ACHIEVEMENT

AVENG GRINAKER-LTA SCOOPS INNOVATION AWARD AT FULTON AWARDS

Aveng Grinaker-LTA was a joint winner, together with Lafarge South Africa and the University of Pretoria, in the annual Fulton Awards in the ‘Innovation in Concrete’ category for its work on the Van Zyl Spruit Bridge project on the N1 Freeway between Trompsburg interchange and Fonteintjie.

The unique Van Zyl Spruit Bridge is the first long integral bridge in South Africa and, at 90 metres, is one of the longest integral bridges in the world. The innovative use of integral bridges allows for savings in materials, no capital costs for bearings and joints, lower maintenance costs, more durability and, importantly, makes concrete bridges more competitive.

In addition, the installation of over 500 sensors in the bridge structure, which are being logged automatically every 15 minutes to detect and quantify trends in strain, temperature, tilt and earth pressure, make this one of the first ‘smart’ bridges in the country. The data obtained from these sensors will contribute to a better understanding of environmental loading and performance of integral bridges in South Africa and hopefully encourage more widespread use of integral bridges.

The Fulton Awards, held every two years by the Concrete Society of Southern Africa, recognises and honours excellence and innovation in the design and use of concrete. The awards continue to celebrate the legacy of scientific and technological advances in concrete within the built environment, as well as the late Dr Sandy Fulton’s life and achievements in the industry.

AVENG MANUFACTURING HOSTS EMPLOYEE ROUNDTABLE

On 26 June, Aveng Manufacturing hosted a roundtable session at the Aveng Park Conference Centre. The session was attended by Solly Letsoalo, Managing Director for Aveng Manufacturing, together with Aveng Manufacturing’s business unit managing directors and 30 employees from across the five business units. The session provided a platform for employees to express their opinions and thoughts on diverse issues, and helped to increase visibility of management and improve the communication process between management and employees.

The engagement sessions were interactive, and employees and management discussed more efficient ways of working across the operating group as well as key strategic objectives to be pursued in the short, medium and long term.

“The roundtable was beneficial as it provided an opportunity for employees and management to engage with each other in an open forum. Our teams are now well informed about our strategy and their role in meeting our strategic objectives. We will continue to host similar sessions in the future and we encourage employee participation and engagement at these sessions,” said Solly.

McCONNELL DOWELL EMPLOYEE LAUDED AS ONE OF AUSTRALIA’S ‘MOST INNOVATIVE ENGINEERS’

AVENG INFRASET TEAM RECOGNISED FOR COMMITMENT TO SAFETY

AVENG ACS TEAM MEMBERS TAKE SAFETY SERIOUSLY

Earlier this week, McConnell Dowell Engineering Manager in Australia, Vito Trantino, was named one of Australia’s ‘most innovative engineers’ for 2017. Vito heads up the McConnell Dowell team of design managers who oversee McConnell Dowell’s engineering consultants during the bidding and delivery phases of its design and construct projects. He also heads up the temporary works team who develop innovative, customised engineering solutions that help streamline their construction delivery.

More than 200 engineers were considered for inclusion on the prestigious list, with the winners selected by a panel of judges including leading professionals in business and academia.

Engineers Australia National President, John McIntosh, congratulated all the winners.

“Australian engineers are respected worldwide both for our ingenuity and persistence in making our solutions work,” he said. “We are the home, after all, of world famous inventions such as WiFi and the black box flight recorder.”

Innovative engineering has always been part of McConnell Dowell’s DNA and this nomination is a strong endorsement of Vito’s engineering leadership and recognition of McConnell Dowell’s ‘Creative Construction’ brand.

The Aveng Infraset team based in Matsapha, Swaziland, was acknowledged at the Government of Swaziland’s World Day for Safety and Health at Work commemoration on 29 May, for their commitment to maintaining safety, health and environmental requirements.

At the event, held at the Matsapha Municipality and attended by senior government officials and a representative from the World Health Organisation, the Minister for Labour and Social Security, the Honourable Winnie Magagula, awarded the Aveng Infraset team with a certificate in recognition of safety compliance at their Swaziland factory.

Aveng Infraset is committed to maintaining safety standards through hazard identification prior to any activity on site. The company adopts a proactive approach, together with management involvement and an open two-way communication process, to minimise any potential safety risk.

“Congratulations to the team on this proud achievement. I commend you for your commitment to ensuring zero-harm. Keep up the excellent work. We are proud of you,” says Mthunzi Masina, Safety Coordinator at Aveng Infraset.

Noel Smuts and Ayanda Ndlela, from Aveng ACS’s Instrument Valve Services (IVS) business unit, recently attended a highly ascribed and internationally accredited safety course and obtained certification for dealing with matters pertaining to hazardous locations.

