The beauty of Andover has encouraged me to try and capture our town in my paintings.” Passionate about her art, her town and her family, Janet Hamlin is the featured artist of the Andover Guide.

Hamlin is best known for her watercolors of iconic Andover landmarks, like the gazebo in the Park (on the cover of this issue) and the Old Town Hall. She also does commission work, mostly portraits of local families or their homes, and has a line of museum-quality note cards of her paintings.

She grew up splitting her time between upstate New York, where her father was a French professor at Hamilton College, and her mother’s native France. An Andover resident for the past 11 years, she loves to paint the local scenes of wherever she’s lived. “My hands are connected to my eyes, what I see inspires what I draw.”

Hamlin has a degree in Fine Arts from Hamilton College. “I have always painted, studied art, and as a child was dragged to museums by my parents.”

When asked how long it might take to do a commissioned work she said, “forty years of training and several days of painting. When I start a painting I work straight through. The world disappears around me and I get pulled into my work.”

The most important people in Hamlin’s life as an artist are her “forever supportive friends and family and most importantly my husband, David Schleifer, who I have been with for 30 years and who has always believed in me as an artist. My two sons are also very involved with critiquing my work.” Charlie is a 9th grader at Andover High and Jack is a 5th grader at High Plain Elementary.

“This past winter has afforded me more time to challenge myself and I started working in oils again.” Starting with animals and still life, Hamlin is now painting Andover scenes in oils, including a beautifully realistic Haggetts Pond Farm painting. “Watercolor paints can sometimes create their own textures, but with oils you can really control the canvas.”

Hamlin has done shows at local schools, Memorial Hall Library, Enterprise Bank, the old Blue Cow and she exhibits her work every year at Art in the Park. “Andover residents and shop owners have been so kind and given me such positive reinforcement. It has been a wonderful experience that always makes me appreciate this town.”

Haggetts Pond Trail Enter at Haggetts Pond Rd1/16 mi from the Rte. 133 intersection. There are 2 trail options. Follow the main trail straight which ends at High Plain Rd or bear right at the end onto the trail that loops around Haggetts Pond on the north side. The trail ends near the water treatment plant on Rte. 133. The terrain is fl at and the views of the pond are wonderful, especially in the fall.

Cochran Wildlife Sanctuaryat Phillips Academy. Access at the end of Chapel Ave off Rte. 28. During the spring the Rhododendrons and Mountain Laurel are in full bloom. The main trail traverses around a pond in the middle of the sanctuary. There are wide smooth trails with a good variation of elevation changes that ascend through hemlock groves.

Andover Village Improvement Society (AVIS) owns over 1000 acres on 25 Reservations open to the public for walking. See avisandover.org
