A succession of style trends led by Christian Dior and Cristóbal Balenciaga defined the changing silhouette of women's clothes through the 1950s

A flood of synthetic fabrics and easy-care processes. "Drip-dry" nylon, orlonn, dacron, crylic, polyester, triacetate, and spandex were all introduced in the 1950s.

A tailored, feminine look with accessories of gloves and pearls. Tailored suits, fitted jackets worn with a long, narrow pencil skirts. Day dresses had fitted bodices and full skirts. Shirtdresses & halter-top sundresses. Skirts were narrow or very full, poodle skirts were a brief fad. Evening gowns were often the same length as day dresses with full, frothy skirts. Short shrugs and bolero jackets, often made to match low-cut dresses, were worn.

Teens and college co-eds adopted skirts and sweaters as a virtual uniform, as well they continued to wear blue jeans with shirts and pullovers.

This was also a time people felt confident enough to have children and an explosion in the population occurred. The time of great affluence after the depression years and the World Wars consumerism took off in a big way which in turn created jobs and wealth and a circle of growth. As the radio had done in the 20's providing the masses with news and entertainment so the TV did in the fifties originally broadcasting in black and white but later in color
