Introduction
Message from the PublisherThe first issue of The Business Finder is here! Not only have we survived it, we have had a blast putting it all together.
People often ask why we picked Whangarei as a place to settle down. Maybe these people have become blasé to the absolute raw potential that we have on our
doorstep. You will search far for more beautiful beaches, the locals are friendly and welcoming to newcomers and I see this as a place where I can raise my children and grow old.
A BIG thanks to everybody involved in making this first issue a success and great experience!
Thanks to the business community of Whangarei who supported me from day one. Being spoilt in your choice for advertising, I really appreciate you picking The Business Finder.
May 2014 be the year each of you want it to be!

In an emergency situation, are you prepared? Do you have food and water and resources to look after yourself and your loved ones
up to 3 days without any outside help? This is the reality of a civil defence emergency so it’s
better to be ready!
Be Prepared, Look After Yourself and Your Loved OnesIn an emergency situation, are you prepared? Do you have food and water and resources to look after your-self and your loved ones up to 3 days without any outside help? This is the reality of a civil defence emer-gency so it’s better to be ready!
Do you know the hazards that may affect the Whangarei district? The 3 major hazards for the district are:
• Flooding
• Tsunami
• Pandemic (disease)
Preparing a home and / or get away kit is recommend-ed. Storing water, 3 litres per day per person, torch, firstaidkit,face/dustmasks,essentialmedicinesanda radio with spare batteries are some of the recom-mended items. Looking after pets and animals is also important; make sure you have what you need to look after your animals too.
Northland Tsunami sirens are tested on the Sunday at the beginning and end of Daylight savings at 09.20am. Tsunami sirens mean ‘Seek Further Information’ about the situation so you can make an informed decision on how to respond. In some cases there may not be time to sound sirens, so learn about the natural warn-ing signs of a tsunami, including the ground shaking for longer than a minute, loud roaring sound like a jet engine and the ocean going in and out unusually fast. If you notice any of the natural warning signs, move to higher ground immediately.
There are other hazards which can strike anytime, for further information to help in being prepared here are some useful websites:

Foreword from Mayor Sheryl Mai
Whangarei is open for business.
Being the third most diverse economy in the country, our District is large enough to offer a broad range of retail outlets, eateries, crafts’ and trades’ people, industries and public sector organizations, while still retaining that ‘small town’ pride in a job well done.
Our businesses and their commitment to customer service are the region’s economic lifeblood, and your patronage of them boosts the quality of life for all who live here. They provide employment and circulate money around the district, with some also sponsoring local projects and community groups.
As our businesses help us, Whangarei District Council wants to assist them. Over the next ten years, businessandeconomicdevelopmentwillreceivesignificantCouncilinvestment, andwearecommittedto working with industry, the community and public sector organisations to form alliances and promote growth for both new and existing businesses.
The aim is to create a healthy business environment in Whangarei, and we are aided in that by the availability of affordable commercial land and premises, a growing population, our proximity to Auckland, a foundation of established companies, the largest natural deep water port in New Zealand and our enormous tourism potential and friendly people.
These all add up to well supported businesses, which make for happy customers. A contented customer is a repeat customer, hopefully also patronising other businesses in the vicinity or of a similar nature.
That’s where the Business Finder will prove useful. Newcomers to our district, people committed to employinglocals, orthosewholiketoshoparoundbeforebuyingwillfinditparticularlyvaluable–andeasy.
The Whangarei business community is now on hand any time you need it. You’ll be amazed at the services and retail possibilities available, and I encourage you to make use of them and this book often.
Thatwayweallbenefit.
Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.

