MARKER-BASED
AUGMENTED REALITY
Project Proposal
OVERVIEW
• Project Overview
• Background Information
• Goals, Objectives and Deliverables
• Plan to achieve Objectives
• Project details (Types of Applications)
• Predicted Outcomes
• Projects Impact in the Community
PROJECT OVERVIEW• Marker-Based Augmented Reality
(AR) Applications
• Applications use a camera and a visual marker to display the various objects
• Applications will include interactive 3D models and animations
• Applications will focus on the Education area

PROJECT OVERVIEW
• Some of the applications from Education field are:
Molecular models as a window onto a 3D world
Interactive animation GE power generation
Layer upon layer of information in structural
biology
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
• Augmented reality (AR) is described as an interactive 3D view of a physical, real world environment.
• Elements in this environment are improved by a computer-generated sensory input.
• Graphics and the audio are superimposed to the user view of the surrounding.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
• There are three components of AR one of them is Marker-Based AR ( Other two are head-mounted display and mobile computer for hardware.
• Marker-Based AR has many advantages (in the education field):
• Overcomes the need for expensive resources
• Webcams can be purchased for a reasonable price
• Black and white markers can be inexpensively printed
• Three dimensional nature of the object + direct physical interactivity = much more authentic experience
• Objects can not only be static but also be animated with interaction
GOALS, OBJECTIVES AND DELIVERABLES• Goal/Objective
• Develop Marker-Based AR applications (For the Education area)
• Dynamic and interactive 3D models + animations
• Deliverables
• Interactive 3D models and animation (the main deliverable)
• Project results for the results seminar
• Expo poster and demonstration
• Thesis report on the project
PLAN TO ACHIEVE OBJECTIVES• Project Initiation
• Background research on project
• Project objectives
• Project scope and specification
• Project Planning and Execution
• Plan the platform to be used for AR development
• Develop practice applications
• Develop a design for the AR applications
PLAN TO ACHIEVE OBJECTIVES• Project Planning and Execution
• Implement a static version of Applications (Version 1)
• Implement an animated version of Applications (Version 2)
• Implement the final version of Applications (Version 3)
• Project Testing
• Test the AR applications (testing also occurs throughout the execution stage)
PROJECT GANTT CHART
PROJECT DETAILS (TYPES OF APPLICATIONS• Initial application - to explain the seasons
• 3D animation of sun and earth
• Other applications will involve working with some teachers to work on a "client brief“
Marker
PREDICTED OUTCOMES
• Successful implementation of interactive 3D models and animations which meets the following:
• Applications developed will be in the field of education
• Expression of students’ conceptual and factual understanding will improve in all cases after the development of applications
• Students will understand how multiple elements involved in the earth-sun relationships work together
PROJECT’S IMPACT IN THE COMMUNITY• AR applications will impact students who are
unable to understand various concepts
• Students with the lower scores will improve most
• Students with low understanding of various concepts will increase
• Misrepresentation of factual information will reduced
