Forms and Conventio

ns

On my rational I stated two clear points and one extremely vague one point to convey the forms and conventions of the magazine target audience:

Target Audience

The yellow highlighted words are the clear points on my forms and conventions of the target audience. The green highlights are the convention and the way I will attract my target audience. However the red highlighted area is the extremely vague demographic because ‘anyone who enjoys...’ could be female and of any ages!

I will go into more detail on how I achieved on targeting my target audience as we go through the slides...

“Male teenagers and young adults from the ages of 16 to 24”

Front Cover: Use of Masthead and Artist

‘HYPE’ indicates a sense of buzz and excitement so straight away the masthead states the target range because ‘old people’ will not purchase a magazine with that name. In addition only the young generation (teenagers & young adults) are hype and would recognize the meaning of hype as it is directed as a jargon word

The artist image is close to my target audience age range so therefore my artist can relate to him. Also he is black and male and that is another element of convention.

Contents Page: DRE BEATS

This section of the contents page the male teenagers and young adults from ages 16-24 can enjoy, because everyone likes a chance to win something for FREE. The fact that it is DRE BEATS which has just been released retailed at £199 makes it more exciting for the generation whom it interest more!

Double Page Spread: relationship with younger male audience

‘East London’ set the location of the artist and later we find ‘gazes into the wilderness he calls home’ which creates a relationship between him and every Londoner because we can relate to him. I choice not to target an English artist only since my artist specks the American vernacular and my artist can do a Dizzy Rascal and move to America in his future.

‘The teenager’ so my artist is a teenager like my readers! In addition ‘young talent’ indicates whom this is targeted at clearly and some can relate to that and maybe be inspired. Furthermore I made him speak the American Hip-Hop language so he can fit in the genre.

Stabbing is common in London

Anyone who enjoys listening to Urban music

Front Cover: Sell Lines:The sell lines are the main reason why a magazine would get bought. In my rational I said “Anyone who...” the fashion sell line can relate to anyone and the name brand ‘GUCCI’ can entice a higher class audience. So the brand can grab anyone’s attention and therefore sell this magazine.

Having a bold artist such has DOCTOR DRE is key to a successful magazine plus the element of the new DRE BEATS being released can be very persuasive and to find out later that you can win it for free is simply magnificent.

Clear date and title!

Contents Page: All these features can benefit anyone which who enjoys listening to Urban Music (not just hip-hop). The features are all spread out and not just about music, there is fashion tips, technology and many more!Double Page Spread:The whole of the double page spread I made it interesting to everyone who listens to urban music by having every element of Artist info, enticing stories, humour and making sure its all mixed with URBAN MUSIC.

My magazine will feature the latest news, gossip, fashion, reviews and artists in the current scene.

Double Page Spread: Exclusive Interview Money MitchThis is a preview of my artist and inside holds an Exclusive Interview

Contents Page: Covers, News, Reviews and TechnologyThe contents page has these as sub-headings. As titles I choice the best titles for the sub-headings because Weezy in jail is hip-hop breaking news, Dre Beats are the God’s Gift to Hip-Hop Tech, Gucci is one off the most expensive name brands and Money Mitch is my chosen artist!Front Page: Sell Lines

My sell lines are very pleasing to the eye and also the information is very enticing and meets all my requirements which I set in my rational ‘ feature latest news, gossip, fashion review and artist’

Social Representational Issues

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hip_hop#Social_impact

Social groups established in Hip-Hop

Sex, Drugs, Money and Violence play a vital part in hip-hop. Hip-Hop is always described as the main reason for youth

violence because they believe teenagers listen to the artist talking about ‘Gun’s’ and go and copy...

Also Hip-hop videos constantly have sexuality which shouldn’t be endorsed to teenagers, some video’s are extremely close to looking like a porno!

In addition most video have artist which represent gang’s such as ‘Bloods and Crip’s’ and in the video they show their colours etc. This is a problem because teenagers might look at gangs being cool and the life they want to be in because of their preferred artist.

Moreover artist have problems with one and other (beef) which can turn ugly as well as violent and all this is shown through their music.

Social groups established in Hip-Hop

How does HYPE represent the Hip-Hop music society?

Using ‘Lil Wayne’ as a sell line made it possible for my target audience to recognise my magazine and it gives it more value. This can also teach teenagers that this hip-hop life isn't all glamour and red carpets, their is a dark side to everything. Having known artist on my magazine makes it easier for me to write about something my target audience know about.

My magazine is targeted for teenagers aged 16-24, so i included a free chance to win the brand new DRE BEATS. This is significant to hop-hop because DRE is an important figure in hip-hop and his new headphones are a must have item, so this appeals more to my target audience than a free CD for example! The use of language was a key factor to consider when writing my double page spread. This section i have print screened is important because it clearly shows Money Mitch my artist using the hip-hop slang. Ending the column with ‘YA DIG’ sums up everything that is related to language of hip-hop.

Institutions

On the left is my rational which I stated clearly that there is no specific location that I am aiming for just anyone whom enjoys the urban scene.

The main reason is because Hip-Hop is not a secluded market and it is really worldwide, there is hip-hop in every country. However the American – English relationship is close and the music scene is also tightening its relation

I would like HYPE to be sold at most music stores including HMV. I believe it will get more reception at book stores such as WHsmith.

Institutions

I done some research (questionnaires) and asked four questions, then I put it into a pie chart. This was significant because it will help me with my location and other qualitative feedback which is needed for a successful magazine. In conclusion I found that people will pay between £2-3 for a magazine, they look for a magazine with gossip, they purchase a magazine every week and the type of music people listen to is mainly RnB which is linked to Hip-Hop anyway its all under the urban music tree!

Technical Methods and Construction

PhotographyThe photography stage sounded easy at first but I soon realised it was going to be a challenge. Finding the artist and dressing him to look like your artist (mise-en-scene) then taking pictures from different angles, missing around with lighting and location. Was all aspects I had to consider, I started of taking a handful of pictures from two different artist then choosing the one I preferred. I had less pictures of the artist on the right however his pictures looked better so I choose him!

As I took my pictures inside their was no problem with lighting, I only had natural ambient light to play with so I had more control. However having a busy artist at a busy time was a problem because I had to rush the pictures also keep stopping while he answers phone etc at the same time as still keeping the quality as high as possible...

Artist issue’s

Useless and non-relevant imagesI was trigger happy and took so many pictures, however I believed it was good to have many because I could pick from the collection. On the other hand some pictures was just simply a waste of time and memory space!

Progression between Prelim and Main Magazine Tasks

Photography SkillsWhen I did the Preliminary task, I used my camera phone because i had no camera to hand plus I was new to all the different camera shot’s. I had to make sure I focus in my lesson and I get as much practise as possible with the different terms and the different styles of photography there was in order to produce a advanced front cover for my music magazine.

In the music magazine task, I felt like a professional camera man because I had a proper camera and had to mess around with mise-en-scene, lighting (especially exposure), angles and types of shots in order to capture exactly what I had entailed.