Whangarei The first European settler to come to the Whangarei area was a Scotsman named William Carruth, a trader who arrived in 1839 and was later joined by Gilbert Mair and his family. For the most part, relations between the settlers and local Maori were friendly, but in February 1842, all settler farms were plundered in revenge for transgres-sions of tapu.In April 1845, during the Flagstaff War, all settlers fled from Whangarei. Most of the original settlers never returned, but by the mid 1850s there were a number of farmers and orchardists in the area. From 1855, a small town developed, driven by the kauri gum trade. Today’s ‘Town Basin’ on the Hatea River was the original port and early exports included kauri gum and native timber followed later by coal from Whau Valley, Kamo and Hikurangi. Coal from the Kiripaka field was exported via the Ngunguru River. By 1864, the nucleus of the present city was established.Fire bricks made from fire clay deposits near the Kamo mines supported a brick works over several decades. Good quality limestone was quarried at Hikurangi, Portland, and Limestone Island, and initially sold as agricultural lime and later combined with local coal to produce Portland cement at the settlement of Portland on the south side of the harbour. Local limestone is still used in cement manufacture but the coal is now imported from the West Coast of the South Island.Whangarei was the most urbanised area in Northland towards the end of the 19th century, but grew slowly in the 20th century. The district slowly exhausted most of its natural resources but was sustained by agriculture, especially dairying. Shipping was the main transport link until the North Auckland railway line reached the town in 1925, and the road from Auckland was not suitable for travel in poor weather until 1934. These terrestrial travel routes forced a rapid decline in coastal shipping but stimulated Whangarei to become the service centre for Northland. The population was 14,000 in 1945, but grew rapidly in the 1960s, incorporating Kamo and other outlying areas. In 1965, Whangarei was declared a city. Its population the following year was 31,000.The second half of the twentieth century brought the es-tablishment and expansion of the oil refinery at Marsden Point on Bream Bay and the adjacent development of timber processing. A container port could follow, linked by rail to Auckland.
Currently Whangarei has a growing population of 77, 751 people.www.tourism.net.nz/new-zealand/about-new-zealand/regions/northland/whangarei/history.html

Why should you do exercise ? # Exercise controls weightExercise can help prevent excess weight gain or help maintain weight loss. When you engage in physical activity, you burn calories. The more intense the activity, the more calories you burn. You don't need to set aside large chunks of time for exercise to reap weight-loss benefits. If you can't do an actual workout, get more active throughout the day in simple ways — by taking the stairs instead of the elevator or revving up your household chores.

# Exercise combats health conditions and diseasesWorried about heart disease? Hoping to prevent high blood pressure? No matter what your current weight, being active boosts high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or "good," cholesterol and decreases unhealthy triglycerides. This one-two punch keeps your blood flowing smoothly, which decreases your risk of cardiovascular diseases. In
fact, regular physical activity can help you prevent or manage a wide range of health problems and concerns, including stroke, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, depression, certain types of cancer, arthritis and falls.

The rent or buy results for December 2013In December 2013, it takes 29.2% of household take-home pay to service the mortgage and related household costs on a lower quartile priced house.
But it also takes 23.7% of household take-home pay to make the median rent on a 3 bedroom house.
That means in December 2012, it takes 5.5% more of your household income to afford the mortgage than to rent. Of course, this assumes you have saved the deposit to afford a mortgage, and that may well be another big barrier for many.
It takes a household 3.5 years (with a saving rate of 20%) to save a 20% deposit, as now required by most banks.

Careers, Education & Youth
Education is not about grades or qualifications. It is about knowledge and the act or process of acquiring said knowledge.Education optimises your growth potential and aids you in becoming independent enough to begin your own life. You are guided into relying on your own instincts and will become equipped with the information to make good choices and decisions. An educated individual is armed with insight and knowledge with which to actively participate in conversation and discussions as well as to become active functioning members of society. In today’s society, it has become necessary for an individual to be formally educated. From education and knowledge, whether formal or informal, careers are born. A career becomes a key factor in creat-ing our identity. Thus we can deduce that education forms part of the foundation of our identity and the people we become.Development and learning, both personally and professionally, are ever crucial aspects of the path to self discovery and actualisation. There is never a wrong time to begin to make improvements to your life and situation. Gaining knowledge through education is never a wrong place to start.
When you are educated, you will be more employable. This not only makes you independent but also helps you create the life you want to live.

