Education During the 20th Century

Students were in rooms of 30-40 per classroom

Students who excelled would help teach kids of lower levels

Teachers got an annual pay of around $325

Being a teacher was not a job people respected very much

Kids weren’t separated by grade

AFT

The American Federation of Teachers The first national

teachers’ union in the country

They were progressive because they challenged the way school was being run

Causes

Teachers weren’t considered professionals to others

Teachers weren’t trained too well

Students were growing in numbers because of immigrants

Students who excelled were teaching lower levels

Oral History

Mr. Pruneda grew up not speaking English very well and went to school in America

He doesn’t believe that we should have Bilingual Education because people should learn to adapt to the environment and learn English.

Comparing Then and Now

THEN NOW

30-40 kids per class Teachers were not trained

very well Some of the people teacher

were students themselves. Standards were not set too

high Not a lot of schools existed Different grade levels were

all in one room Didn’t have as much

technology

Classrooms have better student-teacher ratios.

Teachers go through extensive training

We have more schools with better standards

We have levels for students (Grade levels: Elementary, High School)

We use more technology in our classes
