Looking at the pattern of the subject of articles it has evolved from more focused organizational issues to subjects of general interest. This is perhaps because the audience for this newsletter has become more diverse! Initially, when it was started, the readers were only organizational level, but slowly moved to alumni located in different states and countries. The newest addition to the readership is Senior Citizens Welfare Trust, Dharwad. Hence, the drive to write on general topics of common interest like in this issue! This issue talks on Art of Healthy Living. The crux of the issue is that it is easier said than done. It demands great determination, motivation, attitudinal changes, a system’s approach, and a penchant for disciplined lifestyle from us common individuals - and who for that matter are unwilling to change ourselves in any way or give up the comforts and taste of enticing modern and unnatural (junk) food. The road to better health is paved with the small decisions we make every day. Healthy Living doesn't happen at the doctor's office but depend on our day-to-day living style, culture, and system in our families and workplace. The previous issues of the BVBCET NEWSELETTERS carried editorial articles on technical and managerial subjects like communication, personality development for students, characteristics of world class institutions, scientific management, organizational culture, perception as a cognitive factor of human behavior, Management-by-exception (MBE) principle for empowering and building leadership qualities in rank-and-file employees Students’ feedback, ethics and values at the workplace and its impact on attitudes and behavior of employees, and Gandhian Engineering.

Looking at the pattern of the subject of articles it has evolved from more focused organizational issues to subjects of general interest. It’s heartening to know that nowadays most of the younger generation (and old-young) are bitten by KEEP FIT bug and make a beeline to gyms for a toned and well built body. Following a good diet and food habits is equally important. Our mood is affected by the type of food consumed. Every one of us would have experienced that while we wake up in the morning we would be feeling fresh and as the day goes by our mood will change either better or worse according to the food we eat. WHAT’S THE CONNECTION BETWEEN OUR FOOD AND BEHAVIOUR? The connection between the foods we eat and our mood lies basically on the chemicals called the neurotransmitters-the chemical messengers which relay thoughts and actions. They are nothing but the chemical substances passed from one cell to the other through which the brain works. These brain chemicals motivate, sedate, focus or frustrate us.

Carbs (carbodydrate) are actually the body's preferred choice of fuel. The trick is to choose healthful complex carbs such as fruits, veggies, and whole grains.

What ignited my mind to relate type and nature of food ingested and one’s health (and motivation for this editorial topic) was a recent visit to one University in North. Spread over 400 acres the infrastructure included office buildings, laboratories, independent living quarters and apartments, ponds with swans, exotic trees carefully planted that attracted exotic birds, gardens, gym, Yoga Hall, flood lit tennis, football, and Volley ball courts, horse riding court, shopping complex, dispensary with ambulances, and… an impressive 10,000 capacity dining hall with BOSE audio system, and a cow DAIRY to supply milk every day. Body is exercised by just moving within the campus every day. What impressed me more was the ADMINISTRATIVE POLICY concerning health (and hence mood and behavior) of faculty and students!!! Everybody on campus must compulsorily have food in the centralized dining hall – morning breakfast, afternoon lunch, evening tea/snacks, and evening dinner. To implement this policy an amount of Rs.1600 per person in the family was straightway deducted from salary. Food was FREE for the faculty member who was employed!!!Half liter of pure unadulterated milk per person in a family was supplied free of cost every day in the evening to boot!!! What further impressed me more was the systematic planning of food items. Only vegetarian food served. Morning breakfast comprised corn flakes with milk, sprouted cereals, bread and jam and a big TUMBLER of milk. Lunch and dinner comprised chapattis, vegetables, leafy vegetables, boiled egg, sprouted cereals, daal, rice, curd, fruits (banana/orange/apple), and fruit salad, evening tea / tumbler of milk with biscuits.

What are the benefits of adapting such a system? Hardly any records of any student or faculty member falling ill or even suffering from any form of common stomach problems like indigestion!!! All people exhibited a spirit of enthusiasm even during the fag end of the day.

It is my experience that everyone falls in line when there exists a system in the organization. It relates not only to the academics but even to non-academic work life in the campus. With the passage of time every student and faculty and family members easily adapted and got used to the new system of food menu and timings. After all, any organizational policies with the welfare and concern for people in mind always find acceptance.

To conclude, It has been proven that by eating the right foods we can Boost our IQ, Improve our mood and behavior, be more emotionally stable, and Sharpen our memory. it is good to Consume every day only vegetarian, wholesome, nutritious, and non-spicy food in the right quantity, of the right quality, in the right and appropriate manner, at the right time, and at the right place. Remember, our stomach is analogous to an ‘engine’ of an automobile. To keep engine clean and healthy, to prolong engine life and reduce pollution it is recommended to feed high-value fuel like SPEED and POWER and undertake preventive maintenance at regular intervals. Likewise, we must maintain similar strict regime for upkeep and maintenance of our stomach by avoiding junk food (pani puri, seva puri, mirchi pakoda, coca cola/pepsi). Regular maintenance of stomach can be carried by giving rest to our stomach for a certain period of time at proper intervals every week.