Childcare
31
Whether you choose a formal childcare centre, fam-ily day care, or in-home care, there are some basic
things you should know and insist upon. To help you make this all-important decision, we’ve talked to mothers and other experts who have been in the childcare trenches. Here are eight ways to size up a childcare option:
1 Look down. When you’re visiting a po-tential site, pay attention to how the staff in-teracts with the children. Ideally, a caregiver
should be on the floor playing with the kids or holding one on her lap. In their early years, ba-
bies need close, loving, interactive relationships with adults in order to thrive. That’s why it’s espe-
cially important that babies’ first caregivers be warm and responsive, and that even in group care, infants and older ba-bies get a healthy dose of one-on-one time.
2 Ask for a commitment. Babies need consistent, predict-able care. It helps them to form a secure attachment to their car-egivers. If you’re looking at an in-home caregiver, request that the person you’re considering make a one-year commitment to the job. If you’re considering a centre, find out how long the current caregivers have been working there and how much turnover the centre usually experiences.
3 Do a policy check. Find out whether you share parenting philosophies on topics such as discipline (Do the caregivers use time-outs, scoldings?); television (Is the TV on all day or used sparingly, if at all?); feeding (What snacks or drinks are provid-ed for older babies?); sleeping (When are naps offered? How are fussy babies put to sleep?); and so forth. Inquire about the sick-child policy (What symptoms prevent a child from attending?). Also ask whether there’s a backup plan should the family day-care provider or in-home caregiver get sick and be unable to work. The more questions you ask early on, the less likely you are to be unpleasantly surprised later.

4 Drop by and spy. While word-of-mouth referrals from other parents or trusted resources are important, you need to look at a place for yourself to assess whether it meets your needs. Of course, any childcare environment should be kept clean, child-proofed, and well stocked with sturdy books and toys that are age-appropriate. Other details to consider: When older children share the space, toys with small parts (choking hazards) should be kept away from younger babies. Ideally, infants and babies should have their own area where they won’t get “loved” too much by older toddlers. A room or separate area dedicated solely to swings and bouncers may look appealing at first glance, but keep in mind that growing babies need plenty of floor time to de-velop and strengthen their muscles. If possible, try to visit the same centres at different times of the day to get a sense of how the staff interacts with the children and what the routine is. You may want to consider popping in unannounced a few times af-ter you’ve enrolled your child, just to see how things are going. Sometimes your visits will confirm that the place is right for you, but sometimes they’ll be a real eye-opener.
5 Keep talking. Until your baby can talk, you will be relying on what the caregiver tells you about your child’s day. Make sure you can communicate comfortably with each other. When you first hand off your child in the morning, you should tell the car-egiver how your little one slept the night before, if he is teething, and whether he ate breakfast. At the end of the day you’ll want to know similar information, such as the number of diapers he went through, when he napped, and if he seemed happy overall. It’s always preferable to speak to the caregiver in person. If that’s not possible, ask if there’s a convenient time to phone, perhaps at nap time.
6 Problem-solve pronto. It’s inevitable that you’ll experi-ence conflicts with your caregiver, both large and small. Address problems right away rather than ignoring them until they grow out of proportion. Some issues can be resolved quickly; others may require more discussion. Whatever the conflict, treat the car-egiver in a respectful manner, but don’t be afraid to speak up. When broaching a difficult subject, ask the caregiver’s opinion, and hear her out. As the parent, you have the final word with an in-home caregiver, but you’re more likely to elicit cooperation if the caregiver knows she has been heard. For example, instead of demanding an earlier nap time to make bedtime easier, ask the caregiver if she has ideas about how to adjust your baby’s schedule so he won’t grow so overtired in the evening.
7 Trust your gut. Every parent knows when something doesn’t feel quite right. You may be turned off by a centre everyone in town raves about or clash with a highly recommended sitter. If that happens, keep searching. Babies deserve, and thrive under, good, nurturing care. If something just doesn’t feel right about your situation, investigate other options.
8 Be open to change. You’re not married to a particular per-son or situation, and if things don’t work out, you can always make a switch. Yes, you want consistency for your baby, but that doesn’t mean you can’t alter arrangements. Babies are resilient; as long as they’re having a positive experi-ence with their new caregiver, they’ll be just fine.No matter what your work hours, you are still your child’s essential caregiver -- the most consistent source of love and support in her life. Under your care and guidance, along with the help of your well-chosen caregivers, your baby will flourish and grow into a happy, healthy child

Uber Group was established in 2003 to provide wireless broadband to remote Northland communities. It has paved the way for high speed, reliable in-ternet through the rugged, previously
underserved communities of North-land’s rural areas where larger telecom-
munication companies had been unable to connect their services. Uber now provides both wireless and fibre broadband packages (includ-ing phone) to over 1,000 residential and business customers in Northland. Uber’s key features are the speed and reliability of its broadband services, high maximum data caps, competitive monthly pricing and installation fees, high end technology which minimises customer faults calls, and its locally-based staff and contractors.
Uber owns and runs its own wireless network which now covers around 80% of the land area of Northland, from Snells Beach and Warkworth right up to Te Kao in the north; and has been a pre-ferred provider of Northpower’s ultrafast |fibre broadband services in Northland since 2011.
Ultracom is one of Northland’s and New Zealand’s most innovative broadband internet companies offering a full range of Copper, Wireless and Fibre Optic communication services focused on the individual needs of each of the residential, small business, education, health, corporate and govern-ment sector markets.
We are NZ owned and operated, employ locals, utilise local businesses and shop locally wherever we operate. We do this to provide you with the personal touch that you deserve and to ensure that whatever you need we are on your doorstep to assist - whatever it takes.

