• The aim of my project was to test the effects of caffeine on the heart rate of twenty college students
Project Overview
• Twenty University of Scranton college students- 10 males; 4 who drink caffeine, 4 who do not, and 2 controls- 10 females; 4 who drink caffeine, 4 who do not, & 2 controls
• A watch, notebook, and pen to keep track of results
What I Used For My Project
• I recorded the heart rate of students by checking their pulse at the wrist for 15 seconds, then multiplying the number by 4.
• Then I wrote the results in my notebook and converted the information onto a table.
How I Carried Out My Project
Test Males w/ Caffeine
Males w/o Caffeine
Control Group
Heart rate in beats per minute (BPM)
84 BPM 71 BPM 69
Heart rate in BPM
88 BPM 91 BPM ~~~~~
Test Females w/ Caffeine
Females w/o Caffeine
Control Group
Heart rate in beats per minute (BPM)
87 BPM 76 BPM 72 BPM
Heart rate in BPM
93 BPM 82 BPM ~~~~~
Results
• After carefully collecting and analyzing the data, I’ve concluded that caffeine consumption does increase heart rate.
• When dealing with students who regularly consume caffeine, more stress was placed on the hearts of the female subjects (table 2, column 2)
• When dealing with students who do not consume caffeine, more stress was placed on the hearts of male students (table 1, column 3)
