Defence firms showcasing products at the Thailand Defense & Security 2017 exhibition have taken the opportunity to

showcase a number of new or updated re-mote-controlled weapon stations (RWS), which are aimed at improving the situation-al awareness, firepower, as well as survivability of armoured vehicle crews.

India’s state-owned Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) has unveiled its Remote Con-trolled Weapon Station (RCWS) for Tank which was designed specifically for heavy tracked armoured vehicles as well as main battle tanks (MBTs), armed with a 12.7mm heavy machine gun or 40mm automatic grenade launcher (AGL). Other fea-tures can include a host of optical sensors such as day camera, thermal imager, and laser rangefinder integrated on a single, stabilised housing.

According to an OFB official, the system is capable of automatically tracking air and ground targets and performs the required ballistic computations to

the weapon for improved hitting accuracy.

Singapore’s ST Kinetics show-cased its latest Adder Dual Mount RWS, which can be armed with a 7.62mm or 12.7mm machine gun along with a coaxial 40mm AGL to counter infantry and light vehicle threats. Its eye-safe laser rangefinder can discern targets up to 5,500 metres away, while the 40mm AGL can be upgraded with an op-tional air-bursting munitions kit to engage hostile infantry behind cover.

Turkey’s Aselsan also unveiled a new variant of its Stabilised Advanced Remote weapon Platform (SARP) RWS armed with a 7.62mm M134 minigun. Designated SARP-M134, the weapon station is designed for high rates of fire for infantry sup-

pression as well as unmanned air vehicles with the minigun capable of firing up to 3,000 rounds per minute while the vehicle is on the move.

The Indonesian Ministry of Defence hosted a stand with numerous specialist defence companies who were attending the D&S show looking for

business and partnerships. Shipbuilding was represented by PT

Lundin and DRU Shipyard. A new design from PT Lundin is the Tank Boat, an unusal craft with a tank turret mounted on top of the bridge. This design would feature a Cockerill 105mm main gun together with a RWS 40mm.

It is designed for riverine / brown water/ littoral missions and would have an 18m advanced composite catamaran hull with a shallow draught allowing it to range over water less than one metre deep. It would be a fire support platform featuring four crew and capable of transporting and landing up to 20 infantry. Its speed would be up to 40 knots with a range of 400nm at around 30kts.

PT Lundin representative Ganjar Santosa said that the company was awaitied the design certification by the Indonesian Armed Forces.

DRU Shipyard is focused on building naval vessels for the Indonesian Navy (Tentara Nasional Indonesia-Angkatan Laut, TNI–AL) and has finished one Landing Ship Tank with three more to be completed by the end of 2018. This is a 120m ship with a three metre draught and a maximum speed of 16kts. In addition, the company is also building a Landing Ship Utility which will be slightly smaller and is mainly for personnel and smaller vehicles. This will have a maximum speed of 14 knots. The company also builds fast offshore patrol craft which can run at speeds up to 25kts.

The Indonesian Air Force (Tentara Nasional Indonesia-Angkatan Udara, TNI–AU) is supported by two companies that were on the stand,

PT Nusantara Turbin dan Propulsi (NTP) which specialises in maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) of engines and Infoglobal which is an avionics developer.

NTP vice president sales and marketing Aero Engine Heru Widodo said that its engine services facility has been approved by both the US Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) and the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). It addition to servicing engines of aircraft belonging to the TNI-AL and TNI-AU, it also counts the armed forces of Malaysia and the Philippines among its customers.

Infograbal’s account manager Tomy Dwinanto said that among the products his company supplied to the TNI-AU were digital cockpit avionics and multi-purpose displays

for the General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon and the BAE Systems Hawk.Other companies represented on the Indonesian MoD’s stand included

Garda Persada, which supplies a range of military batteries for vehicles such as the IFV Marder and Indonesian Army (Tentara Nasional Indonesia-Angkatan Darat, TNI–AD) Anoa armoured personnel carrier, the TNI_AU’s Sukhoi Su-30 fighters and C-130 Hercules, as well as submarine batteries for the TNI-AL. Infra RCS is a military radar and electronic support equipment developer and supplier. The TNI-AL already uses the Low Probability of Intercept (LPI) Radar on its frigates and corvettes with five vessels already equipped and two currently undergoing upgrades. Infra’s IRCS ESM V8 has both Omni and Directional antenna combining eight antennas into one box. It is said to offer more sensitivity over a wider range and while development work is completed, it still needs to be certified. Also pending certification is the new Coastal Radar which is land based and its low power consumption means that the company is looking to provide solar power for its operation.