Connect to Northpower Fibre in 2014May 2014 marks the date Whangarei becomes New Zealand’s first official ultra-fast broadband UFB city – two years ahead of any other city in the country. In little over three years Northpower Fibre will have built a world-class broadband network to more than 19,000 premises – meaning over 22,000 Whangarei residents can connect quickly and easily to the future of broadband. The Northpower Fibre network is already the fastest in New Zealand and very soon it will be even faster. While global broadband statistician New Index has revealed Whangarei as having a nation-leading broadband speed of 24.67 megabits per second, the network is capable of speeds much higher.Numerous broadband providers operating on the Northpower Fibre network are currently offering speeds of at least 100 Mbps, however, the Northpower Fibre network is capable of far greater speeds. In fact, gigabit speeds are now on the horizon which will change Whangarei’s communications landscape yet again. You only have to talk to local businesses who have switched from copper broadband to Northpower Fibre’s UFB network to understand the efficiency gains fibre provides. Not only is the connection process quick and easy, UFB is fast, reliable and is also reducing business costs for those who are on it. Many businesses on the Northpower Fibre Whangarei network have reported efficiency lifts of over 20% since switching to fibre broadband. The Director of Whangarei business Plus Chartered Accountants, Brent Martin, says businesses not on fibre broadband are missing a great opportunity for growth.“I have seen what it has done for my business and it is hard to comprehend how we operated without fibre,” says Mr Martin.“It saves an immense amount of time because staff are not waiting for pages to open like when we had a cop-per connection. It has also allowed us to operate in the cloud and make cloud services available for clients to log into. Anyone serious about growing their business and improving profitability would be foolish not to be on fibre.”Northpower’s Network General Manager Graham Dawson says fibre is a game-changer for Whangarei.“I would strongly encourage local businesses to get on board - once they are on fibre they will wonder how they survived without it. We haven’t even scratched the surface of the capabilities of fibre broadband,” says Mr Dawson. Now, for those not already on fibre (and well over 1000 Whangarei residents are), connecting to the Northpower Fibre UFB really is a very simple process. Simply go to www.northpowerfibre.co.nz, go to the coverage tab, type in your address and you’ll find out if fibre is outside your door. From there, simply go to ‘Our Partners’ tab and decide on a Retail Service Provider (broadband provider), make a call and enjoy the immense benefits of ultra-fast fibre – speed, convenience, fun, online gaming, high defini-tion video conferencing, video on demand, cloud computing applications and much more. Any problems finding a broadband provider, simply phone Northpower on 0800 667 847.
#In late 2013 Northpower Limited was presented with a major international broadband accolade - the 2013 Calix Innovation Award for ‘Fibre Transformation’ - at a ceremony in Las Vegas, USA. Northpower was also voted New Zealand’s ‘Lines Company of the Year’ at the 2013 Deloitte Energy Excellence Awards.

Tips to Reduce Your Chance of an Audit
Each year the Internal Revenue Service audits — or, as it puts it, examines — approximately 1 percent of all tax returns filed, and the selection criteria are fuzzy at best.
Be honestHonesty is a pretty good policy in general, but the last person you want to catch you lying is an IRS agent. Pretty much the best thing you can expect is a financial penalty, but if you press your luck there’s no ruling out criminal penalties.
Lying in this case also means the intentional with-holding of information. Not reporting all of your income to the IRS is about as classic a tax offense as you can get. If you fail to report all your income and the IRS catches you, expect to pay back taxes and some penalties at minimum.
39
A common area where otherwise upstanding citizens are sometimes tempted to lie is when they lose money through a hobby, and try to pass off the losses as business losses. Sometimes it can be hard to distinguish between a hobby and a start-up, and sometimes a hobby turns into a business. This ambiguity or the transition from one to the other can encourage fudging. If you’re on the fence, consult a professional.

