We Have a New Youth Minister! Many of you know Anthony Janus, our junior high and high school youth minister for the past four years, has moved to Virginia to pursue a degree in counseling and be closer to his and his wife’s families. Anthony has done a phenomenal job during his time here. There were 10 high schoolers his first year and this past year, there were over 40! On the last night of the semester before summer break, the teens were able to say good-bye and thank you. Each and every one of them said how much they will miss Anthony and how much he and the youth group has helped them grow in their faith. If you know me, it is so much more than just about numbers, it really is about each teen’s personal relationship with Jesus Christ and His Church and their desire to learn and grow more in their faith. Not only did Anthony have a solid 40 students every Sunday night, but when he offered the Thursday Bible Study for those who wanted more, he would have about 20 choosing to come to deepen their faith. As you can tell, the new Youth Minister has big shoes to fill, but is coming in with such a strong foundation.
I am pleased to introduce Grace Rivera as our new Youth Minister. Before I talk about Grace, let me share a little about how we came to the decision. I, Steve (Parish Manager), Kathy (Dir. of Evangelization), Anthony, a Core team volunteer, as well as one of our teens, were all on the interview board. I am so thankful for all of them, but in a special way, for Anthony for wanting to interview and meet the person who would take his place because he wanted the best for the teens he is leaving. About a couple weeks after posting the open position, and interviewing a few candidates, there was only one we were going to ask for a second interview, but we still had reservations. Then out of the blue I shockingly got a resume from Grace Rivera. I personally have known Grace and her family for the past nine years. Grace was a Senior in High School when I became a priest and assigned to Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Scottsdale. Suddenly I felt better having a good applicant. To make a long story short, after a first interview with her, and then after a second interview with her and another candidate, we chose Grace. As a side note and a point of reference, Grace’s brother is Noah Minton, one of the seminarians who has been staying here this past summer.
So, I have personally known Grace and her family for many years and have seen how she has grown in her faith. I believe she will do a great job in continuing to form the current teens and attract new teens. Also though, I want to say to her and to all of you, and especially the teens and parents, Grace is not Anthony. They both have certain gifts that the other does not. Thus, it will take some adjustment, but hopefully done with an attitude of openness and a spirit of receptiveness to Grace and what she brings and offers, without comparing her to Anthony. If we keep this in mind, we will all be better off for knowing not only Anthony, but now Grace, too.
Through Him, With Him, In Him,
Fr. Chad King
Hello Corpus Christi Community! I’m so excited to take on the role of Youth Minister and continue to
serve the youth of this parish. I know that saying goodbye to Anthony was bittersweet, but I hope to build onto the strong foundation that he’s formed and help the ministry flourish at a new level! I have already felt so welcomed by this community during my first few weeks here, especially by the amazing parish staff. I’m looking forward to getting to know the families of Corpus Christi and integrating my own into parish life.
I’d like to take this opportunity to briefly introduce myself. My name is Grace Rivera and I was born and raised as a Diocese of Phoenix Catholic. I grew up at Saint Maria Goretti Parish in Scottsdale, where my parents were married and my husband, Daniel and I were married as well, two years ago last May. I think it’s important to mention that I am the young Catholic woman I have become today due to two main influences: my parents and a great high school youth group. My parents took their role as the primary teachers of the faith seriously, and instilled in me, my
Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 11, 2019 5 brother Noah, and my sister Rose, a deep love for Jesus Christ and His Church. By their example, I have been able to establish a home and mission within the Body of Christ.
I also know the importance of growing up in a vibrant church community because of the youth group I went through high school with. My parents suggested I start attending youth group at OLPH in Scottsdale and it was there that I met some of my lifelong friends and grew in my understanding and love for my faith. I remember the feeling of peace, belonging and confidence that I developed while attending Sunday night youth groups, Bible studies and retreats. Those years were very formative for me and along the way, I got to know our dear Fr. Chad King as a newly ordained priest!
After high school, I gave a year of my life as a NET Missionary. NET Ministries train teams of young adults and send them to minister in parishes and schools across the United States to ignite the faith of young Catholics. In my case, God planned to take me a little farther out of my comfort zone and sent me to Australia. Through NET, He taught me how to live out my faith fearlessly, share it with others and cultivate a personal prayer life. I also got to experience my fair share of kangaroos, koalas, and dangerously large spiders…
After returning from NET and starting my most recent job with The Sacred Art Gallery, I started college at Benedictine University at Mesa, studying Fine Art and Theology. It was there that I fell in love with the study of the faith, also falling in love with one Theology major in particular – my now-husband Daniel. He is my best friend. He calls me to be holier every day (newlyweds get it) and although he’s more serious and I’m the silly one, he brings a distinctive joy into my life.
Now I’m here with you, embarking on this new adventure! I’m eager and excited to walk with you (the middle schoolers, high schoolers and young adults of Corpus Christi) on this beautiful, challenging and thrilling journey towards heaven.
Please reach out to me if you see me around the church campus, or if you have any questions about ministry. I am here to serve and walk with you! You can find me in the parish office or email me at [email protected]. In Christ,
Grace Rivera
Our first event was a HUGE success!
What a week it was!
THANK YOU ALL!
Overwhelming support from hundreds of parishioners before, during and after
the event mad it an amazing week. I am so grateful!
We welcomed homeless families throughout the week of July 7th - 14th. The families arrived every evening at 5:30 pm and stayed in the CE classrooms until 5:30 am. Each evening we had a nice dinner together in the Parish Center. After dinner we enjoyed a variety of activities as well as dessert and snacks. There was an average of 15 volunteers present each evening. All the volunteers were very important, but I would like to especially thank Marigelle Malapira, Gloria Asadi, Ruth Tily, Vicki Kaehler, Paty and Ray Enriquez, Matthew Henry and Tanya Gnewuch for being our Overnight Hosts. Our set-up crew and take down team, as well as our lovely laundry ladies, were also essential to this ministry’s success to make the families feel comfortable while they stayed at our parish.
********** We want to make our next event even better! I am compiling notes with participants’
suggestions, ideas, solutions, thoughts, etc. I will have another training meeting soon
in preparation for the October event.