THAI ARMY TAKES TWO MIL MI-17V-5 HELICOPTERS

At Defense & Security Thailand 2017, deputy director of Russia’s Federal Service for Military and Technical Cooperation Mikhail Petukhov announced that Russia had signed a contract in September 2017 to deliver two Mil Mi-17V-5 helicopters to the Royal Thai Army which already operates five of the type.

The Mi-17V-5 helicopter is designed to carry personnel, cargo and equipment. It is also fitted with an external sling that can carry cargo as an underslung load. Its primary task includes tactical air drops, and conduct rescue operations and carry armament to destroy targets on the ground. The helicopter is fitted with a heavily armoured cockpit and a self-defense system against heat-seeking missiles.

Russia and Thailand also signed an inter-governmental agreement in September on military and technical cooperation and Russia’s state arms seller Rosoboronexport has offered the Kamov Ka-52 and Mil Mi-35M rotorcraft for a tender announced by Thailand for the purchase of attack helicopters.

Russia intends to participate in all of Thailand’s tenders for the purchase of military products, including naval hardware.

The Royal Thai Army needs to replace outdated Boeing CH-47 Chinooks that are used as main military transport helicopters and with a limited budget Russia’s helicopters meet its requirements both in capabilities and price.

The Indian Air Force operates more than 150 Mi-17 V5 helicopters, the last of which were delivered in January 2016.

KAWASAKI’S C-2 READIES FOR DUBAI DISPLAY

apan is increasing efforts to promote Kawasaki Heavy Industries’ (KHI’s) C-2 medium transport aircraft to international customers, its Ministry of Defense (MoD) announced last month.

The MoD said in a statement that it is deploying the C-2 on an international tour to display the aircraft to customers in the Middle East and New Zealand for the first time.

According to the MoD, the Japanese Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) will fly the C-2 to the United Arab Emirates to participate in the Dubai Airshow in mid-November, following which it will showcase the aircraft to the Royal New Zealand Air Force.

The KHI C-2 entered JASDF service in March 2016, after 15 years of development under the Next Generation Transport Aircraft (XC-2) programme. The JASDF currently operates four C-2s but it is expected to acquire around 60 aircraft to replace its ageing C-1 and Lockheed Martin C-130H transports.

According to the MoD, the 44 metre long C-2 is capable of transporting up to 36 tonnes of cargo up to a range of 4,500km, although this can be extended with correspondingly lower loads.

HTMS Krabi is a Royal Thai Navy (RTN) offshore patrol vessel (OPV) built by the government-owned Bangkok Dock Company with design and technology transfer (TT) support from BAE Systems. The 2,000 tonne ship was the first of two OPVs in the initial order and was the largest ship to be built

in Thailand within only four years. The RTN has a total requirement for four OPVs of this class. As a result of the collaboration agreement for the type’s manufacture with BAE Systems, Thailand will be able to export OPVs to the region.

BAE Systems Naval Ships International Business Development representative in Asia Pacific, Clive Marchant, is confident that this ground breaking agreement with Thailand will lead to other contracts in the region. Following the ASEAN Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) promoted by Malaysia, members will be considering similar collaborative agreements for their future warship requirements.

The Thai OPVs were designed by BAE Systems which also built the hull while the local Bangkok Dock Company built the superstructure, installed the engines, radars and armament and internal equipment provided by local suppliers.

The Type 31E frigate is the next planned class of frigate for the UK’s Royal Navy (RN) with limited anti-submarine warfare capability intended to enter service in the 2020s, and its modular and flexible design and construction make it ideal for future export opportunities.

BAE Systems is also confident that the more advanced Type 26 Global Combat Ship under development for the RN will also have export potential and has been offered to the Royal Australian Navy for its requirement for nine advanced frigates for the next decade.

Thai shipbuilder Marsun has unveiled a new unmanned surface vessel (USV) concept designed for a wide range of missions, ranging from maritime security and patrol, force protection, to surveillance.

