Diagnostic criteria for DID - The presence of two or more distinct identities or personality states (each with its own relatively enduring pattern of perceiving, relating to, and thinking about the environment and self). 

- At least two of these identities or personality states recurrently take control of the person's behavior.

Some Statistics

1 per 10,000 in the population but higher proportions are reported among psychiatric populations between 0.5% and 2%.  

A sharp rise in reported cases may be attributed to greater awareness of the diagnosis and misdiagnosis of DID as schizophrenia or borderline personality disorder.

Treatment

 antidepressants or anti-anxiety medication

 hypnotherapy, and adjunctive therapies such as art or movement therapy.
