TRUMAN DOCTRINE & DESEGREGATION OF THE MILITARY

TRUMAN DOCTRINE• Truman announced this doctrine during a speech on March 12,

1947

• Stated that the united states will help all free peoples who were threatened by outside forces or armed minorities

• Primarily targeted at keeping the USSR out of Turkey and Greece

• US gave Greece 400$ million to stop KKE (communist party)

• US gave Turkey 100$ million to stop USSR from taking control of the Dardanelles

• Precursor to the domino theory/containment policy

• Often seen as the start of the Cold War

• Drastic change from isolationism to interventionism

• Solidified US as world power

INTEGRATION OF ARMED FORCES• By the end of WWII the Army is the largest employer of minorities

• Issued as executive order 9981 on July 26, 1948

• Originally Truman tried to pass several racial reform acts through congress, but southern senators threatened to filibuster

• Conformative in nature

• Lots of resistance to desegregation, often times in a violent manner

• Took a significant time to accomplish

• February 2, 1948 Truman tells armed forces to begin making plans to desegregate armed forces.

• July 26, 1948 Truman issues executive order 9987

• 1953- Army announces that it is 95% integrated
