Three weeks into Preschool and the kids are deep into learning!
On Tuesday, September 30th, the Grade 2 and 3 classes went
for a field trip to the Pacific Biological Station. They learned
about the wide variety of species that live in our local ocean,
and learned about the work that is done at the Biological Sta-
tion.
Meet the Teacher Night
Thank you to everybody who came out to our Meet the Teach-
er night on September 18th. It was crazy full here, and it was
great to see so many parents and students come out. If you missed that evening, please feel free to contact
your child’s teacher by phone, or pop in before or after school. Our teachers are always happy to meet with
parents.
Qwam Qwum Parent Advisory Council Meeting October 29th
The first meeting of our QQS PAC will be held on October 29th from 4:30-5:30. We are hoping to have shorter
more frequent meetings. During that first meeting (light refreshment and daycare provided) it would be great
to have a discussion about schedule times that work for our parents and staff (and set some upcoming
meetings), and begin to look at our purpose for meeting. We will always have at least one staff member at the
meetings, and ALL parents are welcome.

The Great British Columbia Shake Out—October 16
Drop, Cover, and Hold On!
PROTECT YOURSELF. SPREAD THE WORD.
Official rescue teams who have been dispatched to the scene of earthquakes and other dis-
asters around the world continue to advocate use of the internationally recognized "Drop,
Cover and Hold On" protocol to protect lives during earthquakes:
1. DROP to the ground (before the earthquake drops you!),
2. Take COVER by getting under a sturdy desk or table, and
3. HOLD ON to it until the shaking stops.
If there isn’t a table or desk near you, drop to the ground in an inside corner of the building
and cover your head and neck with your hands and arms. Do not try to run to another room
just to get under a table.
SFN is a registered participant and will be doing the drill in all offices and schools.

Community Building Project Update
On June 20, 2014, we broke ground for our beautiful new building – a
moment that marked a turning point towards an even stronger future for
our people.
This month, the workers prepared the site for the building and large boulders were stacked on the shore-
line to protect it from washing away and wearing down. This is a long-term investment in the future of the
land in front of the community building and the cemetery.
You will see the project team busy at work all winter long and construction is expected to be complete by
late summer 2015.
The building will include a gymnasium and fitness room, multi-purpose room, the Tuytaxun General Store
and a commercial kitchen. It will be a place for all of our community members to gather and come together
for special events and activities.

Your Employment Department is working for you!
Your Employment Counselor is working hard with local businesses to help SFN members get permanent and
temporary employment.
The New Hires for HD Tree Services are Billy V, Billy G, Chris B, and Cliff T.
All the guys had big smiles and report that they are happy and enjoying a good day’s work for HD Tree Ser-
vices.
Three other members have been hired on at Coastland.
And two members had short term full time contracted Security Work.
Shea Point comments, “I started at Coastland at the beginning of Au-
gust. I love it and feel lucky to be working at a career. What helped
me get to Coastland was the right up in the SFN Newsletter and I
came down to the office to see Becky-Lou she helped me big time.”
“She helped me with my resume, Coastland application, references,
preparing for the interview and mostly the confidence to get through
the interview. It was great and put me at ease that Becky-Lou was
there through the whole process to support me, I absolutely recom-
mend anyone looking for work to go down to the band office and see
Becky-Lou in the Employment Dept.”
Lloyd Good added, “I am so happy to be working, I am giving it my best!”
“It is awesome that I was able to receive support from the Band Office Em-
ployment Department to get me where I wanted to be. I have wanted to
work for Coastland for a long time, and finally was able to navigate the pro-
cess with support for successful employment”.
Congratulations to everyone!

Wood Burning Stove Safety Tips Be sure to follow the manufacturers' directions and the local building codes for proper installation, use, and maintenance of your wood-burning stove. Always start your fire using paper and small pieces of kindling. Never use accelerants to start a fire. Things can get out of hand in a hurry! Be sure that any combustible surface is kept well clear of the wood burning stove – an example would be a couch or chair that is placed too close. Burn only well-seasoned wood. Green or unseasoned wood burns cooler than well-seasoned wood, and can cause creosote to build up at a much faster rate. Do not burn driftwood as it’s laden with salt and will corrode the linings of your pipes. Be sure to clean the ashes out of your wood-burning stove on a regular basis. Store the ashes in a covered metal container. Hot coals in discarded ashes can easily ignite grass, leaves, and trees if left uncovered. Keep the ash container at a safe distance away from the house and any other nearby buildings. Smoke Detectors and Fire Extinguishers
Change the batteries and test each smoke detector unit regularly. If for some reason you have disconnected a smoke detector, hook it back up. This precaution SAVES LIVES! Smoke detectors can be purchased at most hard-ware, home building, and a variety of retail stores. This is a very inexpensive way to protect you and your family. Keep a fire extinguisher handy, and make sure that everyone in your household knows how to use it. Keep your fire extinguisher well maintained. If it does not work, it won't do you any good! Summary of Tips Have your chimney inspected and cleaned by a certified, insured Chimney Sweep.
Never start a fire using an accelerant. Burn only dry, well-seasoned wood.
Clean out the ashes regularly. Store the ashes in a covered metal container at a safe distance from your house.
Be sure your smoke detectors are in proper working order. Keep a fire extinguisher handy.
Make sure your fire extinguisher is well maintained and that every household member knows how to use it.

Rodent Control Pests and rodents at this time of year are looking for places to nest – please keep your home free of clutter and free from deer carcasses or fish remains. If there’s a food source left out and places to hide they will stay at your home and have a wonderful time.
By taking fish remains back to the ocean and carcass remains back into the forest, you are helping the community con-trol unwanted rodents, stop dogs from getting into people’s garbage and keeping unwanted odors away. Thank you for your cooperation!
Portable Heaters Use electric portable heaters only in the room you are occupying and NEVER leave them unattended.
Tip: Electric portable heaters are normally 1500 watts.
If a heater operates continuously this could increase your bill as much as 70% or an additional $75.00 to $85.00 dollars per month.
Please turn it down or turn it off.
Thank You for your Cooperation!
Did you know this about bed-bugs?
Bed bugs can move from home to home very quickly.
Unfortunately many travel through USED furniture. They can also travel through luggage and
clothing.
This bug is by far the hardest to get rid of.
Full cooperation from the tenant/home owner with the SFN professional service provider (B.C. Bed-bug Expert)
will be the only way to get rid of this bug.
If a home has bed-bugs it has to be super-heated to approximately 135 degrees Fahrenheit. Sprays or insecti-
cides do not work; heat is the only way to eliminate this bug.
On average, it costs SFN Housing $1000.00 to $1,500.00 for one (1) heat treatment.
Please contact the Housing Department at 250-740-2300, if you suspect that you have bed bugs.
