MONEY MATTERS
Do you qualifyfor this credit?
By Harvey Amwake, C.P.A.
The 2010 health care reform legisla-tion established a tax credit to encouragesmall businesses to provide health insur-ance for employees. Recent surveys haveshown that the majority of small compa-nies that might qualify for the credithave failed to take it. The reasons givenfor ignoring the credit ranged from beingunaware of it to finding the credit toocomplicated to compute.
If your business or nonprofit orga-nization might be eligible, perhaps youshould take another look at the require-ments and be sure you’re taking advan-tage of this tax break.
If you qualify, you can use this taxcredit to offset your federal income taxliability by up to 35 percent of the costof health insurance premiums you payfor employees. Since this is a tax credit, not a deduction, it will reduce your taxbill dollar-for-dollar.
In general, the credit is available toemployers that have fewer than 25 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees pay-ing average annual wages of less than$50,000 per employee. Eligibility isbased partially on FTEs, not the num-ber of employees; therefore, an employ-er with fewer than 50 half-time workerscould qualify for the credit.
Tax-exempt organizations can usethe credit to offset payroll tax liability(up to 25 percent of qualified premi-ums paid).
For assistance in determining eligi-bility for this tax credit and in doing thecalculations to obtain the credit, talk toyour financial adviser or contact ouroffice. If you qualified but did not takethe credit in prior years, filing an amend-ed tax return may be a good idea. This article is for general information only anddoes not constitute financial advice. If you haveany questions about financial matters, consult aprofessional tax adviser. More than 26 years ago, life-long North Centralresident Master David Karstadt had a vision ofcreating a martial arts school where Valley resi-dents could not only strengthen themselves physi-cally but also develop themselves mentally. In May1986, this seventh-degree black belt fulfilled thatdream by opening Arizona Kicks. Since then, ithas become one of the longest running and mostsuccessful Taekwon-Do schools in the Valley, withKarstadt training five World Champions as coachof the U.S. Taekwon-Do Team.Karstadt has created a school community where
members get in great shape by learning to punch, kick and defend themselves in the tradition of theInternational Taekwon-Do Federation. Studentsalso learn character development and leadershipskills. “A Black Belt is more than being able todefend yourself,” Karstadt says. “It’s about being aleader and someone who makes a difference inyour family and your community.”He has modeled that spirit for his students
through his fundraising work for PhoenixChildren’s Hospital, Fresh Start Women’s Centerand the Desert Mission Food Bank via his annual“Kick-A-Thon,” which feeds more than 100 fami-lies each year at Thanksgiving. Karstadt also hasbeen featured on Sonoran Living, EVB Live andPhoenix Suns Halftime shows, to name a few.Arizona Kicks is located at 531 E. Bethany Home

If the person who is attempting topurchase your valuables does not weighthem, and test the karat purity in front ofyou – say thank you and leave.
If you call a potential buyer over thephone and ask "HOWMUCH DO YOU PAYPER GRAM?" and get a run around without adefinite answer – say thank you and hang up.
