BIOGAS FOR OMNIEXPRESS

V andea, France. Here is presently being tested a Scania OmniExpress 320 fueled by biogas. The biogas is locally ge-

nerated by ten farmers at four farms. They have produced biogas since April 2014, which is injected into the gas network of the city of Mortagne-sur-Sevre. “With its large population and economic growth, Vendée is consuming more and more energy,” said Yves Auvinet, President of the Vendée County Council. “This test is part of our action plan to substantially increase local energy production.” Initially the bus will be used on a 30-kilometre school route and then it will enter service on a regular 200-kilometre line. The bus can board 55 seated passengers and a wheelchair. It carries eight 150-litre gas tanks, which is sufficient for a 500 kilometre journey.•

TEMSA WINS IN LITHUANIA

THE official premiere of the first Volvo’s electric bus in Gothenburg, Sweden, is scheduled

for June 15. The vehicle will debut on route 55 that will be served by three all-electric buses and seven electric hybrids, all from Volvo Buses. The buses are equipped with battery packs quickly charged with renewable elec-

tricity at the end terminals. Energy consumption is about 80 per cent lower than that of corre-sponding diesel buses. The new route is the result of “ElectriCity”, a cooperative venture which develops, demonstrates and evaluates innovative solutions for future sustainable public transport. Volvo’s electric bus is 10.7 metres long and can carry up to 86 passengers. It features electrical power sockets to recharge passengers’ mobile phones and onboard Wi-Fi. The central driver’s seat contributes to high passenger capacity. Series production of all-electric Volvo buses is sche-duled for 2017. •

THE ELECTRIC VOLVO FOR GÖTHENBURG

L ithuanian transport company UAB Kautra put into service five Temsa HD 12 coaches. The vehicles are powered by

a new generation Euro VI engine. This model is 12.27 metres long and 3.6 high. The seating capacity is up to 55 passengers (59 on the 13 metres version) while luggage capacity is up to 9m3 (11m3 on the longer version). The engine is the DAF MX 11 Euro VI (320 or 430 hp). Additional features include

wheelchair lift, kitchen, WC, audio and video systems. UAB Kautra is a loyal customer of Temsa since 2003 with 120 Temsa coaches in operation. •

BusToCoach on-line Magazine - June 2015 FLASH NEWS

S chlienz Tours GmbH & Co. KG from Kernen near Stuttgart is investing four million euros in the expansion and modernisa-

tion of its current fleet, the largest sum to be invested since the company was established in 1932. German operator took delivery of three touring coaches of the Setra and Mercedes-Benz brands.

The handover ceremony took place at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart for an S 516 HDH of the Setra TopClass 500 series, a two-axle Mercedes-Benz Travego and a three-axle Travego M. The Travego accommodates 42 passengers on comfortable LuxLine touring se-ats, while the Travego M offers 48 such seats. Passengers on board the S 516 HDH benefit from plenty of room for their legs and arms and the TopSky panoramic glass roof. The Setra TopClass 500 vehicle features exclusive 2+1 seating. This means three instead of four seats in a row. All three vehicles from Daimler’s present bus range have the most cutting-edge safety systems currently available in the industry on board. These include the Lane Assistant (SPA), adaptive cruise control (ART) with emergency braking assist and Attention Assist (AtAs) Additional vehicles will follow in the fleet Schlienz Tours. •

THEY LIKE SOLARIS IN LATVIA

ON April 28, took place in Liepāja, Latvia, the official presentation of the first 30 Solaris low-floor Urbinos

12 of the 43 ordered at the beginning of 2015. All the buses are powered by an Euro 6 Cummins ISB 6.7 engine matched to a Voith Diwa 6 transmission. The vehicles are featured with air-conditioning as well as double-glazed windows installed as standard to protect passengers from severe seaside climate. Part of the buses are fitted with passenger counting systems. Latvia is a great market for Solaris Bus & Coach with 333 vehicles operating there in total. Recently the Polish manufacturer started the production of 300 units for the capital city of Riga (125 diesel buses and 175 trolleybuses, the latter in cooperation with Škoda Electric). Last year Solaris delivered 25 Trollinos 18 along with 35 articulated Urbino 18. •

VOLVO’S RECORD SALES IN SWEDEN

S cania’s transmission components plant in Tucumán, Argentina, has increased its exports to Europe by

