A song to the tune of “Jingle Bells” by Deanna Jump

Mr. Grinch,

Mr. Grinch,

You’re so very mean.

Furry face and scowling eyes

The meanest I have seen. Oh!

Mr. Grinch,

Mr. Grinch,

Your heart grew and grew.

Now you are a friend of mine

and I’ll smile back at you!

Mr. Grincha song to the tune of “Jingle Bells”

written by Deanna Jump

Mr. Grinch,

Mr. Grinch,

You’re so very mean.

Furry face and scowling eyes

The meanest I have seen. Oh!

Mr. Grinch,

Mr. Grinch,

Your heart grew and grew.

Now you are a friend of mine

and I’ll smile back at you!

Have the students add the song to their poetry journals and

draw a picture of the Grinch to illustrate it. Have the kids

become word detectives and use highlighters to highlight popcorn

words.

Characters Change- Read the story. Talk about the

characteristics of the Grinch at the beginning of the story. Did he

change? What caused the change? Record the answers on the

Characters can Change sheet.

Text to Self Connections- After reading the story have the

students think about how at the beginning of the story the Grinch was

grumpy. Why do you think he was grumpy? How did he feel at the end

of the story? What made him happy. Have the students think about a

time when they felt grumpy and a time when they felt happy. Talk

about how they can relate their feelings to the story of the Grinch.

Use the response sheet for them to draw and write their responses.

Grinch Math- Read, draw and solve the Grinch math problems.

Use the math manipulatives provided if desired. Many of these problems

involve higher order thinking skills so you might want to do some of them

together as part of your math message. My kids love “stretching their

brains!”

How to Make a Grinch Grin- Use the patterns included

to make a Grinch. Have the children brainstorm ways to

make a Grinch grin. They should write their sentence and

draw their picture inside the Grinch’s mouth. **Note: This idea

originally came from The Mailbox Magazine about 15 years ago. I just

made it a little bit cuter.

Dear Friends,

I hope you like this mini-unit. Please email me

at [email protected] if you have

any questions. The units I sell on Teachers

Pay Teachers are usually 40-60 pages in

length. Which is why this one is called a “mini-

unit”. I hope you enjoy the unit!

Merry Christmas!
