When did the Civil War occur?

The Civil war started on April 12th 1861, when Confederate troops fired at Fort Sumter.

It finally ended on April 9th 1865 after almost 4 years.

The Union States

Oregon, California, Minnesota, Iowa, Kansas, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine were all part of the Union.

They believed that slavery went against everything their country stood for.

Union Leaders

Leaders of the Union were: Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant, William T. Sherman, And John Brown.

William Tecumseh Sherman

Born in Lancaster, Ohio on February 8, 1820

On July 21, 1861 he commanded hiss first battle of Bull Run, and then suspected of insanity

Promoted to Brigadier General on July 4, 1863

Retires from army in 1884 Dies of Pneumonia in 1891 at the

age of 71

The Confederacy

Many believe that there are two different principles on why southern states seceded which caused the Civil War.

Some believe that the southern states wanted states’ rights, in which they could not follow a national law, while others believe it was the difference in the beliefs of slavery.

Leaders of the Confederacy

The leaders of the Confederacy were:

Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, And Braxton Bragg.

Jefferson Davis

Born in Kentucky on June 3, 1808. Begin service in the army in 1828. Married Sarah Taylor on June 17,

1835. Married Varina Howell on February

26, 1845. He began to serve as the U.S.

Secretary of War in 1853.

The Confederate States

The confederate states were the following: Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia.

The Border States?

The border states were Missouri, Kentucky, Maryland, Delaware, and West Virginia.

Even though these states believed in slavery, they stayed with the Union because they were Anti-secession.

Allies

There were many allies during the civil war, but the biggest was when Britain and France joined with the Confederates.

The 5 Main Events and Battles

Fort Sumter- the first battle of the Civil War, April 12th 1861.

1st battle of Bull Run- July 21st 1861. Battle of Gettysburg- July 1st 1863. 2nd battle of Fort Fisher. Battle of Appomattox Courthouse.

Weapons

I will be going over these 4 different weapons of war:

Napoleon, Saber, Mountain Howitzer, Minie Ball.

Napoleon

Smooth Bore, Muzzle Loading, 12 pounder cannon.

Started using in 1857. Favorite of the Union and the

Confederacy.

Saber

Used throughout all of the Civil War. Made very few casualties. An edged sword that can only be

very dangerous if in the hands of a trained trooper.

Mountain Howitzer

Small and most portable artillery. Used throughout the whole war. 12lb muzzle loading cannon that was

best in mountainous areas.

Minie Ball

Started using in 1848. Lead Rifle Bullet. Revolutionized Warfare. Is a highly precise far traveling

projectile.

Accuracy of Information

According to the book Fort Sumter, Fort Sumter had begun building in 1829, but it says on Wikipedia.com Fort Sumter had begun building in 1827.

This proves that book is much more accurate then the internet.

How did it all end?

April 9th, 1865 – 2 commanders surrendered at the Appomatox Courthouse and their troops went home on parole.

April and May – remaining Confederate troops were captured.

May 10th – Jefferson Davis captured in Georgia.

Reconstruction

The end of the Civil War led to the Reconstruction Period.

Men and women - black and white- had to work on rebuilding America to give it the same unity it had before.
