Salt spray was blown two or three miles inland, burned the leaves; many of the bushes look blighted. Some authorities say the bees were not around to pollinate the bushes, and blame the use o f DDT.
A canvass was made of property- owners along the beach at Amagansett, along Napeague Harbor, at Maidstone Park, Three Mile Harbor, Fresh Pond, and other spots which normally yield a good crop for the picking.
People who enjoy making an annual outing o f beachplumming were interviewed. They think it strange to find so few berries after a wet summer; a scarcity is usually blamed on a dry season.
Bright SpotA ll eastern Long Island is report
ed to be in the same situation, as far west as Patchogue (beyond that is practically city, so we did not enquire).
However, the questioning did reveal a bright spot here and there. One homemaker reports that she has put up 50 jars of jelly, after scouring the countryside for the plums. . .
Another bought 20 pounds of the fruit at a roadside stand and went back to the kitchen rejoicing. . . One man picked a pailful from some high bushes after passing dozens of low, blighted ones. . .
A compassionate friend became
interested in the research project and suggested a possible locality. With the result that the reporter returned home on the afternoon of Oct. 2 with two and one-half quarts of beachplums.
It was a beautiful day; the bay was very blue, the w oodbine was very red, and the company was good. Now, the visiting small fry will have at least a taste of beach- plum jelly this winter.
Who ever heard of picking beachplums in October? The few there are, have ripened very late. It is really cranberry season. According to reports, these are fairly plentiful, though smaller than usual.

USCG Expects Sailor Willis
The Coast Guard expects to take William Willis* 75, who set sale for England June 30 from Montauk in an 11%-foot sloop, o ff a Polish trawler tomorrow somewhere east o f Nantucket.
Mr. Willis had made roughly 2,000 miles of the 3,000 mile voyage when he apparently asked to be picked up, with his boat, by the 227-foot vessel Belona last Thursday. The trawler was en route to George’s Bank when Mr. Willis was spotted.
