tradition that will never die. Send Valentine’s Day gifts from the luxury of your

bedroom.

Valentine’s Day is named after two different Roman saints, both called Valentine

and both utterly unconnected to romantic love. Legend has it that the original St.

Valentine was a priest who performed illegal marriages for the Emperor Claudius’

soldiers, the writings of Chaucer in 1382 first mention St. Valentine’s Day as a

romantic holiday. The medieval period ushered in a new focus on illicit but chaste

courtly love. Knights gave roses to their maidens and celebrated their beauty in

songs and loved pure and chaste from afar. However sugar was in short supply in

Europe, so there was no candy gifts exchange.

By 1840 the concept of Valentine’s Day as a holiday to celebrate had taken over

much of the English speaking world. It was the golden age of cupid- the god of

love. The Victorians celebrated the concept of courtly love and indulged in

romantic cards and gifts. Richard Cadbury popularized chocolate gifting. He

revolutionized the process of chocolate making, rendering it far more successful.

Many varieties of eating chocolate merged. Richard Cadbury recognized a great

marketing opportunity and began to sell his chocolates in beautifully decorated

boxes that he designed himself.

Images of cupid and roses adorned the popular chocolate boxes. It is widely

believed that Richard Cadbury was the first to produce the heart shaped box. The

box was reusable. When the chocolates had been eaten, the box was used to

store mementos and cards. Locks of hair to love letters were stored in the

beautiful boxes. The boxes were made exceedingly elaborate until the outbreak

of the world war when sugar was rationed and Valentine’s Day celebrations toned

down. Valentine Cadbury boxes still exist and are now collector’s items and

heirlooms.