Getting Started in Investing
Today’s investor faces many choices, so before jumping in, carefully consider your options.
Investments can be in shares, bonds, property, bank deposits, domestic or international assets, directly invested or through managed funds. Investors should also consider retirement savings.
Before making any investment, it’s best that you undertake a thorough review and analysis of your goals and circumstances. Take some time to think about and note down your answers to the following questions.
Investment goals: What goals do you have? Why do you want to invest? Are you saving for retirement, do you want to be mortgage free, have you planned an interna-tional holiday, or are you saving for your child’s education, or as part of your estate planning?
Income needs: Given these goals, what are your estimated current and future income needs? You need to consider your age and also your dependents’ ages. How long do you plan to be working? What other things need to be con-sidered: mortgage payments, annual holiday, a new car? Your income needs will be the prime input into creating an investment strategy.
Timeframe: Over what timeframe are your goals planned? When do you need to withdraw money? Do you need a regular income flow over a set timeframe, or do you need a lump sum on a specific date? Generally, longer term investments are able to ride out the usual fluctuations in market and investment values.
Risk appetite: Honestly review your appetite for risk—the ‘sleep at night’ factor. Very few investments are guaran-teed. Could you lose some of the funds invested if you knew a percentage was guaranteed? Do you need instant access to your investments?
Investment structures: Is the investment personal or for a family trust? Do you wish to take a hands-on approach or would you like someone else to manage the process for you? Do you have any existing investments, for example a KiwiSaver scheme?
Once your analysis process is complete, you can consider what types of investment best suit your circumstances. An Authorised Financial Adviser can help you with every step of the investment process and provide advice on how best to approach your investment goals.
To arrange a meeting to discuss your investment objectives in confidence, please contact Dirk Mostert on (09)9865180 or email [email protected]. Tips to save money in 2014• Take advantage of cashback and reward credit cards. • Recycle old mobile phones, DVDs, CDs and clothes. You
can also sell any unwanted clothes on sites like Tra-deme.
• Use comparison sites to find the cheapest supermarket prices.
• Use balance transfer credit cards to transfer debt from your current credit card that charges a high rate of inter-est.
• Buy own-brand goods at the supermarket. • Cancel your yearly gym membership and opt for monthly
pay-as-you-go instead if there is a strong likelihood that you will stop going
• Bulk-buy foods that don’t go off, particularly if they are on offer. An open or unopened bottle of tomato ketchup can last up to a year in your cupboard, so if you go through a lot of it, bulk-buying would save you money.
• Switch energy suppliers. Households could save up to $300 if they switch energy suppliers, but millions don’t. In fact, only 14 per cent of homes change their gas and energy tariff each year. The process is simple. You can check to see if you would save with a comparison tool.
• Use discount websites to save on days out. Sites like Grabone, Daily do and Yazoom.
• Cycle/walk to work (if possible) rather than drive or take the train. Getting the bus will often save you money too.
• Grow your own herbs. Keeping pots of herbs in your kitchen can save you money on having to repeat pur-chase packs of herbs.
• Find cheap flights for your holidays next year. Look on sites like grabaseat.co.nz for the best deals.
• Rent a new dress rather than buy one. If you have a big event in 2014 but don’t want to fork out for a new outfit you’ll only wear once, there are a number of websites you can go to to hire a new dress, for a fraction of the cost of a brand new one.
• Share travel to cut costs. Drivers and passengers can benefit from travelling together, with the driver getting contributions for petrol costs, and the passengers sav-ing on expensive train fares.
• Open a savings account. Despite savings accounts pay-ing paltry returns at the moment, if you have money sit-ting in the bank, opening a savings account can provide some extra income.

Golden rules for safe boating• The skipper is legally responsible for everyone on board – be
clear who’s in charge.• Check the marine weather forecast. If in doubt, don’t go out.• Make sure you have enough fuel, and some in reserve.• Keep your motor well maintained.• Don’t overload your boat.• Carry life jackets of the right size for every person on board. If
conditions or the type of boat could pose a risk to passengers, make sure life jackets are worn.
• Show passengers where the safety gear is and how it works.• Keep a good lookout at all times.• Know the area you are boating in – and refer to a navigational
chart.• Don’t drink and drive.• Anchor carefully so your boat doesn’t drag or swing around
and damage other craft.
Treat each sales person as your next customer and you will
never be short of business.

