BUTTERFLY VALVES — 2”(DN50) thru 10”(DN250) SERIES 7700FP GROOVED END — 175 PSI (12,1 bar) GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Series 7700FP Grooved End But- terfly Valves (Ref.Figure A) are indicat- ing type valves designed for use in fire protection systems, where a visual in- dication is required as to whether the valve is open or closed. They are used, for example, as system, sectional, and pump water control valves. They have cut groove inlet and outlet connections which are suitable for use with grooved end pipe couplings that are listed or approved for fire protection system service. The Series 7700FP Butterfly Valves feature a spherical bore disc seat area which facilitates a constant disc to seat loading. This maintains a leaktight stem seal regardless of disc position (open to closed). Use of the spherical bore also enables the use of a narrow profile disc, with tapered leading edges, which provides minimal flow turbulence through the valve and re- duced friction loss. For applications requiring supervision of the open position of the valve, the Gear Operators for the Series 7700FP Butterfly Valves are available with two sets of factory installed internal switches each having SPDT contacts. The Gear Operator is also available without internal switches, in which case, the Gear Operator will accept direct attachment of a field installed external supervisory control valve switch, which has two sets of SPDT contacts. Information on the internal switches, as well as the externally mounted, Model PCVS-2 Supervisory Control Valve Switch, is given in the Technical Data section. APPROVALS AND STANDARDS The Series 7700FP Grooved End But- terfly Valves are listed and approved as indicated in Table A, as well as accepted by the City of New York under MEA 349-93-E. In addition, the Series 7700FP Valves with internal supervisory switches are listed by the California State Fire Mar- shal under Listing No. 7770-0090.104. The factory installed SPDT internal switches are listed by Underwriters Laboratories Inc.as “Supervisory Tam- per Switches” when the normally open contacts (for valve full open) are used for connection to the supervisory cir- cuit of an alarm control panel or indi- cating device. The Model PCVS-2 Supervisory Con- trol Valve Switch is listed by Underwrit- ers Laboratories Inc. and Underwrit- ers’ Laboratories of Canada. It is approved by the Factory Mutual Re- search Corporation. The listings and approval are under the name of Potter Electric Signal Company. WARNING The Series 7700FP Grooved End But- terfly Valves described herein must be installed and maintained in compli- ance with this document, as well as with the applicable standards of the National Fire Protection Association, in addition to the standards of any other authorities having jurisdiction. Failure to do so may impair the integ- rity of these devices. The owner is responsible for main- taining their fire protection system and devices in proper operating con- dition. The installing contractor or manufacturer should be contacted relative to any questions. Removing or disabling the tamper re- sistant fasteners used to secure either the cover of a Gear Operator with in- ternal switches or the cover of the Model PCVS-2 Supervisory Control Valve Switch will void the applicable listings and approval. TECHNICAL DATA Valve Assemblies: The 2 inch (DN50) thru 10 inch (DN250) Series 7700FP Grooved End Butterfly Valves are rated for a maxi- mum service pressure of 175 psi (12,1 bar). Inspection:It is recommended that fire protectionsystem water control valves be:

1. Chain locked in the fully-open posi-tion using the Handwheel.Locks andchains must be sturdy and resistant

to breakage except by heavy boltcutters.

2. Wire or strap sealed, if not locked, inthe fully-open position. Inquire withthe applicable insurance authorityfor their requirements as to the typeof seal.

3 Periodically (once a week for sealedvalves and once a month for locked

or electrically supervised valves),visually inspected with the followingitems checked:

• The valves are readily accessi-ble.

• The valves are in good conditionand do not leak.

• The valves are properly lockedor sealed in the full open posi-tion.

• The key to a locked valve is read-ily accessible to the individualsresponsible for sprinkler systemmaintenance, as well as watch-men.

4. The valve should also be physicallytried (i.e., completely closed andthen fully opened), if there are anydamaged parts, sign of tampering,or the position of the valve is ques-tionable.

Impaired valves must be immedi-ately replaced.

NOTES1.Contacts shown with valve full open.2.Wire leads are 18 AWG UL Style 1015 600V 105°C (CSA Type TEW).3.Wire leads extend about 18 inches (450 mm) beyond the conduit connection.4.The factory installed SPDT internal switches are listed by Underwriters Laboratories

Inc. as “Supervisory Tamper Switches” when the normally open contacts (for valvefull open) are used for connection to the supervisory circuit of an alarm control panelor indicating device.

