Thought for the Day
“Every company will be going out and empower
their workers with a certain set of tools. The big
difference in how much value is received from
that will be how much the company steps back
and really thinks through their business
processes."
Bill Gates

Today’s Discussion
• Chicken and the egg problem
• Business processes and systems
• Re-engineering
Chicken And The Egg Problem
• Bad systems or bad processes?
• Usually both
• Priorities
– People
– Process
– Technology (system)
• Culture will eat technology for lunch
• Automating a mess creates junk faster
• Undefined process makes people mad
6
Business Processes And Systems
• Legacy systems have “defined”
people’s jobs
• This is the way we do it
• What is the goal?
– Implement new software?
– Improve business processes?
– Reduce labor, time, costs?
7
The Challenge
• Unless users are actively engaged in the process documentation / improvement, they will revert back to the old ways
• Users must realize their “jobs” will change
• Increase probability of success by listening to end users, especially current workarounds
8
Re-engineering
Business process re-
engineering (BPR) began as
a way to help organizations
fundamentally rethink how
they do their work in order to
dramatically improve
customer service, cut
operational costs, and
become world-class
competitors.
9
What Usually Happens….
10
“..getting our business processes mapped was
rewarding, with many “aha” moments. The fear
was quickly replaced by the positive realization
that it would make everyone’s jobs easier and the
company more profitable: providing greater job
security for everyone.”
Risks and Red Flags
• Refusal to change any current processes
• Introducing too many changes
• Unrealistic business process designs
• End Users not involved
11
Key to Success
• Deep discussions on feasible
business processes
• Clear definition of successful
project
• Avoid analysis paralysis
• Define and improve - quickly
12
Things to Remember….
• Savings are realized by process improvement, not implementing new software
• Improvements are made by the people, not the software tool
• Reverting back to the way we used to do it results in cumbersome processes, messed up systems, and usually higher costs
