find out more about post-secondary education, scholarships and possible career and education paths, helping them to make more informed decisions as they chart their journey of learning beyond TK. Through the sharing sessions and talks, they also learnt more about the unique experiences and special-ised programmes offered by these tertiary institutions.

The Career Dialogue Session took place on 3rd May 2019 with 33 invited speakers that comprised parents, alumni and industrial partners from more than 15 industries. The learning experiences provided our upper secondary students the opportunity to find out more about the scope and demands of the different professions as well as the educa-tional qualifications, 21st century competencies and requisite character traits and attitudes to thrive and be successful in the future workforce.

The students found the talks given by the speakers informative, insight-ful and inspiring as presenters shared relevant information, personal stories as well as the challenges that they faced in their professions. Students were inspired to read up more on their careers of interest and some shared that the sharing sessions had inspired them to work purposefully towards possible education and career pursuits.

On 12th April 2019, TK celebrated International Friendship Day. The theme this year was “Connected Communities” which emphasises how globalisation provides us with the opportunity to live together and appreciate friends from different traditions, languages and cultures.

To learn more about and appreciate the rich diversity in our ASEAN neighbours’ cultures, ten classes were shortlisted to put on a showcase during assembly. Each ASEAN country was represented by one class, and the students created artefacts or costumes out of recycled materials to reflect each ASEAN country’s culture or traditions. Students also researched and presented about how various ASEAN countries played their roles in environmental conservation.

Ms Chen, Mr Siao and Ms Rohini were the judges and 4F, 2C and 2A won the top three prizes based on the thoroughness of their research, the aesthetics of their creations, their resourcefulness in using green materials and the clarity of their overall presentation.

The Parent Support Group (PSG) also played a pivotal role in making the day meaningful and engaging for many students. They lined up many exciting activities during recess, and placed mini ASEAN country flags on canteen tables to familiarise students with the various ASEAN countries and cultures. Moreover, students tried various games and craft from various ASEAN cultures like coconut shell walking, making paper fishes to hang them up on a mobile. Students also enjoyed making colourful fabric buttons to stick onto a big “TK Celebrates IFD” banner. Finally, students and staff put on ethnic costumes and took pictures with an Instagram frame using the props provid-ed by the PSG. Students participated enthusiastically and won many attractive prizes sponsored by our parents. Thank you parents, for all your love and support!