600 percent. Here Scania produces a wide range of tran-smission components including pinions, crowns, shafts and synchronized gears for use in Scania vehicles. The result comes as the Tucumán plant prepares to celebrate 40 years of operation in 2016. Over the past two years the Swedish manufacturer invested USD 43 million in the plant with the aim of significantly increasing efficiency and boosting the plant’s potential production output. That effort is now yielding results. “Thanks to the changes and to the modernisation initiatives that we imple-mented, we have gone from exporting five percent of our production volume to Europe two years ago to 35 percent today”, Adolpho Bastos, Managing Director of the Tucumán plant, said. The remaining 65 percent of output goes to Scania Latin America’s production unit in São Bernardo do Campo, Brazil. •

FROM ARGENTINA TO EUROPE

N obina has ordered 267 Volvo buses to be delivered on the Swedish market in 2015. This is the largest order to date

for Volvo Buses in Sweden. All the vehicles are the low-entry Volvo 8900 model powered by Volvo’s 8-litre biodiesel Euro 6 engine (320 hp). The order includes 70 two-axle and 206 three-axle buses in lengths from 12 to 14.8 m. The specifica-tions are different to suit the local requirements. The buses for the region of Värmland will be dedicated to regional service with a high level of comfort while the buses for Stockholm will be used primarily in suburban operations with the focus on high capacity. First deliveries are scheduled next June. •

SPEED RECORD AT MILLBROOK

BusToCoach on-line Magazine - June 2015 FLASH NEWS

THE Swiss coach operator Brunner Ferienreisen has taken delivery of two three-axle Setra S 515 HDH

coaches. The vehicles are fitted with large Setra TopSky glass roof, panoramic cameras and 46 comfortable Setra Voyage Am-bassador touring seats. In addition, they feature the sector’s latest safety and convenience systems such as the Adaptive cruise con-trol with emergency braking assist system (ABA2), Attention As-sist (ATAS), Predictive Powertrain Control (PPC). Another coach

operator has chosen the Setra technology. It’s König’s Reisen from Wirges, Germany. The company has taken delivery of the world’s first touring coach from the Setra TopClass 500 series featuring exclusive 2+ seating. The S 516 HDH provides passengers with plenty of room with 29 touring seats as well as a glass roof. It’s a 5-star luxury coach featured with Setra Ambassador touring seats with extra-wide seat cushions and ergonomically shaped seat backrest shells in fine leather. •

MICRO HYBRIDWRIGHTBUS

UK bus operator Docherty’s Midland Coaches has taken delivery of a StreetLite from Wrightbus, the third of its

existing two vehicles over the last few years. The new vehicle is 9.5 metres in length and is powered by a 160ps Cummins engine with a four speed Voith gearbox. Internally it has 37 seats, is fully seatbelted and has a CCTV system installed. A key factor in Docherty’s decision making was the inclusion of Micro Hybrid technology on the vehicle, which was designed and developed by Wrightbus to capture excess energy generated from the bus’s braking system. The energy is redistributed to fuel the pneumatics, hydraulic and electrical systems which would otherwise require additional power from the engine. “The Micro Hybrid system offers us a potential 10% reduction in fuel consumption and savings on an anticipated 15 year operational service life and and this therefore played an important part in our selection this new StreetLite for our fleet”, said Neil Docherty, Managing Director for Docherty’s. •

SETRA IN GERMANY AND MORE

A gas powered bus set new world record in a test which took place at Milbrook’s proving ground

in Bedfordshire, UK. The bus set a speed record at 76.785mph and reached a top speed of 80.78mph. Nor-mally speed limited to 56mph, the bus was painted

black and white like a Friesian cow because it runs on bio methane Compressed Natural Gas produced from cow manure. Its fuel is made from animal waste which is broken down in a process called anaerobic digestion to produce biogas, which is then liquefied and sto-red in seven tanks fixed inside the roof of the bus. The record bus was back in service the following day in Reading, a town in Bedfordshire. •

Registrations of buses over 3.5 tons rise by 17.1% within the borders of the European Union. Improvement are marked in Spain, Italy and the UK

Good news concerning the bus market comes from Europe. In the first quarter

of 2015, there is a significant increase in registrations of vehicles over 3.5 tons. Ac-cording to the periodic surveys of the Eu-ropean Automobile Manufacturers’ Asso-ciation (ACEA), registered buses between January and April amounted to 12,175 against 10,398 reported for the first four months of 2014. Thus, we can see a 17.1% increase. The increase involves the majority of the

27 European states of the EU.Among the main EU markets stand out Spain, Italy and the United Kingdom. The Iberian market is the one with the highest performance, growing 74.2% with 939 registered buses to 539 ones in the first quarter of 2014.More limited but still noteworthy the per-formance of Italian market that totalled 1,017 units against 799, marking an incre-ase of 27.3%.The market is developing well in the UK,

