Ratan Naval Tata(born December28th 1938) is the present chairman of Tata GroupsIndia’s largest conglomerateestablished by his family.

About RATAN TATA….

• First child of Naval and Soono Tata.• Parents divorsed in mid 40’s when RATAN TATA was 7.• Studied in all boy’s Campion school in India and

graduated from Cornell U.S.A. in 1962.• Advanced management program from HBS in 1975.• Back to India on grandmother insistence and joined

the TATA groups.• Appointed as Chairman of TATA groups in 1991.

Joined in 1962….

• Ratan Tata would probably have stayed on in the US after

training as an architect at Cornell University.

• He has an offer from IBM,but the son of Naval Tata and nephew of JRD TATA couldn’t work outside the group.Hence in 1962 RATAN TATA joined the family business, working on the Tata Steel shop floor at Jamshedpur, just like one of several thousand employees.

Journey from 1991…..

• When he took over as TATA Group chairman on march 25th 1991, critics were loud.

• RATAN TATA was considered to mave gained his position purely on the strength of his surname.

• Nearly 21yrs later, Ratan Tata took the TATA group to the top globally.

• Tata Group revenue is 40 times the 1991 level i.e. Rs.3.46 lakh crore.

His Strategies…..

• Promoted seven hi-tech businesses under Tata Industries in the eighties – Tata Finance, Tata telecom, Tata Keltron, Hitech drilling services, Tata Honeywell, Tata Elxsi and Plantek.

• Management consultancy McKinsey was brought on board to help with the reorganization.

• Ratan Tata also paid attention to brand TATA. By 1998, there was a single group logo.

Corporate Spurs

• Tata Consultancy Services went to public and Tata Motors was listed on theNew York stock exchange.

• On January 31st 2007, Ratan Tata successfully pulled off one of the biggest acquisition (i.e. Corus Group) of Indian corporate history.

• Another feature of success got attracted with this man when he presented the latest Tata four wheeler model Tata Elegant at Geneva on March 6th 2007.

Awards and Recognition….

• He is also the chairman of two of the largest private sector

promoted philanthropic trust in India.

• Member Global business council on HIV/AIDS and the programmed board of the Bill & Milinda Gates Foundation’s India AIDS initiative.

• Government of India honored Mr. Ratan Tata with one of its highest civilian award, Padma Bhushan, on Republic Day on 2000.

• He has also been conferred an honorary doctorate in business administration by the Ohio State University .
