APPLEGATE RESERVOIR: trout, largemouth bass, smallmouthbassThe reservoir was stocked last week with 9,000 legal-sized rainbowtrout. Fishing for trout has been very good all over the lake, withmost boats limiting out. Boat anglers are trolling plugs, lures, andnight crawlers. Bank anglers are doing well using bait. Largemouthbass are moving into the shallows in preparation for spawning as thewater warms. The water level at Applegate Reservoir was 1987 feetas of May 25. The Copper and Hart-Tish Boat Ramps are open. Dailyreservoir level in feet above sea level can be obtained by calling 1-800-472-2434.

BEN IRVING RESERVOIR: rainbow trout, bassBen Irving Reservoir, west of Winston, was stocked in 2009 with5,000 trout, including 1,000 weighing 1.5-2 lbs. This year’s stockinghas begun with over 3,000 trout being stocked so far this year.

CHETCO RIVER: cutthroat troutCutthroat trout fishing should slowly pick up as flows drop and theriver warms up. Some of the best ways to catch cutthroat are fly fish-ing or tossing small spinners.

COOPER CREEK RESERVOIR: rainbow troutCooper Creek was stocked in 2009 with about 11,050 trout, of which2,000 were 1.5-2 lbs each. So far this year Cooper Creek has beenstocked with over 6,000 trout. Half of those trout have been stockedin recent weeks. Fishing should improve as the water temperatureswarm up.

COOS COUNTY LAKES: rainbow troutLegal sized trout were stocked this month in Bluebill, Bradley, Eel,Saunders, Powers, Empire, and Tenmile Lakes. Trout have beenstocked in the Millicoma Pond at the Millicoma Interpretive Centerand fishing is excellent. Millicoma Pond is set aside for kids fishingonly and is a great chance for them to hook into fish. Please call be-fore traveling to Millicoma Pond to make sure the gates are open. The phone number is (541)267-2557. Trout have been biting onworms, small spinners, or flies. The 2010 trout stocking schedule isposted on the ODFW Web site.

COOS RIVER BASIN: trout, sturgeon, rockfish, Dungeness crab, clamsTrout fishing in the bay and rivers will open May 22. Angling is re-stricted to artificial flies and lures in streams above tidewater. A fewsturgeon have been caught in Isthmus Slough but overall sturgeonfishing is slow in Coos Bay. Sand shrimp is one of the better baits touse for catching sturgeon. Anglers are reminded that new regulationsban the retention of green sturgeon in all Oregon waters. Fishing forrockfish and greenling around the jetties in the lower bay has beengood. Be cautious when fishing this part of the bay because weatherconditions can change quickly. A jig with a plastic twister tail is agood bait to use for rockfish, while a sand shrimp on or near the bot-tom will work great for greenling. Digging for bay clams will be fairthis week even with the lack of negative tides. There are goodplaces to dig for clams even on positive low tides. Good places todig for clams in Coos Bay are near Charleston, off Cape Argo High-way, and Clam Island. For more information on shellfish in Coos Bayclick on the following link: Shellfish Assessment of Coastal Oregon. Before any shellfish harvest trip, make sure to check the Oregon De-partment of Agriculture website for any recent shellfish closures re-cent shellfish closures athttp://oregon.gov/ODA/FSD/shellfish_status.shtmlRecreational crab harvest inside the bay has been slow for thosewith boats and for those crabbing from the docks. Red rock crabs arethe main harvest lately. The best baits to use are fish, chicken, orturkey legs.

COQUILLE RIVER BASIN: troutTrout fishing in the bay and rivers will open May 22. Angling is re-stricted to artificial flies and lures in streams above tidewater.

DIAMOND LAKE: rainbow troutDiamond Lake is now ice free and the Diamond Lake campground isopen to camping. Angling has been good with many people catchingtheir limit. Most anglers are using PowerBait although spinners areworking well too. Fish are ranging in size from 11 to over 20 incheslong. Conditions will improve as the water temperatures warm. Con-tact the resort for the latest fishing news at 1-800-733-7593 ext. 238.

ELK/SIXES RIVER: cutthroat troutAs June approaches, cutthroat fishing should pick up. Anglers willwant to fish early or late in the day for a chance at catching some ofthe bigger cutthroat that live in most of the holes in both rivers.

EMIGRANT RESERVOIR: rainbow trout, largemouth bass, small-mouth bass, crappieEmigrant Reservoir was recently stocked with legal-sized rainbowtrout. Fishing for trout has been good on PowerBait, worms, and sin-gle eggs. Bass and panfish are moving into the shore and fishing forthem has improved. Anglers should be aware that a health advisoryhas been issued recommending limits on consumption of all fish fromEmigrant except rainbow trout. Information on the Emigrant Reser-voir advisory, along with general information on mercury and fish canbe found on the DHS Web site.