The new model of the Iberian manufacturer received the Red Dot Award which is considered the International Oscar for design and product innovation

C astrosua group (Harsha, Insular, Cidsa) is among the winners of the Red Dot

Award, a prestigious award created in 1955 by “Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen” with the aim to recognise the quality and in-novation of de-signers and ma-nufacturers in the creation of new household and professio-nal products. This year 4,928 proposals came from 56 coun-tries.The Iber ian manufacturer has won the ‘Oscar’ for de-sign and pro-duct innovation thanks to the New City model, a Castrosua’s new proposal for city transport.Safety, functionality and comfort are the priorities of the designers in the develop-ment of the vehicle which is characterized by the front and rear LED lights whose C-shape is the symbol of the brand’s identity.

The windshield, with its surrounding desi-gn, improves the driver’s visibility alongside with the ergonomics of the vehicle’s cockpit that provides optimal working conditions for the driver.

This model in-cludes impro-vements in its active safety system, such as an optical and acoustic signal fo r mov ing doors and re-tro illuminated pushbu t tons , among others. The New City can be mounted on any chassis, either with die-

sel or CNG propulsion and lengths ranging between 10.5 and 18 meters. The New City, which was launched a few months ago, already has 15 units operating in Gijón and Vigo, northwestern cities of Spain. The award ceremony of the Red Dot Awa-rd’s winners will take place on June 29 in Essen, Germany. •

tic standards derived from the Citaro but the possible customizations are countless (design packages Metro or Tram) with dif-ferent side and roof panels, colored ceilin-gs and much more.In terms of environmentally friendly en-gines, will debut at the UITP the M 936 G powered by biogas that will be applied for Mercedes Citaro NGT starting from the next autumn. The new 7.7-litre engine has an output of 222 kW (302 hp) while delivering maximum torque of 1,200 Nm at 1,200-1,600 rpm. It was derived from the diesel version, keeping only a mono-block unit and a four valve cylinder head, adapting the Otto cycle internal combu-stion with stoichiometric air-gas mixture ratio (Lambda = 1), the most suitable to ensure low emissions and high perfor-mance. The Euro VI limits are obtained through the recirculation system of cooled exhaust gas and a three-way catalyst. The CO2 Life Cycle Assessment has been im-proved by more than 20 percent compared to that of a diesel engine. Using biogas to power the engine makes driving almost CO2 neutral. In this regard, Daimler Buses sees further scope for optimization: gas engines along-side with the diesel drive. More generally, the future propulsion scenario implies the equal importance of both, with the further improvement of diesel engines and electri-fication systems attaining the future mo-dels of all-electric Citaro E-CELL and the

fuel cell-powered Citaro F-CELL, which will be implemented by 2020, based on a modular platform. It may seem a rather long time, but ac-cording to Daimler, nowadays the degree of technological maturity and the cost of electric drive are not yet able to replace the diesel engine entirely. Range, passen-ger capacity and costs have not yet reached the levels of vehicles fueled by diesel. And this is stated on the basis of experience lasting for decades in the testing and deve-

lopment of each type of propulsion.A separate discussion on the hybrid drive is seen not as an intermediate step toward the electrification but as a support system for greater efficiency of diesel engines. So, the Daimler’s solution is a Compact Hybrid optimized in terms of cost that is able to recoup the initial investment in a few years. At the UITP, Daimler will also present its platform of innovative mobility services by means of its moovel subsidiary GmbH,

Iveco has supplied to AMSA (Milan Environ-mental Services Company), namely 18 Euro-cargo road sweepers and seven Stralis Hi-Way trucks which will be used in areas around the Expo site. For the passenger transport sector Iveco bus has delivered to the Expo seven Urbanway buses powered by compressed natural gas (CNG). The vehicles are used by Arriva Ita-

organic fraction of waste. For Iveco and Iveco bus biomethane is a significant technological challenge due to its effectiveness in reducing CO2 emissions and its ability to satisfy the technological requirements set out by the Eu-ropean Union.”The field of biogas was discussed at Expo on May 9 at the round table event organized by CNH Industrial and the Italian Consortium for Biogas (CIB). Oscar Baroncelli, product ma-nager of FPT Industrial, joined the round ta-ble discussion and made his contribution to it. “With 25 years of experience and more than 25,000 CNG engines sold, FPT Industrial has the broadest engine range available on the market. The present possible technologies that can be adopted for the development of CNG mainly include: stoichiometric combustion, lean burn or dual-fuel CNG diesel. Since the beginning, FPT has chosen stoichiometric combustion, the only viable and cost-effec-tive solution available today that meets Euro VI emission levels. “ •
