Acid rain!! By Chloe Price, Jade Guiver, Meg Brodie and Maya Carmody!!

description

Power plants cause acid rain by burning coal and emitting sulfur dioxide (mostly as soot) and nitrogen dioxide (mostly as soot and smoke) from high chimneys, many reaching 1,000 feet. It then collects in the atmosphere and falls as either rain, hail or snow.

WHAT WE CAN DO TO REDUCE

ACID RAIN

Buy locally produced products

Let your washing air dry

Only run the dishwasher with a full load

Keep pools covered while not in use

Walk, ride your bike or catch a bus to got to work/school

Ways you can reduce acid rain just by altering your daily routine…

Use alternate fuels for your car eg. ethanol, propane, natural gas…

Avoid using air conditioning or turn it down to a lower air flow. Turn off lights, computers, video games, TV’s , and other electrical equipment while not in use

Take the train or bus if going on long trips

How Power plants contribute to acid rain.Power plants cause acid

rain by burning coal and emitting sulfur dioxide (mostly as soot) and nitrogen dioxide (mostly as soot and smoke) from high chimneys, many reaching 1,000 feet.

What are power plants doing to reduce acid rain?

There are a few things power plants can do to reduce the amount of sulfur dioxide emissions:

1. Install giant scrubbers to wash away the sulfur before it becomes airborne

2. Burn higher priced low-sulfur coal

3. Or burn oil which contains less sulfur

The Future of Nitrogen Dioxide….Air quality regulations will soon require reduction in nitrogen dioxide emissions.

Current technology can remove up to 90% nitrogen dioxide but the process is expensive so the power plants don’t use it.

Research shows that sulfur dioxide scrubbers can be modified to remove nitrogen dioxide as well.

What is the automotive industry doing to reduce acid

rain•The automotive industry has brought out alternative fuels, such as ethanol, propane or natural gas. •They suggest that In the winter you warm your car's engine with a block heater for two to three hours prior to driving, rather than plugging in the battery overnight. •They also suggest that you Reduce the number of trips you make in your car. •Also Have your engine tuned at least once every six months.

In 1985 the governments of Canada made a move to start reducing sulphur dioxide, which is a major component to Acid rain. They begun a program to cut emissions in Canada in half by 1994. By 1994, the sulphur dioxide emissions in eastern Canada were 54% (more than half) lower than in 1980.

China…China has taken several steps to control acid

rain. A large sulfur dioxide control zone has been made that covers the Southwest, Central, and Northwestern settlements. The plan had targets specifically aimed at Acid rain. The amount of sulfur dioxide discharged was reduced by 20 percent in 2005 in the areas where the zone was in place.