The proposed USV design is based on a lightweight single hull vessel with an overall length of ten metres and a beam of 3.2m. A draft of 0.5m enables it to operate in shallow waters around inland waterways or close to shore.

The USV will be equipped with a 1,000 litre fuel capacility which will provide an operating range of 300 nautical miles (nm), while a high power marine diesel engine will enable the vessel to achieve a maximum speed of 45 knots (kts).

In terms of armaments, Marsun is proposing a 7.62mm or 12.7mm machine gun mounted on a stabilised remote weapon station, although other weapons could be fitted depending on customer requirements. The USV will also be equipped with a host of optical and infrared sensors, as well as collision avoidance and radars.

“The USV will be equipped with a high level of autonomy and will be capable of conducting patrols and surveillance missions with minimal input, although it can be fully controlled by an operator if required,” a company official said. “In the future, it can also be included as part of a manned-unmanned fleet.”

Besides the USV, the company has also developed the Tigershark II Type 3 unmanned aerial vehicle in collaboration with the Royal Thai Air Force which is already in service.

Thailand’s Armed Forces recognise the tactical and strategic importance of unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and several indigenous designs are on display at Defense & Security Thailand 2017.

The Thailand Ministry of Defense’s Defense Technology Institute (DTI) has a primary mission to research and develop large-scale military equipment for the Armed Forces and

national security units paving the way for Thailand’s defense industry on the road to sustainability and self-reliance. UAS technology is one of the key targets included in a seven-year project stared in 2013 resulting in the development of a range of unmanned aerial systems.

Military Intelligence Research Unit.

Powered by an Italian piston engine, the 10m wingspan Sky Scout tactical UAV is being developed for DTI by R V Connex.

State-owned defence industry group Ukroboronprom is pursuing regional license manufacture for its 8x8 BTR-4 armoured personnel carrier (APC). A company representative said it is already in talks with a number of potential customers in

Southeast Asia.The company’s latest success in the region is with the

Indonesian Marine Corps (KORMAR), which ordered an initial five vehicles in 2014 with these delivered in September 2016. KORMAR has a known requirement to replace around 100 ageing BTR-50PK APCs that were acquired from Ukraine in the late 1990s.

The BTR-4s delivered to the KORMAR, which are manufactured by the Kharkov Morozov Machine Building Plant, have been equipped with a ZTM-1 30mm automatic cannon and a coaxial AGS-17 30mm automatic grenade launcher. The vehicles have also been equipped with a nuclear, biological, and chemical (NBC) filtration system.

"We are hoping to expand our already strong relationship with Thailand and the rest of the countries in Southeast Asia which have had good experiences with our products," an Ukroboronprom official said. "We know that there is a significant demand for vehicle modernisation in the region, and some of these vehicles are built in Ukraine followed by technology transfers and local production in the customer’s facilities.”

The Royal Thai Army ordered more than 200 BTR-3E1 APCs between 2008 to 2011, which were manufactured in Ukraine.

Saab has offered a new solution for multi-mission operations at Defense & Security 2017 in Thailand. Thanks to fifty years of expertise with datalink technology for combat aircraft, the company is a leader in multi-system integration involving only progressive software upgrades instead of mid-life upgrades to

reduce costs and maximise investment.Today a four-ship Gripen formation can exchange information about

each aircraft’s weapons payload and fuel flow as well as navigation and target information automatically. A large number of air operations in the Asia Pacific region are conducted over water and airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) is vital for their successful conclusion. These are not necessarily military missions but may include Search and Rescue (SAR), drug surveillance, anti-piracy patrols, or refugee monitoring and involve other agencies such as the coastguard, all of which have to be controlled and coordinated.

The success of such multi-mission operations is not only due to the ships and aircraft involved but to the training of all the personnel involved in the air, on the ground or at sea. Saab is promoting an Air Combat Simulation System concept in which all players could be involved including fighter control and airborne tactical air controllers.

The systems could also be used for technology research and development where the performance of various types of military aircraft could be simulated to test their capabilities before they were selected for service. The Air Combat Simulation System would also be a cost effective way of increasing an air force’s current operational effort.