A Good Planned Diet with care and appropriate knowledge influences our behavior and help to develop good human values Thus, we can have good relationships at the workplace, and in family, which in turn will lead to efficient community and developed country. “AFTER ALL WE ARE WHAT WE EAT”

A case study during the symposium on “Towards Achieving Excellence in IT Education” on 20th February 2010 at MSRIT, Bangalore. A Vachana Gayana program by Shri Sripad Hegade and Shakti Patil was organized in the

evening of 18 February, 2010. Mrs Sudha Murty was the special guest. Earlier in the day Mrs Sudha Murty participated in the interaction session on Career Guidance for VI Semester students. The 7th IT Akshaya Pratibha, 2009-10-- a South India IT Competition/Exhibition for school

students, jointly organized by VAPS KNOWLEDGE SERVICES PVT. LTD., Bangalore & BVBCET and co-sponsored by Indiga Group of Companies, UAE, was organized on 6-7 February 2010. 487 boys, 432 girl students, and 115 teachers from 40 schools across Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu attended the IT Exhibition cum Competition. Shri. Jagadesh, Minister for Rural Development, GoK, Shri. Basavaraj Patil Sedam, Ex.MP, Chief Coordinator, Hyderabad-Karnataka Abhivrudahi Vibhag-Sedam, Shri. R Siddesh, CEO-VAPS Knowledge Services Pvt.Ltd., and Shri. S L Bhat, Convenor were present during the inaugural function on 6 February. The Valedictory function on 7 February was presided by Justice Dr. M Rama Jois, Rajya Sabha Member, Former Governor of Bihar & Jharkand and Former Chief Justice

Dr. Suresh B.Kapatkar, Prof. & Head of Physics department, presented a

research paper “Thermodynamic parameters of a liquid crystal using density measurement studies”, co-authored by Dr. N.H.Ayachit and Smt.J.S.Doddamani, in the National Seminar on Condensed matter Physics – 2010, Tripura University, Tripura on 16/02/2010. A paper titled “Characterization of Mechanical Properties of Groundnut Shell Reinforced

Polymer Composites” was presented by G. U. Raju, Department of Mechanical Engineering in International Conference on ‘Recent Trends in Materials and Characterization’ (RETMAC – 2010) at National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal on February 14 – 15, 2010. Profile of a distinguished alumnus - Madame Sudha Murty Madame Sudha Murty, wife of Shri. Narayana Murty - Chairman and Chief Mentor Officer, Infosys Technologies Limited, is the founder trustee and chair-person of Infosys Foundation that has been contributing to the society very actively in the field of Medicine and Education.

She has been a great and exceptional student and excelled in her academic carrier. She passed SSLC with highest marks in the school level in 1966 from Girls English School, Hubli. She did B.E. in Electrical Engineering from BVBCT-Karnatak University in 1972 securing first rank in all semesters and received a gold medal from

the Indian Institute of Engineers (India), Silver medal & Cash Award from the then Chief Minister of Karnataka Sri Devaraj Urs for securing the highest marks in BE of all the Universities of Engineering in Karnataka, C S Desai Prize for standing first in the University Exams of Karnataka and Youth Services Department Prize from GoK for having been the outstanding engineering student of Karnataka. She completed her M.Tech. in Computer Science in 1974 from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore securing I rank.

She was also the first woman engineer to be selected in Telco (Telco then had a men-only policy) and worked as Development Engineer in Pune, Mumbai, and Jameshedpur. She also worked as HoD of Computer Science and a Visiting Professor in PG Centre in a reputed college of Bangalore University. She involved in the development of Infosys from its infant stages and worked in various capacities and been very much part of its success.

Some of the Professional Awards bestowed on her at National and International level are Padmashree from the GoI, Karnataka Rajyotsava State Award, Paul Harris Award, Golden Peacock Award, Millennium Mahila Shiromani Award, Computer World Award, Mother Teresa Memorial International Award, International and Area Studies Global Leaders Award by Varsity of California, Best Teacher Award from the Rotary Club, Sir M Vishweshwaraiah Navratna Award for Social Service by Surve Cultural Academy - to name a few.

A prolific writer in English and Kannada, her publication includes fictional and non fictional works, children stories, novels, technical books, and travelogues. She is the recipient of many literati awards namely, Goruru Award for her collection of short stories Uncommon Characters among common people, R K Narayan Award, Attimabbe Award for her technical book in Kannada Computer for School Children, CR Patil Award for contribution to social work and literature, Lingaraj Prashasthi for Kannada Short Stories Collection, Lakshmi N Menon Award by AICEIW, New Delhi, M K Indira Award for Paridhi novel, and Mahila Datti Prashashti from Kannada Sahitya Parishat for Yerilitada Dariyalli. She holds Honorary Doctorates for Literature from the Gulbarga Varsity, Karnataka Univesity, Sathyabhama Deemed Varsity, and many others. Madame .Sudha Murty is a social worker and is known for her philanthropic work through the Infosys Foundation. Among other things, she has initiated a move to provide all government schools in Karnataka with computer and library facilities.

Green tea contains healthful substances that can penetrate eye tissues raising the possibility that the tea may protect against glaucoma and other eye diseases.

With a view to promote the pursuit of excellence in the field of engineering, The Institution of Engineers (India) has instituted IEI Young Engineers Award of Rs.10000 and a Citation. The purpose of the award is to recognize outstanding achievements/contributions made by young engineers in engineering research, excellence in engineering technology development, technology transfer, etc. Age limit – 35 years as on March 31, 2010.
