Dharmasoka College, Ambalangoda, ended their tourna- ment matches with a 10 wicket victory over Kingswood College, Kandy, yesterday, to unseat Trinity College who were on the top of the points table in Group ‘B’. While RoyalCollege, Colombo, beat Maliyadeva College, Kurunegala, St. Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa, routed President’s College, in the last matches. Dharmapala College, Pannipitiya, reclaimed the top position, recording an innings win over Lumbini College, Colombo. St. Sebastian’s took the top position from St. Joseph’s in Group ‘C’ and Royal, who were placed third position last week, overtook Ananda and Thurstan to settle at the top in Group ‘A’. There will be a keen contest now for the fourth place in their group. Mahinda (with one match to go) is placed fourth with 72 points, while Wesley, Maliyadeva and St. Anthony’s who are at fifth, sixth and seventh spots have a chance of bettering their positions with each having two or more matches remaining in the tourna- ment. His numerous feats are still remembered by his fans around the world. He is the oldest all rounder in ODI cricket. At the 1996 Wills World Cup, he rose to fame for the manner in which he treated the bowlers. Consequently, he was adjudged the Man of the Tournament. Short in stature but power- fully built, he has many a time demonstrated his capability even in Test cricket with a top score of 340 against India on August 2, 1997, at the Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. Now he has embarked on another career by being a con- testant at the April 8 Parliamentary Polls. Jayasuriya has stated that his entry into politics is an endeavour to empower the poor and the needy. Many top sportspersons such as Roger Federer - the World no. 1 men’s tennis play- er, Serena Williams – the world women’s no. 1 tennis player and the world’s number 1 golfer and highest paid sportsman Tiger Woods have lavishly donated a part of their earnings to alleviate the sufferings of the less privi- leged. They organised exhibi- tion matches to help the vic- tims of the devastating earth- quake which struck Haiti recently. Their (above mentioned three sports personalities) intention is to alleviate the sufferings of the poor and not seek power as politicians do. What is politics? The word politics comes from the Greek word ‘politi- ka’. According to the Cambridge English Dictionary, it is defined as holding a position of power in government. If Jayasuriya is elected… It has been reported that he would be able to balance his cricket with politics. But there arises a number of questions in line with his decision. They are; An elected member of par- liament must do his duty by the people who voted him to the legislature. It’s a tricky sit- uation. How well will he be able to perform both jobs to the satisfaction of the parties concerned? Can he serve the people as a politician and commit him- self fully for cricket, simulta- neously? I am sure he’s headed in a better direction now.
