What is Fishery?What is Overfishing?

• Fishery – An area with a large population of valuable ocean organisms.

• Overfishing – To fish to such a degree as to upset the ecological balance or cause depletion of living creatures.

Where are the major fisheries?

• Grand Banks off Newfoundland

• Georges Bank off New England

• Monterey Canyon off California

What is Sustainable Yield?

• Sustainable Yield – A regular amount of a renewable resource that can be harvested without reducing the future supply.

Fisheries can maintain a sustainable yield by people not overfishing in lakes, oceans, rivers or ponds.

For example trees are being cut down to make paper. The best way is to replant the trees that were cut down so we won’t run out of trees in the future.

What is Aquaculture?

• Aquaculture – The practice of raising fish and other water organisms for food.

A farm but…. with fish

Pros about aquaculture• The fish live and are

raised in artificial ponds or bays

• Salmon, catfish, and shrimp are farmed in the fish farm way (aquaculture)

Cons about aquaculture• Not the perfect solution• The artificial ponds and

bays replace their natural habitats

• Maintaining these farms can cause pollution

• Spread diseases into wild fish populations
