Banco Sabadell is a financial institution that has been bucking the economic slump. It’s the fourth largest banking group in Spain, with over 2,300 branches and more than 17,000 employees. While other banks have been cutting services and closing branches, Banco Sabadell has been evolving, acquiring other companies and investing in growth.

However, while this growth was positive for the company, the bank’s prolifer-ating IT infrastructure - exacerbated by the introduction of new acquisitions - was becoming cumbersome. A number of different vendors were responsi-ble for the management and operation of the bank’s infrastructure, resulting in a mix match of technology and services. This set-up was counter-productive for an organisation that wanted to integrate new mergers and expand.

What the bank wanted was a simplified management and operation solu-tion, that would allow it to introduce a virtualised model to both the front and back offices.

“Banco Sabadell has been a key player in

the transformation of the Spanish nan-

cial market.”

The Solution

Banco Sabadell wanted a vendor that could provide it with end-to-end man-agement and operation for all of its systems, and chose HP to be its technol-ogy partner.

In September 2010, the two companies embarked on a new project - titled Orion Project 1 - that focussed on consolidating the management and opera-tion of Banco Sabadell’s intermediate systems, laying the foundations for a virtualised workplace.

After Banco Sabadell acquired the savings bank Caja Mediterráneo in De-cember 2011, it began the second phase of the project - Orion 2 - in order to manage the technical impact of the merger.

“This demanding way of working has

made us much better. We have done

amazing things and worked on amazing

projects.”

The Outcome

The evolution of Banco Sabadell’s technology infrastructure has transformed the way its branches operate too. They have become virtualised environments, operating without PCs or servers, where user desktops and print functions are managed centrally from the data centre. This means that, no matter what the user profile is or the banking device, all access to desktop and virtualised sys-tems is done through thin clients.

This solution helped to simplify and unify the management model and, ulti-mately, increased security as users were able to remotely access their desktop without having to store data locally. This has enabled the bank to roll-out an initiative whereby its sales managers can access the bank’s system, using HP’s new ElitePad tablet, from any location in a flexible, secure and personalised way.

Banco Sabadell wanted to transform its technology investment, shifting from a CAPEX to an OPEX model and adopting a a pay-for-use system for ICT assets and services. HP facilitated this by transitioning the bank towards a private cloud architecture, virtualising all the intermediate platforms, including those that support critical processes.