A current operator of both the Saab Gripen and Saab Erieye AEW&C aircraft, the Royal Thai Air Force has an aspiration to become the best air force in the region by 2019 and Saab is pitching its Air Combat Simulation System concept as an important step in that direction.

Israel’s IMI Systems is offering the company’s experience in upgrading armoured personnel carrier and fighting vehicles as well as main battle tanks (MBTs) at Defense & Security Thailand 2017.

The Royal Thai Army is an experienced operator of armoured vehicles, with large fleets of armoured personnel carriers and fighting

vehicles (APCs and AFVs), as well as main battle tanks (MBTs). It currently maintains a large number of M113 APCs configured for a number of combat and sup port roles, as well as a considerable number of ageing M48 and M60 MBTs.

Although the army will be replacing a portion of its fleet with new platforms, a significant number of vehicles will be retained and in need of modernisation.

IMI Systems has a successful track record of upgrading M113 APCs around the world. For increased protection and survivability, the company’s upgrade package includes add-on ballistic protection, as well as soft- and hard-kill

active protection systems. Firepower is enhanced with a remote controlled weapon station with armament options including 7.62mm, 12.7mm, and 40mm automatic grenade launchers. An improved power pack rated at up to 400hp and suspension system offers greater mobility over various terrain profiles.

A new 1000hp power pack supported by rotary shock absorbers new final drives with superior durability is being offered for improved tank mobility.

While survivability, firepower, and mobility are important aspects of any military vehicle upgrade programme, IMI Systems believes that its ability to integrate these enhancements successfully is what sets the company apart from its competitors.

Israel's Camero Tech has developed the Xaver series of man-portable Sense-Through-The-Wall (STTW) systems to provide troops and law enforcement officers with improved situational awareness in urban terrain. While most STTW systems are

primarily designed to support these groups of personnel in operations such as intelligence gathering, surveillance and reconnaissance, building clearance, and hostage rescue, these technologies have also been successfully applied to humanitarian assistance and disaster relief missions (HADR).

The Xaver systems are capable of presenting information such as the number of people and their location within a room, as well as mapping its general layout with sufficient accuracy to detect non-moving live targets.

The handheld Xaver 100 and compact Xaver 400 systems are particularly relevant for HADR missions as they are easily carried and require minimal preparation for use. Moreover, their compact form factors enable their users to position the devices inside difficult terrain such as a collapsed structure.

Both systems operate in the 3-10 GHz frequency and are capable of detecting movement through 20m of wall materials such as adobe, brick, cement, drywall, plaster, concrete and reinforced concrete, stucco, and other commonly used building materials.

While the handheld system is capable of providing the user with an indication of target presence, movement direction, and distance, the compact unit provides additional details in the form of range-over-time data as well as a 3D view of the target area.

The company’s technology has been used by rescue teams during the September 2017 Mexico earthquake, reportedly saving a number of people trapped under rubble.

D&S exhibitior FLIR Systems has announced the latest addition to its identiFINDER R-Series handheld radiation detection product line, the FLIRidentiFINDERR440.

The FLIR identiFINDER R440 is handheld, provides rapid detection, and highly accurate identification during survey missions and screening operations. Weighing less than1.5kg, the company claims that the FLIRidentiFINDER R440 is the industry’s smallest and lightest radioisotope identification device (RIID)with a 2x2in sodium iodide (NaI) detector.

Claimed to have three and a half times more sensitivity than similarly-sized RIIDs, responders can detect radiation from farther distances and behind heavier shielding. It delivers ten percent better resolution than other products in the category, with fewer false alarms.

Due to its extended energy range, the identiFINDER R440 detects gamma radiation and can indicate the presence of neutrons found in special nuclear materials. The device has built-in wireless communications and features a new 360-degree EasyFinder mode that pinpoints and instructs the operator to the exact location of a radiation source.

The FLIR identiFINDER R440 meets the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) N42.34 standard, has been drop-tested up to one meter, and is the industry’s only IP67-rated RIID, which means it can withstand rain, splashing, and accidental submersion.

“The new level of sensitivityand resolution of the FLIRidentiFINDER R440 provides the ability to perform quick situational assessment during radiological emergencies,” said Jim Cannon, president and CEO of FLIR.

