PLAYWRIGHT’S NOTE:I first discovered Mary Shanley by accident whilst researching another project. The picture I found was of a strong middle aged woman, dressed smartly, with a purse and a gun. I was instantly drawn, I had so many questions. Who is this woman? Why is she holding both gun and purse? And why is she posing for a picture in a publication? I soon discovered this woman was Mary Shanley, a decorated career police woman of the NYPD in the 1930s. Pretty soon I found several articles about “Dead Shot Mary” as she was nick-named by the press and began to realize what I had on my hands was a forgotten legend. What we’ve attempted to do with Dead Shot Mary is pick between the headlines and resuscitate a character that should be front and centre stage in the history of remarkable women. What I hope we have created is a real woman not tied to the constraints of what her position “should” be. A woman of remarkable resilience and talent, a woman who just wanted to be judged by her skills and yet was flawed and and full of mistakes. We want to say that that’s ok, we want to admire you for the whole picture, Mary. We love Mary in her high flying hero celebrity but also in her quiet contemplation. We hope you will love her, too.

Mary Shanley was a pioneer for women in law enforcement. She joined the NYPD in 1931 and quickly became a Gotham all-star and tabloid sensation. She made a staggering 1000 career arrests, and became only the 4th woman in history to make Detective 1st Grade. She nearly lost it all, but fought her way back and saved her badge. Here’s to Dead Shot Mary, a trailblazer, a maverick, and a true New York original.