Coffee Break Women’s Bible Study will be meeting to watch and discuss this short video series. Join us as Dr. Brant Pitre takes us through the origins of the Old and New Testaments. Particular focus is given to the history of how the canon, the official list of books in the Bible, came to be, and the central role the Catholic Church played in the formation of the canon. Dr. Pitre also explores the reliability and authorship of the Gospels, and whether or not we can have confidence that the canon of Scripture is reliable. No cost to attend!

Former St. John Bosco Teacher in Need of a Kidney
Michelle Holguin Palomo is a Catholic wife and mom of two on a mission — a mission to find herself a kidney donor! Michelle was diagnosed as End Stage Renal in April 2018 and began dialysis at home each night. Michelle and her family live in Ahwatukee and she taught preschool at St. John Bosco for several years until she needed to concentrate on her health. She is searching for a living donor — someone with Type O blood who is willing to find out how they can help save her life.
If you might be a match and are interested, you can contact her transplant manager at St. Joseph’s Hospital: Celeste Braly at 602-406-8452 and let her know you are calling for “Michelle Holguin.” You can also follow her journey on Facebook at “If You Give Michelle a Kidney.”
Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 11, 2019 7
At the heart of the Bible are the Psalms, prayers from God that help us learn to pray. The Holy Spirit inspired them. Israel sang them. Christ himself prayed them, as did our Blessed Mother. These sacred hymns become our heartfelt response to God’s loving and wondrous deeds for us. Their words captivate the imagination and draw us into a deeply personal encounter with God.
Join Jeff Cavins, Sarah Christmyer, and Dr. Tim Gray as they show you how to establish a deeply personal dialogue with God through the Psalms. Psalms: The School of Prayer will be offered for two different groups: our new Adult Bible Study on Thursday evenings and our Coffee Break Women’s Bible Study on Wednesday mornings. See below for details for each of the groups.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I register? All Catholics living in the Parish area and regularly participating in the liturgy are invited to register in the Parish. Church attendance alone does NOT make you and your family registered members. Registration is required for Baptism, First Communion, First Reconciliation, Confirmation, Marriage and Catholic Education programs.
Adults 18 and over need to be registered separately from their parents in order to get married, have their own children baptized, or be Godparents or Sponsors.
In order to be a Godparent or Sponsor or to receive discounted tuition rates at Catholic Schools, one must be a registered Catholic and active in the parish, which is indicated by use of contribution envelopes or the Online Giving program. Registration forms can be filled out in the Parish Office or via our parish website.
How do I have my child Baptized? Before scheduling the date, please call the Office for a welcoming conversation with the priest. A preparation class is also required for parents prior to the child’s Baptism and are offered once a month.
How do I request a Communion Call or Anointing of the Sick? Please call the Parish Office at 480-893-8770 DO NOT WAIT until someone is near death to have the person anointed! Although Anointing of the Sick was once known as “Last Rites,” waiting until a person is near death could risk that person not being able to receive the Sacrament if he or she should pass away prior to the priest being able to arrive. Anointing of the Sick can only be administered while the person is still alive.
How do I get married in the Church? The Diocese of Phoenix requires a NINE MONTH marriage preparation process. John Deg, Director of Married Life Ministries, will meet with you to explain the process, including when you will meet with the Pastor to set a date. Do NOT set the date prior to this meeting as it cannot be guaranteed until then.

RCIA — The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults
Adult Formation and Training in the Christian Way of Life and the Sacraments of the Church
Have you been searching for God in your life? Perhaps you have wondered if God exists and, if so, if you can be in relationship with him. Yes, you can. God has been pursuing you all your life and desires to draw close to you. In and through Jesus, and through the Catholic Church, you can enter into a lifelong personal relationship with God.
What is the RCIA? The Rite of Christian Initiation is for adults who, after having heard of the saving love of God, freely seek God and desire to live a life of faith in God and conversion as the Holy Spirit opens their hearts. It is a spiritual journey whereby participants become acquainted with the Christian way of life through encountering the teachings and practices of the Catholic Church, along with acquiring a sense in which Jesus Christ saves us from our sins. RCIA involves encountering the Word of God, worshipping together, and serving others, all within the Church community. In a nutshell, RCIA is a time of formation and guidance aimed at training the participants in the Christian life, whereby they receive the sacraments of initiation.
Who is the RCIA for? Formation in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is for: • unbaptized adults who desire to become Catholic • adult Christians baptized in another faith who desire to
become Catholic • adult baptized Catholics who have not received the
sacrament of the Eucharist (Holy Communion) and/or have not been confirmed
• adult baptized Catholics who have completed the sacraments of initiation who desire to learn more about their Catholic faith
• spouses/significant others of any of the above are wel-come
How long is the RCIA process? The process of Christian initiation varies from person to person according to the circumstances that surrounds his or her life. Therefore, the RCIA is suited to each person's spiritual journey.
By means of sacred rites celebrated at successive times, participants are led into the life of faith, worship, and charity belonging to the people of God. The formation process is a personalized spiritual formation program tailored to meet your needs and goals and the Catholic Church's expectations. Each person's circumstances are taken into account and therefore, nothing can be settled ahead of time.
To inquire or get started on this spiritual journey within the Church, please contact Kathy Egle at (480) 893-8770 x234 or [email protected].