Best Baits When they're feeding, snapper will eat almost anything. However best baits include fresh mackerel, fresh kahawai, pilchards, squid, skip-jack tuna, mullet, shellfish and crabs. For big snapper, try live mackerel, live squid – even live kahawai if they’re not too large – fished near the bottom. Soft baits, jigs and flasher rigs are also very effective on snapper.

No person may take or pos-sess more than 6 rock lobsters (both species combined) on
any one day.
Best Times to Catch snapperEarly morning and evening is the best time for snapper, since many fish feed at night and rely on low light for camouflage, especially in shallow water. Larger fish are easily spooked, so silence and careful presentation pay dividends.
Night fishing can be good, especially if there is some moon, but snapper often go off the bite a couple of hours after the sun goes down.
The tide is important, especially in the shallows; in some harbours, pro-ductive fishing areas dry out completely at low tide. The effect of the tide varies from place to places with most locations fishing better on one tide or the other (incoming or outgoing).
In general, a tide change usually dictates a change of venue, even if it’s to the other side of the rock, and sometimes a change in technique. The fishing is invariably better when the tide is running strongly.
Too much tide makes it difficult to fish effectively and it’s sometimes bet-ter to move out the worst of the tidal run and fish the edges (of a channel, say). Fish seem to prefer these areas, too, perhaps because swimming against a strong tide saps too much energy.
Length measurementFinfish length is measured from the tip of the nose to the Middle Ray or “V” in the tail (as shown in diagram).

The perfect golf swing• On the backswing, pivot your shoulders toward your
spine, shift your weight to the front of your back foot and hinge your front arm up into a 90-degree L-shape.
• On the downswing, release your arm in its L-shaped lever toward the target as you shift your weight to your front foot in one, smooth balanced motion.
Remember how Einstein's theory of special relativ-ity made Newton's law of gravity seem quaint? To golf professionals, the idea that a swing consists of a simple back-and-down pendu-lum action is similarly facile.

Dementia occurs as a result of physical changes in the structure of the brain. These changes can affect memory, thinking, behaviour, personality and emotion. Because dementia is a progressive syndrome, symptoms will gradually worsen. The most common form of dementia is Alzheimer's disease, although there are several other forms. No single factor has been identified as a cause for dementia or Alzheimer's disease. It is likely that a combination of factors, in-cluding age, genetic inheritance and environment are responsible. There are around 50,000 people with dementia in New Zealand and for each of these people, there is a whole network of others around them that are affected too. Alzheimers New Zealand works with people with dementia, their family/whanau, friends and community. People of all ages, ethnicities and intellectual ability can get dementia. While it is more common in people over the age of 65, it can also affect younger people. Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia (50-70%). As the disease progresses, physical changes occur in the structure of the brain. Brain cells die and the brain shrinks, especially in the inner parts of the temporal lobes. Plaques and tangles form in brain tissue and disrupt messages between brain cells, preventing the brain from working efficiently. People with Alzheimer's disease experience a gradual decline in their ability to remember, understand, communicate and reason. Some medications are available, which may mask the progression of Alzheimer's disease in the early stages.
Ten Warning Signs of Dementia1. Recent memory loss that affects daily life. It is normal to forget meetings, names or telephone numbers occasion-
ally and then remember them later. A person with dementia may forget things more often, and not remember them later.
2. Difficulty performing regular tasks. Busy people can become so distracted from time to time that they may leave the potatoes on the stove too long and burn them. A person with dementia might prepare a meal and forget they made it altogether.
3. Problems with language. Many people have trouble finding the right words sometimes. A person with dementia may forget simple words or substitute inappropriate words.
4. Disorientation of time and place. It is normal to forget what day it is or where you are going temporarily. A person with dementia may become lost in their own street, not know where they are, how they got there, or how to get back home.
5. Decreased or poor judgement. Dementia affects a person’s memory and concentration, which can affect their judg-ment. Many activities, such as driving, require good judgment. It is normal to forget where you are going from time to time and take a wrong turn. A person with dementia may forget which side of the road they are supposed to drive on and pose a threat to other road users.
6. Problems with abstract thinking. Balancing a cheque book might be difficult for many of us. A person with dementia might completely forget what the numbers are and what needs to be done with them.
7. Misplacing things. Anyone can temporarily misplace a wallet or keys. A person with dementia might repeatedly put things in inappropriate places.
8. Changes in mood or behaviour. Everyone becomes sad or moody from time to time. A person with dementia can have rapid mood swings, from calm to tears to anger, for no apparent reason.
9. Changes in personality. People's personalities can change a little with age. A person with dementia can become suspicious or fearful, or just apathetic and uncommunicative. They may also experience a loss of inhibition, or be-come over-familiar or more outgoing than previously.
10. Loss of initiative. It is normal for people to tire of housework, business activities or social obligations. A person with dementia can become very passive or require cues to complete daily tasks.

