B erthoud businesses and or- ganizations have published calendars for many years. One of the first 12-month calendars known to have been offered to the community was produced by merchant and harness racer Andy Fairbairn, who operated his business in the building that now houses the Subway sandwich shop at the southwest corner of Third Street and Mountain Avenue. In January of 1916 The Berthoud Bulletin pro- moted the calendar when it announced, “The Fairbairn Lumber & Mercantile com- pany is giving out calen- dars to its patrons this week — a trifle late on account of unavoidable delay. On each calendar is a photograph of Mr. Fairbairn’s horse, Glenn Weaver. This animal was sired by Teddy Weaver, the well-known horse owned by Mr. Fairbairn a few years ago. Glenn Weaver was bred by J. Glenn Woods, hence the Glenn. Trainer Crandall of Longmont has the horse in charge.” No copy of the Fairbairn Lumber & Mercantile calendar is known to re- main in existence. For many years local businesses such as the Berthoud National Bank, Schreiner’s Mortuary, Snow White Grocery and Berthoud Hardware pro- duced complimentary calen- dars for their patrons. In the 1960s the Berthoud High School Band generally assembled a cal- endar that featured a fancy portrait of the uniformed musicians in all their re- galia. Examples of several of these calendars may be found in the collections of the Berthoud Historical Society. In 1988 the Town of Berthoud and a community-minded board of trustees composed of Mayor Tommy Fellows, Richard Strahan, James LeFeber, Paul Vaughan, Lloyd Conder, Jack Olinger and Tom Patterson produced a Berthoud Centennial calendar that was filled with photos that Helen McCarty-Fickel had gathered for the Berthoud Historical Society. In 1992 the Berthoud National Bank that was located at the north- west corner of Third Street and Mountain Avenue celebrated the centennial of its existence with a cal- endar that pictured its founders, the T.C. Bunyan family, and its employ- ees. The Berthoud Historical Society, a not-for-profit corporation, began producing calendars as a means to raise funds for the operation of the Little Thompson Valley Pioneer Museum in 2004. The 2004 calen- dar kicked off a series of four farm- themed calendars that culminated in 2007. The calendars were filled with vintage photographs collected by the Berthoud Historical Society and mod- ern photos taken by Tom Vaughan and Jon Youngblut. Themes including Berthoud’s historic downtown busi- ness district dominated the organiza- tion’s calendar from 2008 to 2010. In 2013 the Berthoud Historical Society resumed calendar production with “Berthoud — 125 Years” to mark the town’s incorporation in 1888 and to celebrate the intervening decades. This year the society has produced “Newsworthy Berthoud,” a 2014 cal- endar that features photographs that once appeared in local newspapers along with the front page articles that accompanied them. This weekend the “Newsworthy Berthoud” 2014 calendar goes on sale at the Little Thompson Valley Pioneer Museum, the McCarty-Fickel Home house museum and various busi- nesses in the community. Calendars will be sold for $12 each. For more in- formation call the Pioneer Museum at 970-532-2147.
