Does familiarity breed contempt?

Today’s Gospel begins as Jesus and His

place. On the Sabbath, Jesus went to the synagogue and He began to teach. All who listened to Jesus were astonished. They were taken aback at the power of His teaching as well as the power of His presence. This was Jesus, a man they knew very well. He was the man who had grown up in their midst. How had Jesus become so knowledgeable and such a powerful speaker? He was the son of a carpenter, not the son of a rabbi. Many people in his hometown discounted

If interested please leave name and phone number in the parish office as soon as possible.

REFLECTION We are a family of faith, A family of love and compassion. When we act with kindness, God’s love shines in us.

God’s love shines in us. When we let others play with us, God’s love shines in us. When we say good things about people, God’s love shines in us. When we stand up for one another, God’s love shines in us. When we are kind to our brothers and sisters, God’s love shines in us. When we help our parents around the house, God’s love shines in us. When we set a good example for our brothers and sisters, God’s love shines in us. When we show respect to our parents and children, God’s love shines in us. When we love, we shine God’s love to others

PIC OF THE WEEK

Last week I met a woman who said: “I am really sorry I don’t seem to be able to pray any more. I have three children under the age of four and my husband and I struggle to make ends meet. We have to work when-ever we can. My mother is sick a lot of the time and whatever time I have left over is spent caring for her. I am really sorry, but God doesn’t get much of a ‘look in’ in my life nowadays.”

Pope Francis says that, for that woman, God is very much getting a ‘look in’ in her life but she does not real-ise it. God is being encountered, met, responded to and loved in every gesture of care and kindness she shows to her family, in every struggling effort she makes to be faithful to her many responsibilities.

Paraphrasing Pope Francis in Gaudete et Exultate, I said: “caring for your family and those you love is the particular path to holiness that God has laid out for you”. Tears of relief came into her eyes as she heard these words. She had felt that somehow doing the right thing by God, on the one hand, and caring for her loved ones, on the other, were in competition, and she couldn’t fulfill her responsibilities to both. It was a tre-mendous relief and source of joy to her to know that this was not the case.

A beautiful sunrise over Lough Derg last week. Fr Ea-monn Conway shared the photo on Twitter, reminding us of God’s loving kindness “that visits us like the dawn from on high.”