FISH LAKE: rainbow troutFish Lake was stocked recently with 5,000 legal-sized and 500 largerrainbow trout. Fishing has been very good from boats, with lots oflimits coming in. Larger fish are ranging in size from 12-15 incheswith some up to 18 inches. Bank anglers have been catching trout onPowerBait, Velveeta cheese, and worms. Anglers should be pre-pared for winter conditions. The USFS campground and boat ramp isopen. Camp sites and cabins are available at the Fish Lake Resort(541-949-5800).

Coho stocked last year are about 12 to 14 inches longnow and have been biting recently. About 13,000 more coho smoltswere stocked this spring. They should be legal-sized this summer. Allof the coho smolts have been adipose fin-clipped. In GalesvilleReservoir, all landlocked salmon are considered trout. Thus, there isa five per day trout limit, with only one trout over 20 inches in lengthallowed for harvest. Galesville was also stocked with about 1,000adipose clipped steelhead that are 8-inches long. To date Galesvillehas been stocked with over 6,500 legal sized trout. Call 541-837-3302 for information on campingand boat launching conditions.

GARRISON LAKE: rainbow trout, cutthroat troutTrout fishing continues to be good, but weed growth is making thingsa little tougher. Anglers willing to brave the weather will be rewardedwith trout up to 20 inches. Some of the best fishing access can befound at the 12th street boat ramp and fishing pier. Boat anglersshould keep an eye on the weather as the lake can be very windy.Boat anglers are reminded to clean all aquatic vegetation off theirboats and trailers before heading home to help control the spreadnon-native plants and animals.

HEMLOCK LAKE & LAKE OF THE WOODS: troutAlthough Lake of the Woods has already been stocked once thisspring, the road to Hemlock Lake is still snowed in, consequentlyHemlock will not be stocked for Memorial Day Weekend.

HOWARD PRAIRIE RESERVOIR: trout, bassFishing for rainbow trout has been really good, with trout in the 12 to14 and 16 to 18-inch range landed. Joel at the resort said that a 2foot long, 6 pound rainbow was caught two weeks ago, and he heardthat a 7 pounder was caught last. Boats are doing best trolling tripleteasers, blue tazmanian devils, and wedding rings. Bank anglers aredoing best using chartreuse Power Bait or worms. The Willow Pointboat ramp is closed due to construction. Bass are moving into theshallows and are starting to bite.

HYATT LAKE: trout, bassHyatt Lake was recently stocked with 6,000 legal-sized rainbow trout.Fishing for them along with the trout stocked last year has been verygood for the last 2 weeks. Folks at the resort claim that anglerslanded a 4 pound and a 7 pound fish recently. Both boat and bankanglers are limiting out with many fish in the 12-18 inch range. Bobat the resort cautioned that the fish have a soft mouth, and he recom-mended using a light weight leader. Bass have not yet started to bite. The main BLM campground and boat ramp are open.

ILLINOIS RIVER: trout, steelheadThe Illinois River opened to the harvest of adipose fin clipped rain-bow trout on May 22.

LAIRD LAKE: rainbow troutLocated about 30 miles up Elk River, Laird Lake is an excellent placeto catch a few trout. The lake is small and filled with lots of downedtimber. Bank access is pretty good. Elk River Hatchery is located onthe road to Laird and is good place to stop and take a quick tour.

LAKE MARIE: rainbow troutLake Marie is at Umpqua Lighthouse State Park near Winchester.About 4,000 trout were stocked during 2009. Lake Marie receivedabout 400 lunker trout (1lb+) just before Labor Day weekend. Thelake has already received a couple thousand trout for 2010.

LAKE SELMAC: trout, largemouth bass, bluegill, and crappieLake Selmac was stocked last week with 3,000 legal-sized trout. Some limits are being caught by anglers trolling wedding rings withworms. PowerBait, nightcrawlers and spinners have also been catch-ing fish. Fly anglers can be successful with wooly bugger flies. Fish-ing for largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, and other warmwatergamefish is really good, especially during the warmer weather. Theresort owners report that 9.5, 9, and 7.5 pound largemouth basshave been caught recently, with the bulk of the bass ranging in sizefrom 2-4 pounds. Pan fishing is excellent for crappies up to 1.5pounds. Warmwater fish are moving into the shallows.

LEMOLO RESERVOIR: rainbow trout, brown troutLemolo Reservoir opened for trout fishing April 24. There should besome hold over trophy trout from last year’s stocking plus over20,000 rainbow that were stocked last fall. The lake has also beenstocked recently with more rainbows. Lemolo also hosts some excel-lent spring-time brown trout fishing. Browns have recently beencaught on Tasmanian devils and castmasters while fishing near thebottom. There has been some recent reports of successful fishing forboth rainbows and browns. For additional information on access orfishing contact Lemolo Lake Resort at 541-634-6842.

