PAINTINGS OF THE MONTH October 2019

Seattle Co-Arts’ Objectives

1 To further community interest in the visual arts 2 To encourage members to greater creativity and self ` improvement 3 To facilitate presentation of members’ work to the public 4 To offer educational opportunities to members through demonstrations, lectures and workshops by well known authorities in the arts community 5 To cooperate with other groups in furtherance of art

I am an experimental process painter. I love to find new and unusual ways to make my paintings unique. Although I start with a concept, I allow the process to unfold. Being in an open creative state allows for inspiration.

My work is done in series, which means I will rotate multiple canvases through the stages from beginning to end. This allows for implementation of ideas and methods to come together in a cohesive body of work.

I am a founding member of the Edmonds Art Studio Tour, Art Walk Edmonds, and Artist Connect. I started out with Lynn Hanson at our gallery in Pioneer Square, and partnered with Denise Cole to start ARTspot. I am currently working with Mary Olsen in the creation of Graphite, a multi-use art facility to open in the near future. I am currently represented by Lynn Hansen Gallery and the Cole Gallery.

I look forward to coming to present to your group this month! I will be bringing a demo showing an encaustic work in progress and how adding resin to it can create interesting effects. “

Dear fellow Members,

The holiday season is upon us and we have been inundated since before Halloween with ads, jingles etc. to where I feel pressured to be happy, jolly and ready for it all.So instead of “Bah, Humbug “ let me say what I am thankful for. Fairly good health, great family and friends and all of you who make my creative life richer. I am humbled and amazed at all the work volunteers do in this organization, and hope I can live up to their standards!

Thanks to Judith Heim our Juried Show is organized and just waiting for all of you to participate .Please see an important notice about it on page 8 of the NewsletterOur Non-Juried Show happened so fast it was hard to keep up! Kudos to Lynn Kerr for organizing this and to all those who volunteered to take paintings for hanging at Evergreen Hospital.

We have a super “Local Workshop” scheduled for December 2 & 3 with Cathe Gill as instructor. Thanks to Delorse Lovelady for putting this together and working out logistics with Beau at the Masonic Hall!!

At the November Meeting Eve Ingraham will be signing members up for our Spring Workshop on Samish Island. Sandra Kahler will be the instructor, and I expect this to be very popular!

There will be no Newsletter or General Meeting in December.

Please take some time from the hustle and bustle of the Holidays to relax, create and be thankful for all we have.

Mitchell Albala is a well known semi-abstract painter, local art instructor, and author of “Landscape Painting: Essential Concepts & Techniques for Plein Air and Studio Practice.” The focus of his presentation had to do with composition, which he illustrated with a slide show of graphics and many favorite artists’ works. It was so helpful to see him point out the design principles as we viewed the slides.

Topics included in his remarks were the importance of including in your design the following: Variations: asymmetry, scale differences. Intervals: major vs. minor shapes, activation of negative space and Movement and Eye Paths: overall movement is more important than a single focal point. Albala spoke of his approach in making sure that all design elements hang together so that no part of the painting feels separate.

The second part of his presentation focused on a partially completed work of his own in which he shared his design approach to his painting of a hilltop structure in Italy called Civita di Bagnoregio. He began his process with a series of notans, [ dark and light studies ] followed by color studies. He paints his entire canvas gold before he starts so that the under layer is activated.

Three Co-Arts members then volunteered their paintings to Mitch for his critique. They were Helen Drummond, Kathryn Flanagan and Sandra Kahler.

Mr. Albala can be reached at his website or check blog.mitchalbala.com. He teaches at Gage, Pacific NW Art School, and holds many workshops annually as well as being available for mentoring.

For members participating in the Catherine Gill workshop, please be aware that workshop hours will be 9am to 4:30pm on Monday and 9am to 3:30pm on Tuesday. Doors open for you at 8:30am on

Tuesday if you want to come earlier. The demo/lecture will begin at 9:30am sharp on both days, please be on time.

Snacks will be located near the back of the room, and there will not be the usual items that require refrigeration, so be sure to bring your own sandwich. We are closing an hour early on Tuesday so the Masons can have time to reconfigure the room for their dinner meeting. Thanks for your patience and help in making these accommodations work so we have another wonderful workshop!

Payment of balances is due at the November 26 CoArts meeting. You will be receiving a reminder email with amounts listed.

This workshop is full! However, if you are not signed up and are interested, you may contact Delorse Lovelady if you would like to be on the waiting list.

Jacqui has been teaching for over fifteen years and is an adjunct professor of art at Seattle Pacific University. Her workshops focus on supporting students to develop their own personal artistic expression, loosen up, and enjoy the creative process. WORKSHOP: Stretching Towards Abstraction. This challenging, invigorating, and inspiring workshop will encourage you to experiment, loosen up, and experience a variety of ways to express yourself with acrylic paint and mixed media. Seattle Co-Arts 70th Annual Juried Show

“Capture The Moment” Where: ERA Living at University House – Wallingford, Seattle When: February 20, 2020 – June 13, 2020 February 20th Gala reception! (provided by ERA Living)

Theme: “Capture the Moment” How do you see the artist’s role? Plato believed in a highly ordered world where beauty was truth and therefore art should strive to document and represent objects, events, and people as they appeared….. nothing more, nothing less. Fast forward several centuries to the impressionists. Cézanne believed that it was the artist’s calling to explore subject matter creatively and give the viewer his/her personal interpretation of it. This gave way to abstract impressionism, and many other contemporary styles which honor the philosophical and visionary voice of the artist. In which style do you choose to “Capture the Moment”?

Juror: June Sekiguchi June Sekiguchi was born in Fayetteville, Arkansas and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Studio Art from the University of California at Santa Barbara. She lives in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains near Seattle with a studio practice in sculpture and installation. Sekiguchi is an arts activist and advocate involved in social justice issues, cultural exchange, mental health, and elder communities. She has co-founded and participated in several non-profit artist run spaces in the Seattle area and served on the Issaquah Arts Commission. She is currently an art curator for Era Living, high end retirement communities dedicated to engaging the audiences through its art exhibition program.

Sekiguchi is the recipient of four 4Culture Individual Projects grants and an Artist Trust Gap grant and 2015 Fellowship. Her work has been exhibited regionally including the Bellevue Arts Museum Biennial Exhibition for wood, Bainbridge Island Museum of Art, Sculpture Northwest in Bellingham, Edmonds Community College, Gallery One in Ellensburg, and Vashon Cultural Arts gallery and internationally in Sweden, Morocco and Laos.
