W e continue our journey with the Gospel of Matthew this weekend with the story of the calling of the dis-

ciples. Two years ago, I led a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, and we visited the site where today’s Gospel takes place. On a Holy Land pilgrimage, you always visit Nazareth where Je-sus spent his childhood and much of his adulthood. After his baptism, He relocated to the shores of the Sea of Galilee. When you visit the seashore, it is thrilling to recognize that you are looking at the physical places where the Gospel events took place.

The story seems so random and so ordinary. Jesus is wan-dering the seashore and calling people when He sees them. When we visit as pilgrims, it is instantly obvious that the sea represents the waters of baptism. The original disciples made their living on that very same sea as commercial fisher-men. Minding their own business, Jesus called them first “to come follow Him.” What did Jesus see in them that He did-n’t see in the others? We don’t know. What we do know is that Jesus chose to call them. God initiates the call.

For me this is very personal. At the age of 35, and after wan-dering away from my Catholic faith off and on for fifteen years, I was ascending an escalator at a subway station in Washington, DC where I lived and worked. In the short dis-tance of that ascent, I suddenly thought, “I need to start go-ing to church.” I went that weekend, and I have never missed a Sunday Mass since then.

Later, I began to understand that Jesus was calling me. His invitation entered my mind, and it became irresistible. Even though four more years would pass before I went to the seminary, I began to be reintegrated with my Catholic faith, and the rest is history. Like the apostles, however, I was called and began to respond before I fully understood what God was asking of me.

Every one of us was called from the moment of our creation and strengthened in that call, beginning with the moment of our baptism. The circumstances are usually ordinary and nondescript. It almost seems as if we could miss the mo-ment. Peter, James, John, and the others didn’t – even though it took them a long time to become the disciples we know about now. So, if you are still coming to an awareness of your call, realize you are in good company, perhaps in the best company! Fr. Gary

OUTREACH TO THE SICK AND HOMEBOUND

P lease help us broaden our service to those who are unable to attend Mass in one of our churches. If you have a relative or

friend who is in a nursing home or who is homebound — and who would like to be visited on a regular basis — please let us know. Because of the HIP A law, facilities cannot inform us of our parish-ioners’ admission to hospitals or nursing facilities; we must be invit-ed by the patient or the patient’s family to begin visiting people, either to take Communion or to chat. We currently have volunteers who go to Kindred Hospital, Highlands Nursing Home, Nazareth Home, and Nazareth Home, Clifton. This outreach is a way for our parishioners to keep connected and feel remembered.

What Teens Want You to Know (But Won’t Tell You)

Parents are invited to a special presentation by Roy Petitfils, who will unpack the growing epidemic of teen mental health issues and share practical tips on what parents can do to help our youth. This

presentation will be held on Wednesday, January 29, 2020, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Saint Xavier High School (1609 Poplar Level Road, Lou-isville). Roy Petitfils is a Catholic author, speaker, and psychothera-pist in private practice who has more than 25 years of experience ministering to youth and young adults in parishes, dioceses, and schools. Articles, testimonies, and re-sources are shared via the system as well to try and give as much support as possible for those in need. We know that many people struggle with fertility issues . . . Anyone who has lost a loved one through substance use knows that society treats this loss differently than a death from any other cause.

Sometimes people believe that the one who died must have somehow been a bad person. And for those of us left behind, that we too must have somehow been a bad person; otherwise, they wouldn’t have died. But we are not bad people. The one we lost was not a bad person. There is no blame here. For him/her or for you. This person struggled with this disease but, ulti-mately, this disease took his/her life. And however you tried to help your loved one, you did your best. Because that’s what love does.