5.The normally closed contacts (for valve full open) are only intended for use with closedloop supervisory circuits installed per NFPA standards earlier than the 1990 editionof NFPA 72.

6.CAUTION — When there are supervisory switches of the screw terminal typeconnected in parallel with the GG-4 and GG-8 internal supervisory switches, it is notacceptable for an uninsulated section of a single conductor to be looped around thescrew terminal to serve as two separate connections. The wire must be severed toserve as two separate connections, thereby providing supervision of the connectionat the screw terminal in the event that the wire becomes dislodged from under theterminal of the next supervisory switch.OBSOLE

MODEL PCVS-2 SUPERVISORY CONTROL VALVE SWITCH(Optional)

Install the PCVS-2 Switch onto theGG-4 Gear Operator as follows:

1. Partially close the GG-4 Gear Operator (at least4 turns from the full open position), and thenremove the Plug from the Gear Operator Cover.

2. Loosen the Set Screw that holds the Nipple ontothe PCVS assembly, and then remove the Nip-ple.

3. With the Locknut screwed over the Nipplethreads, hand tighten the Nipple into the GearOperator Cover, and then tighten the Locknutagainst the Cover to secure the Nipple firmly inplace.

4. Remove the Cover from the PCVS assembly, and then loosen/tighten the Trip Rod LockingScrew, as necessary, just to the point at whichthe Trip Rod can be either retracted or extendedwith some slight resistance.

5. Adjust the position of the Trip Rod so that ap-proximately 3" (75 mm) of the Trip Rod is ex-posed. Do not tighten the Trip Rod LockingScrew.

6. Slide the PCVS assembly as far as possibleover the Nipple while maintaining proper orien-tation of the PCVS assembly, as shown in theGG-4 Elevation View; and, then tighten the SetScrew that holds the PCVS assembly onto theNipple. (The Trip Rod will slide back into thePCVS assembly as it comes in contact with theGear Segment within the Gear Operator.)

7. Gently push the Switch Actuator as far as pos-sible towards the Switches and, while holding itin that position, securely tighten the Trip RodLocking Screw.

8. Attach leads from an electrical continuity meter,to the appropriate terminals.

9. Turn the Gear Operator to the full open position, and verify that the PCVS Switch contactschange position within two turns of the hand-wheel from the Valve being fully open.

10. Begin to close the Gear Operator.Verify that thePCVS Switch contacts change position withintwo turns of the handwheel from the Valve beingfully open.

11. Remove the electrical continuity test leads. Theexternal field wiring connections can now bemade to the PCVS Switch. Use of a weathertight elbow conduit connector with a gasket sealis recommended.

Install the PCVS-2 Switch onto the GG-8 Gear Operator as follows:

1. Partially close the GG-8 Gear Operator (at least 4 turns from the full open position), and then remove theappropriate Plug located at the side of the Gear Operator.

2. Remove the cover from the PCVS assembly, and then loosen the Trip Rod Locking Screw. Adjust theposition of the Trip Rod so that it extends about 1 inch (25 mm) beyond the Nipple, and then securelytighten the Trip Rod Locking Screw.

3. Loosen the Set Screw that holds the Nipple onto the PCVS assembly, and then remove the Nipple.4. With the Locknut screwed over the Nipple threads, hand tighten the Nipple into the Gear Operator, and

then tighten the Locknut against the Gear Operator to secure the Nipple firmly in place.5. Slide the PCVS assembly as far as possible over the Nipple while maintaining proper orientation of the

PCVS assembly, as shown in the GG-8 Elevation View, and then tighten the Set Screw that holds thePCVS assembly onto the Nipple

6. Attach leads from an electrical continuity meter, to the appropriate terminals.6. Turn the Gear Operator to the full open position, and verify that the PCVS Switch contacts change position

within two turns of the handwheel from the Valve being fully open.7. Begin to close the Gear Operator. Verify that the PCVS Switch contacts change position within two turns

of the handwheel from the Valve being fully open.9. Remove the electrical continuity test leads. The external field wiring connections can now be made to the

PCVS Switch. Use of a weather tight elbow conduit connector with a gasket seal is recommended.