LOON LAKE: rainbow trout, bassLoon Lake will start 2010 stockings in mid-March and the lake will re-ceive over 7,000 legal-sized trout by early June. The lake was alsostocked with some fingerlings last year that should be legal-sizednow. Loon Lake Resort is open, and the resort boat ramp also isopen. The BLM boat ramp will open May 20.

LOST CREEK RESERVOIR: rainbow trout, largemouth bass, small-mouth bassLost Creek Reservoir was stocked last week with 20,000 legal-sizedrainbow trout. Fishing has been good for bank anglers near Takelmaand boat anglers have been taking limits of fish up to 17 inches. Boatfishing seems to be the best near the dam and upstream of PeytonBridge. Wedding rings with worms, triple teasers, frisky flies, androoster tails have been catching fish. Bank anglers should try Power-Bait, worms and salmon eggs. Angling for largemouth and small-mouth bass is improving, especially during the warmer weather.

PACIFIC OCEAN AND BEACHES: bottomfish, greenlingWhen the ocean has been “calm” fishing for rockfish and lingcod hasbeen good. Fishing from shore for rockfish has been slow. A few ling-cod are still being caught near the rocky shorelines. Concentrateyour fishing near rocky outcroppings and drop-offs. Fishing for green-ling and cabezon has been good especially when fishing aroundrocky shorelines with some kelp growing near by. Sand shrimp is anexcellent bait to use.

PLAT I RESERVOIR: rainbow trout, warmwater game fishBass can be harvested from Mar. 1 to Oct. 31. Plat I was stockedwith 4,500 trout in 2009. Stocking in 2010 will begin in March. Todate nearly 4,000 trout have been stocked.

POWERS POND: rainbow trout, bluegills, largemouth bassFishing for stocked trout has been good. There are lots of aquaticvegetation growing in the pond making fishing a little tougher. Troutare biting on worms suspended under a bobber, small spinners, orflies. Fishing for bluegills has been good. There are lots of bluegillsnear shore but most of the keeper size bluegills are out in the pond alittle farther. Best fishing is in a small boat or float tube. Use smallflies or a piece of worm under a bobber. Largemouth bass are nearthe shorelines preparing to spawn. The fish are fairly spooky so becautious with your approach.

ROGUE RIVERRogue River, lower: spring chinook, summer steelheadNEW: Anglers can keep wild spring chinook below Gold Ray Dam onthe Rogue River. The lower Rogue River opened to the retention ofwild spring chinook on Saturday, May 22 – about 10 days earlier thannormal. Spring chinook fishing was fair to good for most boat andbank anglers. With the majority of spring chinook being wild this timeof year, anglers were pretty happy being able to keep the springersthey hooked this past weekend. Anglers are picking up fish primarilyon straight anchovies or an anchovy with a spinner blade in front ofit. Anglers may want to bring anchovies with them if they are headingto Gold Beach as they are in very short supply. Public bank access isreally good on the Lower Rogue from Quosatana Creek campgroundto the old Mill Site just above tidewater. Boat anglers can launch theirboats at the Port of Gold Beach, Lobster or Quosatana Creek camp-grounds.

Rogue River, middle: chinook salmon, steelheadSpring chinook angling in the Rogue River from Rainie Falls to GoldRay Dam is good. Fish are ranging in size from 12-25 pounds. Bestfishing is in the early morning until about 10:00 below Gold Ray Dam.Back-bouncing row and sardine-wrapped plugs have been producingfish. The flow at Grants Pass on May 25 was 2,490 cfs. As of May22, 2010, anglers are allowed to keep non-adipose fin clipped chi-nook as part of the daily 2 fish bag limit and the daily 5 jack limit inthe area between the mouth of the Rogue River and Gold Ray Dam.You must quit fishing for jacks after you have the 2 fish daily bag limitfor adults whether or not you have caught 5 jacks. The Rogue Riveropen to trout fishing.

Rogue River, upper: chinook salmon, steelheadBank anglers are doing well for spring chinook between the SlideHole and Cole Rivers Hatchery. As of May 20, a total of 14,255 win-ter steelhead and 6,709 spring chinook have been counted over GoldRay Dam. A 23-pound spring chinook was weighed in at Pat’s HandTied Flies last week. Most anglers are using corkies and red, orange,or green beads. Boat fishing should improve as more spring chinooksalmon reach the upper river. The salmon fly hatch is starting upnear Cole Rivers Hatchery. Excess adult spring chinook from ColeRivers Hatchery will be recycled this week at the Touvelle boat ramp. On May 25, the flow out of Lost Creek Reservoir was 1896 cfs, andthe flow at Gold Ray was 2,490 cfs. The river temperature was49.2oF at reservoir outflow.
