► What are the main features of this course?Students are encouraged to become responsible borrowers, sensible savers and have an appreciation of the need for financial planning throughout their life.

The course prepares students for further study through the core skills of critical analysis and evaluation, synthesis, verbal communication (through classroom discussion) and written communication.

Students will gain an appreciation of why money is important through focusing on what money is; attitudes to it, and how it can affect life choices.

Students gain the ability to plan and manage their financial needs, with focus on the importance of the need to budget for future aspirations and life events.

► Indicative group size: 20

► How is the course assessed?Two exams – January and May. Exams are split into two sections, Section A is a multiple on-line exam (35%) and Section B is a written paper with a pre-seen case study. End of year 1 results/grade is carried forward to year 2 – Diploma in Financial Studies. One re-sit opportunity is available for each part of the exam. Certificate equivalent to one AS level and Diploma equivalent to one A level.

► Where can I go next?The financially related content of this qualification provides a foundation for continued study within the finance sector and a wide range of other business-related disciplines; many students go on to study subjects such as accounting, business, finance and banking at university or through further vocational training.

SUBJECT OVERVIEW

Certificate in Financial Studies (CeFS) provides a comprehensive introduction to personal finance. Its purpose is to prepare young people for further study through the development of the core skills ofcritical analysis and evaluation, synthesis, verbal communication(through classroom discussion) and written communication.

CeFS develops the knowledge and skills required for young people tomake informed financial decisions by introducing them to the risks andchallenges involved in personal finance and the tools for effectiveplanning. Within this, it provides a solid basis for creating financial inclusion, by exploring social-economic trends and their relationship

with an individual’s circumstances and attitudes.

There are 4 externally examined units which equate to 1 A level atthe end of year 2. In year 1 Units 1 & 2 are completed and Units 3 & 4in year 2.

Visits to London to the Bank of England and other Financial sectors isarranged during year 2 with a ‘Future Aspirations Event’ in year 1.

For example, in the travel market we have seen the emergence of Jet2, the decline of Thomas Cook, and First Choice and TUI merging.

Business investigationSelect one business that you are interested in that you have not already looked at in the task above. Conduct some research and produce a reportthat includes:

• Name of the business• History of the business• Current and any former types of ownership• What it produces• The sector it operates in• Market data on the business, i.e. its market share, turnover, profit levels• Factors that may influence the levels of demand and supply for this

► What are the main features of this course?This course introduces a variety of business concepts in a vocational “real world” context using our links with real businesses. The Level 3 Certificate is an AS equivalent which can be taken into the second year as a Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma.

You will complete 3 mandatory (plus 1 optional) units across the two years:• Exploring Business • Developing a Marketing Campaign• Personal and Business Finance• Recruitment and Selection (optional)

► Indicative group size: 20

► How is the course assessed?The course will be assessed through an externally assessed exam for the marketing unit and the finance unit and written assessments for the other units.

► Where can I go next?This Business Studies course provides a good basis for your future studies and employment. Wherever you work, you will always be surrounded by Business Studies. You may also progress onto Extended Certificate.

SUBJECT OVERVIEW

The Pearson BTEC Extended Certificate is aimed at students whowish to combine a BTEC vocational course alongside academic A levels and /or other vocational courses.

It is equivalent to one A level and is accepted by major universities.

Students study 4 units across the 2 years. (Exploring Business, Developing a Marketing Campaign, Personal and Business Finance, Recruitment and Selection)

Students learn through a variety of methods including case studies,audio-visual resources, visits to business organisations and guestspeakers.

Students are assessed through external exams and coursework assignments which require them to produce reports, presentations, etc.

What are the main features of this course?This is a 2-year practical course. Students learn by completing projects and assignments based on realistic workplace situations.

The Level 3 Extended Diploma is equivalent to three A-levels.

There are seven Mandatory units:• Exploring business• Developing a marketing campaign• Personal and business finance• Managing an event• International business• Principles of management• Business decision making

There are also six optional units.

► Hours of lessons per week: 15

► Indicative group size: 24

► How is the course assessed? Written Reports, Presentations, Individual and Group Assessments, creation of Real Business Documents (financial documents, newsletters, leaflets, posters). Course will also be assessed through externally assessed exams for 4 of the units.

► Where can I go next? Business Studies provides a good basis for your future studies and employment. Wherever you work, you will always be surrounded by Business Studies.

SUBJECT OVERVIEW

The Peasron BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Business enables students to study a wide range of Business topics and is ideal preparation for students who wish to either progress onto university orapprenticeships and employment.

This two year course requires students to complete 13 business related units (6 in year 1 and 7 in year 2). Students study all of thecore elements of business such as Marketing, Finance, Management and Human Resources, while also developing their knowledgefurther through more specialist units. Students learn through a varietyof methods including case studies, audio-visual resources, visits to

business organisations and guest speakers.

Students are assessed through external exams and coursework assignments which require them to produce reports and presentations etc.

In the level 2 Diploma, students study a range of core Business topics for example:

Enterprise in the Business World - This unit introduces you to the language and terminology used in business. It explores what businesses do, trends that affect them, how they operate and the factors that influence their success.

Finance for Business - In this unit you will explore the types of costs that businesses incur, from the initial start-up costs involved in setting up a business to the ongoing daily costs of running the business.

Principles of Marketing - In this unit you will consider why companies participate in marketing activity. You will look at the different types of target markets and how marketing activity differs across these areas.

The course is assessed through exams and coursework and is ideal preparation for students wishing to progress onto the Level 3 Business Extended Diploma.
