Teak is a dense, coarse grained hardwood that has been used for centuries in boat building and furniture making. Renowned for its high oil content, it makes elegant outdoor furniture that lasts for many years.

During the first 12 months of weathering you may find the grain lifts slightly and small cracks may appear on the end grains. Please rest assured this will not affect the structure of your furniture and will subside over time. If you would like to remove it, simply rub the surface of the wood with some fine grade (180-240 grit) sandpaper (being sure to work in the direction of the timber grain) during the initial weathering.

TreatmentTeak is a strong, stable material that when left outside will simply weather to a beautiful silvery grey. Whether you decide to retain the colour or let it naturally fade, we thought it would be useful to outline the different options. Whatever you choose to do, you can be confident that the high oil content in the teak will ensure it lasts and lasts, even in our English summers!

1. Leave to age

Your Bordeaux Furniture comes untreated so you can leave it to weather to a beautiful silvery grey colour. This will not affect its strength or durability.

2. Exterior Isoguard Treatment

This is the treatment we would strongly recommend. It is a unique product that preserves the natural colour and beauty of the timber, prevents UV discolouration and protects the wood against the elements.

How Does it Work? Isoguard works in an innovative way. Instead of applying a layer on top of your timber, IsoGuard is designed to penetrate the timber surface and bond with each wood fibre at a molecular level. More importantly Isoguard does not like to bond to itself. This advanced technology offers several major benefits. Firstly you only need one application after applying the exterior primer. In fact a further application will not achieve anything at all! Secondly it means that the natural beauty of the timber is preserved as there is no surface build up. Repairs are wonderfully simple as a second treatment will only react with unprotected wood created by any damage or subsequent repair.

What Can it Do?IsoGuard will protect your wood against most accidents, including spillages of water, tea, coffee, wine, fizzy drinks, vinegar, olive oil, milk and lemon juice. After one hour there should be no visible damage on well maintained and treated timber. After 6 hours you will find slight damage from vinegar. After 24 hours you will get slight damage from coffee, vinegar, milk and lemon juice. We recommend that you wipe up spillages as soon as you find them.

Treatment continued

How do you Apply It? Isoguard Exterior Primer and Treatment Oil are very easy to apply, and a little goes a long way.

Isoguard Exterior PrimerNew wood: 1 litre = +/- 15 to 20 m2Restoration: 1 litre = +/-10 m2

ApplicationPrimer: 1. Lightly sand the area and remove all dust

2. Ensure the furniture is completely dry and apply the Isoguard Exterior Primer with a cloth, brush or sponge 3. Thoroughly remove all excess with a clean cloth

Treatment Oil: 1. Apply the Isoguard Oil with a cloth, brush or sponge and leave for 2 minutes 2. Thoroughly remove all excess with a clean cloth 3. After treating don’t forget to soak your oily cloth in water to avoid a fire risk

The treatment will need 24-36hrs curing time before the surface is protected, and it takes 3 weeks for the timber to be fully cured. During this time we would recommend cleaning the surface with a dry cloth (no liquids) in the first week, a damp cloth in the second and then soapy water thereafter.

3. Other Teak Oil & Water Treatments

There are various other Teak & Tung oil and water based treatments on the market which will maintain the colour of your teak. Nearly all these treatments must be re-applied every 2 – 6 months. It should be noted that the use of these oils will not increase the life of the timber; however they will slightly deepen the colour and prevent stains from seeping into the timber grain.

The use of varnish or any type of polyurethane finish or sealers should be avoided as they will not adhere to the naturally oily timber.

General CareHere are a few additional tips to help look after your beautiful teak furniture:

• Teakcontainsnaturaltanninsthatmayleachoutofthetimberduringthefirstfewrainshowers, sotrytoavoidplacing your furniture on a porous surface, such as a flagstone terrace, during the initial weathering process.

• Ifyourteakfurniturerequirescleaning, useanormalhouseholdbristlebrush(nottoohard)andsomewarm, mildly soapy water. Finish by washing the product down with clean water. We do not recommend the use of high pressure hoses, steel wool or steel wire brushes, as any residue left in the grain will rust and discolour the wood.

Neptune’s cushions are made from Duratex 75 which is soft to the touch and gives high protection from everyday wear and tear.

All of our outdoor cushions have removable and washable covers, which have a quick-drying splash-proof coating. This will allow any water based liquids to simply roll from the fabric if tackled quickly. This also means that they can be left outdoors in the rain and will dry very fast.

All fillings are foam or fibre and compliant with UK FR regulations to ensure they are suitable for use in a conservatory.

CareAny spillages on the cushions should be mopped up as quickly as possible with an absorbent cloth. Covers should be washed on a 30°C wash. Please note that after approximately 5-6 washes the splash proof coating may lose some of its effectiveness.

Dark coloured cushions should be stored out of sunlight when not in use to prevent fading.

Neptune Garden Furniture is designed to live outside and as such is manufactured to a very high standard. However, here are some handy tips to help prolong its life even further:

• Storeyourfurnitureinsideduringthewinter.Wecannotguaranteeyourfurnitureisfrostproofsoitwillhelpto protect it from the harsh winter weather. Just make sure you dry it thoroughly first to avoid mould spots.

• Bewaryofusingcoverstoprotectagainstfrostascondensationcanformunderneaththem.

A last bit of advice…All furniture should be lifted and moved rather than dragged to prevent any damage to the product or the area in which you are using them.
