WHY ARE ALL IONIC COMPOUNDS
ELECTROLYTES?
OBJECTIVE
Explain why all ionic compounds are electrolytes
• Reference: 170,194 & 452-453
DEFINITIONS
Electrolyte- Compound the conducts an electric current when it is in an aqueous solution or in the molten state
Ionic Compound-compounds composed of cations and anions
Ion- Atom or group of atoms that has a positive or negative charge
EXPLANATION
• Ionic compounds are soluble in water. Because of this, ionic compounds that are water soluble are strong electrolytes
EXAMPLES
•FeF3 : Iron (III) chloride
•BeF2:Beryllium fluoride