With military aircraft fleets in the Asia Pacific becoming increasingly diverse but also mature, Honeywell is positioning itself to address future aerospace maintenance, repair, and

overhaul (MRO) and upgrade requirements in the region with an emphasis on partnerships with local industries.

Ron Lopez, senior director APAC sales of Honeywell’s Asia Pacific Defense and Space division, noted that there is significant potential for growth with regional countries maintaining robust defence spending and acquiring new and more capable aircraft and mission systems. However, many of these countries also operate legacy platforms which are in need of modernisation.

“While Honeywell doesn’t build aircraft or vehicles, we develop, manufacture, and supply systems and components that are key enablers of many commercial and defense platforms in use around the world today,” Lopez said.

Honeywell is a significant content provider in the Royal Thai Air Force’s four T-50 Golden Eagle advanced trainer/light combat aircraft manufactured by Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), supplying key avionics components such as the Embedded Global Positioning System/Inertial Navigation System (EGI), radar altimeter, lighting and Electric Flight Instrument (EFI) system for the aircraft. These advanced avionics will improve aircraft performance and reliability, as well as increase aircrew safety. The T/FA-50 platform has also been acquired by the Indonesian and Philippine Air Forces.

Honeywell is also eyeing upgrade opportunities to support the region’s large fleets of F-16 combat aircraft - in service with Indonesia, South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand – with its avionics systems, in particular the Common Colour Multi-Function Display (CCMFD), Enhanced Colour

Besides combat aircraft, the company believes that there is also significant opportunity for military transport aircraft and helicopters. It has proposed its C-130H avionics modernisation programme (AMP) to Taiwan as part of a wider effort to partner with local industry to meet the Republic of China Air Force’s growing modernisation requirements.

Honeywell has performed significant work in Taiwan, partnering with its Aerospace Industrial Development Corporation to support major programmes such as the F-CK-1 Indigenous Defense Fighter and AT-3 Advanced Jet Trainer. Elsewhere in the region, it has also proposed a number of upgrades to the Republic of Korea Air Force’s CH-47 Chinook heavy-lift helicopters, UH-60 Black Hawk utility helicopter, C-130 transport aircraft, and the T/FA-50 advanced trainer/light combat aircraft.

“A key part of our strategy is to empower our regional partners by transferring to them technical expertise and technology, which will enable them to be smarter and stronger and operate their platforms much more

effectively and safely,” said Lopez, noting that Honeywell’s recent success in Indonesia demonstrates the company’s commitment to local industry.

In March 2017, Honeywell signed a contract with the state-owned aircraft manufacturer PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI) to supply 34 TPE331 turboprop engines for its indigenous NC212i aircraft. As part of the deal, the company will train six PTDI engineers to promote line-maintenance skills and transfer technical knowledge to Indonesian companies.

“Our strategy in Thailand is evolving and we are engaging with local industry to understand the Royal Thai Air Force’s requirements while delivering these capabilities locally through these partners,” Lopez said.

The Philippines has down selected the Embraer EMB 314 Super Tucano light attack aircraft to replace the aging Philippine Air Force OV-10 Bronco. Under the Department of National Defense “1st Horizon”

procurement programme to re-equip the Philippine Armed Forces (PAF) by 2025, the Super Tucano was evaluated by the PAF along with the Textron AT-6 which failed to pass the Air Force’s evaluation programme.

Powered by 1,600shp (1,200kw) Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-68C turboprop, the Super Tucano is armed with two internal, wing-mounted .50 cal. machine guns and can carry various ordnance on five weapon

hardpoints including Giat NC621 20mm cannon pods, Mk 81/82 bombs, MAA-1 Piranha AAMs, BLG-252 cluster bombs, and SBAT-70/19 or LAU-68A/G rocket pods on its underwing stations. It has a night-vision goggle (NVG)-compatible glass cockpit with hands-on-throttle-and-stick (HOTAS) controls.

The PAF has a requirement for six Embraer Super Tucanos with options for additional aircraft in the future.

The Indonesian Air Force (Tentara Nasional Indonesia-Angkatan Udara, TNI–AU) has ordered a total of 16 Super Tucanos, the last of which were delivered in September 2014, and the aircraft has been offered to the Royal Thai Air Force.

The Embraer Super Tucano light attack aircraft on the short list to the Philippines Air Force.
