bwin.com Kitesurf Pro brings the world’s best riders
together in Tarifa for a competition packed with
thrills and risk.
This event is part of the PKRA World Championship
The World Kitesurfing Championship is coming to Valdevaqueros Beach in Tarifa
(Spain). A great place for this exciting sport and the second time bwin.com
Kitesurf Pro has been staged. Due to the success of last year’s competition,
the event is now part of the official PKRA (Professional Kiteboard Riders
Association) World Tour.
Kitesurfing combines elements of surfing, windsurfing and paragliding. The
competition is organised by the Austrian-based company bwin, one of the
world’s leading providers of online gaming entertainment, now sponsoring a
series of sporting events throughout the continent.
The event, scheduled for 5 to 10 September, will pit top international
kitesurfers against one another in a competition of courage and skill. The
competition has already attracted 32 male kiters, including the world’s top
twelve, and six female contestants.
Valdevaqueros beach, over 5.5 km
long, is one of the best places in
the world for kitesurfing and other
water sports.
bwin.com Kitesurf Pro includes a competition that counts towards the 2006
PKRA World Tour and a Big Air Tricks day, to be held on the last two day of the
event. At this event riders will showcase their kiteboard jumping skills,
performing risky tricks.
bwin Group – Press Release – Monday, 4 September 2006 4
All the thrills of this young adventure sport make the event a must for
professionals and amateurs alike – there are some 15,000 kitesurfing
enthusiasts in Spain alone – but also for the general public, who can watch the
breathtaking aerobatics from the beach. In addition to this visual treat, extra
entertainment will also be laid on for both participants and spectators.
The world’s best
The best riders on the circuit have already confirmed that they will be
participating in bwin.com Kitesurf Pro. They include the twelve best male
riders in the world, headed by Britain’s Aaron Hadlow, current top ranker.
Spanish participants include Alvaro Onieva, one of the best in the world and

Women riders will include Spanish rider Angela Peral, currently 5
th
in the
world ranking, along with five of the six best professionals at the moment,
headed by Polish rider Ania Grzelinska (2nd

Angela Peral will be displaying her kitesurfing skills
in Tarifa.
The competition
The PKRA competition will be a freestyle event in which riders will challenge
each other in pairs, kitesurfing before a jury who will evaluate their
manoeuvres, rating riders’ technique and level of difficulty. The winner of each
head-to-head will go on to the next round, and so on until the final.
The twelve men and six women at the top of the ranking are automatically
qualified to participate, whilst the other participants are drawn from previous
heats and trials (16 men and eight women) along with the wild cards (invites)
held by the organisers. The result is a total of 32 men and 16 women
contestants.
Thanks to the innovative spirit of the Tarifa event, the competition will also
feature an additional exhibition round of Big Air Tricks. This focus of this new
round will be on aerobatic tricks, with points for the height at which they are
executed. The manoeuvres are very spectacular, and can easily be appreciated
by spectators watching from the beach.
bwin Group – Press Release – Monday, 4 September 2006 6
This part of the event will be a new departure for the sport: although it will not
count towards the World Championship, big cash prizes will be awarded. Big Air
Tricks participants will include two of the major stars of the kitesurfing world:
Spaniard Jaime Herraiz and Argentinean Martin Vari. This will be a unique
opportunity to enjoy action from two of the greatest exponents of the sport.
Six days of fun and thrills
The entertainment organised in parallel with this exciting competition will
include a concert by Ojos de Brujo in the Bull Ring at 10.30 p.m. on Friday 8
September. This group of 12 musicians will be presenting their newest album,
Techari, launched earlier this year. This will give the audience a chance to enjoy
one of the most innovative fusion groups on the Spanish scene, fronted by
Marina “La Canillas".
Tarifa, a unique location
Tarifa, known as Europe's “wind capital”, is the perfect location for water
sports, especially wind and surf sports such as windsurfing and kitesurfing. The
growing popularity of these sports, particularly amongst younger participants,
has made the town a Mecca for board riders, with many professional riders
living in Tarifa and training on the beaches here.
