Governor Averell Harrlman, on behalf of the people of New York state, this week Issued a proclamation from the Governor's Mansion In Albany honoring the 100th anniversary of the founding of Elmira College, the- first college in the United States to grant full academic degrees to women.

To celebrate this milestone in women's education, the college is conducting a three-day program in New York city, to determine a practical and sound curriculum which the college must offer its students to provide adequately trained women for business and Industrial jobs in the future, and as able leaders In the home, community and national affairs.

The governor's edict paying tribute to this pioneer institution read as follows:

"On behalf of the people* of the State of New York, I send cordial greetings-to you on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the founding of Elmira College. We con gratulate you upon the continued success of your college since its establishment in 1855 as the first degree - granting institution for women in the United States.

"You can take extraordinary pride in the program you have maintained and improved through the years in spite of the stress of different economic periods, civil war and world wars, It is a program that has changed with the changing times and has been characterized by vigor, vision and leadership.

"The 17 pioneering young women who entered the first class at Elmira one hundred years ago and the thousands more who followed have played a vital part In building the homes, the communities* the hospitals, the hurches and the schools in many parts of the world. Wherever they have 'gone, these women have brought the cherished traditions of your campus-democratic living, a code of high personal honor, scholarly attainment, hippy and rewarding family life, and friendliness for all peoples.

"It is my hope that in future years you will continue to grow in educational strength and Influence throughout the world."
