Jesse Bergland “Goldilocks, James, and Baby Bear Battle the Space Alien Smots” is the new book by Jim Daughton of Eden Prairie. Daughton re- sponded to a few questions about the new book via email. Q: What circumstances led you to write this book? A: My grandson, James Daughton of Chanhassen, en- joyed my telling “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” start- ing before he was 3 years old. He is now 8 years old and has become a “Star Wars” fan. The story morphed to add space war aspects and keep his interest. I felt the result was good enough to interest a broader audience. Q: Describe the book: A: The setting is 100 years hence in Nearwoods, Minn. Global warming has changed Minnesota’s climate to semi- tropical. Humans no longer eat meat, and as a result, ani- mals are less afraid of people. The primary characters in the book are Goldilocks, James and Baby Bear. Goldilocks and James meet the bear fam- ily who know American Bear Language, a combination of bear sounds and mind-to-mind communications. They form a club named for John and Regal Warpspeed, heroes of the Smot War. The club has a goal to make humans aware the Smots may come back. They acquire a decommissioned laser gun, a super weapon used in the Smot War, and put it on display in the Nearwoods library. The Smots learn of this and plan to take the gun as a model to make many more and re-invade Earth. The Warpspeed Club finds a way to warn authorities in time to stop the theft, although they come perilously close to failure. James has to concentrate very hard to communicate in ABL, and his grades improve. Grandson James also had a problem with this, and I hope there was a lesson in this for him. Baby Bear stutters when excited, and Goldilocks teaches him to make up a song to get his message across if he feels an attack coming on. His favorite song is “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad.” Q: Are any Twin Cities locations highlighted in your book? A: Nearwoods is modeled after Chanhassen where James lives. The li- brary and Byerly’s and the police station are in the story. Q: Have you written any other books? A: I have written a memoir and a second children’s book coming out next spring, “A conversation with a Butterfly.” I also wrote technical things — some 80 papers, chapters in three books, and 40 patents. I have submitted a short story to the Writer’s Digest and am cur- rently writing “Travels with Della and Jim.” I am a member of the Western Suburbs Writers Group. Q: What is your connec- tion to Eden Prairie? A: I have lived in Eden Prai- rie for about 15 years. A com- pany I founded, NVE Corp., is in Eden Prairie. I retired from it about six years ago. Q: What is your favorite line in the book? A: My favorite line is from James who says, when Goldi- locks dares him to do some- thing against common sense, “I can be brave when I have to be.” And he proves he can be at the end of the story. Q: Where does the title come from? A: The idea for Smots is my own. However, a person from Beaver’s Pond Press urged me to lengthen the title to catch the interest of potential readers — so we collaborated on the title. Q: Where can residents buy the book? A: Residents can buy print copies now at Beaver’s Pond Press, an Edina Publisher. Books can be purchased now on Amazon and at Barnes and Noble. Q: Anything else you’d like to add? A: Kevin Cannon did a ter- rific illustration job.
