Those Serving in April
A House Fit for God’s DwellingGod has blessed our congregation with a new facility in which to worship Him. The new building is beautiful in both form and function and we are thankful for it. As we use this structure for His glory we will maintain it, clean it, and take care not to neglect, abuse, or misuse it.
As a child, one of my earliest recollections of a Bible School lesson included a hand exercise coupled with this rhyme … “Here is the church, here is the steeple, open the doors and see all the people”. Those simple words were spoken as a gentle reminder that God’s kingdom, His house, His church, is a people and not a structure. The apostle Paul reminds us of that same truth in his letter to the Ephesian church.
“Together, we are his house, built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets. And the cornerstone is Christ Jesus himself. We are carefully joined together in him, becoming a holy temple for the Lord. Through him you Gentiles are also being made part of this dwelling where God lives by his Spirit”. —Ephesians 2:20-22 nlt
The church, God’s family, is something precious and holy and sacred to God. God lives in us and among us through the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. God has carefully fitted us into his plan for his church. The apostles and prophets are the foundation to this temple through their teaching. It is crucial that we share this journey “together”! We need each other. The Spirit works among us collectively. We cannot live out this role alone. No wonder Paul will warn about certain attitudes and actions that destroy community and talks about it in terms of “grieving the Holy Spirit of God” (Ephesians 4:30). So let’s commit to work together to truly be a “holy dwelling” for God to live through the Holy Spirit.
Peter reminds us that God’s true temple must not be allowed to crumble or suffer decay due to lack of interest or disrespect by God’s people. We are not lifeless stones. We are God’s living temple. We are still being put together by Jesus, perfectly formed and joined together, and made accept-able to God through his efforts.
“As you come to him, the living Stone — rejected by human beings but chosen by God and precious to him — you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacri-fices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ”. —1 Peter 2:4-5 tniv
Father, form us into your temple. Make us holy. Purify our hearts. Draw us ever closer to your character and compassion. As we offer our individu-al bodies to you as living sacrifices, draw us closer to each other and build us into the people you want us to be. Move among your people and give us a deeper sense of our calling as your family, your community, your church. Give us a greater sense of being a part of your Kingdom work in the world. Fill us and form us through the work of your Holy Spirit that we may be a house fit for Your dwelling.