A hazardous location is considered any location where there may be significant risk of igniting gas, dust, mist or vapour. The course is a requirement to satisfy customer needs, maintain safety standards and an imperative for the future growth of individuals and the Aveng ACS IVS department.

The intensive training programme spans over four days and thoroughly examines the concept of hazardous locations with a focus on identifying zone classifications, equipment protection techniques and performing inspections according to recognised safety standards.

After completing the course, both Noel and Ayanda said that they thoroughly enjoyed the training. “It was well facilitated and worth the time and effort,” they said.

UP-CLOSE AND PERSONAL

AVENG ACS INVESTS IN SKILLS DEVELOPMENT GETTING TO KNOW PAUL STANDER

Annelise Smith joined Aveng ACS on 1 June 2017 in the Sales Support Division, reporting to Kim Goncalves as an intern for a 12-month period. Annelise was one of the learners Aveng ACS sponsored in 2016 on the business administration skills learnership, and has joined the company to gain relevant work experience.

We welcome Annelise to the Aveng ACS team.

Paul Stander first became associated with Aveng in 2010 as a bursary student. Today this inspiring young man is a junior site engineer with Aveng Grinaker-LTA’s Civil Engineering business unit and is based at the N1 Ventersburg Project. His duties include the management of subcontractors, construction of concrete side drains, construction of kerbing, checking and signing invoices for plant used on site and submitting a daily site diary to the engineer. Before this position, Paul was a junior civil engineer for the tender department and the head office, responsible for planning, designing, and overseeing construction and maintenance of building structures.

Paul describes Aveng as a caring company, committed to the training and development of youth.

He is open to change, able to adapt easily to different situations and believes that it is important to ask questions rather than to make mistakes.

“The qualities needed for a successful career are respect, honesty, passion, integrity and commitment,” says Paul.

Paul’s approach to his job is to listen carefully and to learn a new skill each day. These inherent qualities have been instrumental in his success at Aveng. His proud professional achievement is being selected as a bursary recipient and later proving his worth and being offered a permanent position at Aveng.

Other notable achievements are being an associate member at the South African Institution of Civil Engineering and a candidate engineer at the Engineering Council of South Africa. Paul attributes his success to several of his colleagues who have had a big influence.

His future aspirations are to build a legacy for our country and be part of a team that makes a significant improvement to infrastructure development.

In his spare time, he enjoys watching rugby and is a loyal Blue Bulls supporter.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

AVENG GRINAKER-LTA HELPS TO CLEAN KNYSNA HOSPITAL AFTER RAMPANT FIRE

The Knysna Provincial Hospital was among the very many structures that were engulfed in flames as raging wildfires spread through the Knysna region last month.

The regional Aveng Grinaker-LTA team, together with 40 cleaners from JC Joubert Construction, came together on 13 June to clean the hospital after the blaze left the hospital covered in ash and smelling of smoke. The task was huge and included cleaning windows, blinds, walls, ceilings, beds, chairs, floors, staircases and even medicine bottles in the pharmacy.

Ernie Sampson, Senior Quantity Surveyor at Aveng Grinaker-LTA, who managed the project said: “Thank you to the team at JC Joubert Construction for your hard work and commitment to ensuring that the fine ash and dust was removed from the hospital. We appreciate your efforts.”

FAST FACT

TIPS TO REMAIN FOCUSED AND HEALTHY AT WORK

CALLING ALL ACHIEVERS

We are all trying to achieve a work-life balance, juggling careers with family, friends and hobbies but how much balance do you strike between the hours of nine to five?

July 1–5 was Corporate Wellness Week in South Africa. It’s a week that puts the spotlight on wellness in the workplace and identifies the pitfalls and productivity levels of an “all work and no play” attitude in the office. If eating your lunch at your desk while furiously trying to type up a document between bites is a regular occurrence for you, then perhaps it’s time to break a few bad habits.

Here are some top tips to squeeze in some exercise at the workplace and let your increased serotonin levels absorb some of those little stresses that pop up in your inbox:

• Even a small amount of exercise each day is enough to boost your energy and lower your risk of serious health problems such as heart disease and stroke. Start by parking your car further away from the office, taking the stairs instead of the elevator and deliberately using a bathroom on another floor.

• Set an alarm to go off every hour to remind you to stand up and move around. Even if you just swing your arms or take a deep breath, you’ll feel more alert.

• Deliver documents or messages to co-workers in person rather than by email or phone.

• Set up short walks during lunch whenever your deadlines allow for it. Before you know it you’ll have a few colleagues joining you for a quick power walking session

• Set up outdoor meetings and brainstorm sessions and enjoy the benefits of fresh air and sunshine

• Eating a healthy lunch full of the right nutrients goes a long way, and remember that adding short sessions of exercise throughout the day will help you burn more calories and reduce stress.