When should women undergo screening mammography?Regular screening mammography is recommended for all women over 40 years of age. 1. Women from 40-50 years should have annual mammography. 2. Women over 50 years of age may continue to have annual mammography or opt to have two-yearly
mammography. If you are unsure which applies to you, discuss this with your doctor. 3. Women who have had a previous breast cancer should have annual mammography. 4. Women who have a first degree relative (ie: their mother or a sister) who has had breast cancer, should
start having mammograms five years in age before their relative was diagnosed. TRG Group practices maintain strict processes to ensure our mammography service meets international quality standards.
What is mammography? Mammography is radiography or x-ray of the breast.
Why is it used? Screening mammography is a wellness test and may detect breast problems before you have any symp-toms or concern.

Arataki Ministries LtdArataki Ministries Ltd, a charitable company, is a non-government organisa-tion (NGO) that supports people who experience mental illness. We are a social
service of the Whangarei Central Baptist Church, and have worked in this field since 1991. We support 140 people who live in their own homes in Whangarei and Kaipara Districts, and we provide 24/7 support to 14 people in our homes in Whangarei. All our work is done under contract to the Northland District Health Board.
Support means that we help people to live well by supporting goal setting, money management, dealing with the health system, transport, understanding their illness, increasing contacts with family/whanau, finding good housekeeping, and doing meaningful daily activity – whatever it takes to build a good quality life.
We consider that all people are of equal value; that good relationships and hope are fundamental needs, and that recovery is available to everyone. The elements of life which lead to good mental health are uni-versal - physical resources such as air, water and food; security needs such as safety, warmth, food, cloth-ing, shelter and work; social needs such as belonging to family/whanau, having friends and mates; spiritual needs including understanding of selves, our place in life, and our access to God if desired; plus esteem needs such as recognition for useful tasks and resilience needs based on good understanding of self and one’s ability for self advancement. Our website www.aratakimin.com further explains the work we do, how we do it, who is eligible, and how to contact us.

Physical HealthOur physical health is connected to our mental health - there is no health without mental health! When we are struggling with our inner lives rather than flourishing, we often find our relationships worsen, as does our physical health, produc-tivity, attention span and capacity to learn and be creative.
Here are some tips for promoting the best conditions for a good night’s sleep:
• Reduce light, noise and extremes of temperature in the bedroom
• Avoid caffeine, nicotine and alcohol before bedtime
• Avoid a heavy meal within two hours of bedtime. However a light snack may help if you are hungry
• Regular exercise late in the afternoon or early evening may deepen sleep, but do not exercise vigorously within three hours of bedtime
• In order to achieve relaxation at bedtime, allow about one hour of quiet activity prior to bedtime such as reading, watching television or listening to music. Do not read, watch television or have radio/music in the bedroom
• Develop a bedtime ritual such as reading or listening to music, clean your teeth, etc. so that your body knows that you are getting ready to go to sleep
• Don’t go to bed too early. That is, don’t go to bed unless you are feeling sleepy. If you try to go to sleep too early before feeling sleepy you will have difficulty in getting to sleep. This may make you feel irritated and frustrated about not feeling sleepy, not falling asleep and anxious about how you will cope the next day.
• Do not stay in bed if you are awake. If you go to bed when you are feeling tired and sleepy but do not fall asleep within about 15 to 20 minutes (estimated time only – do not use clock), get out of bed, go to another room and do something mundane until you feel sleepy again. Repeat the procedure until you fall asleep quickly.
• Get up at the same time in the morning, as this will help to train your body clock. Do not sleep in on weekends or after a late night.
• Try not to nap during the day, as this tends to reduce your sleepiness at night and results in poorer quality sleep during the night.
• Do not worry if you can’t get to sleep at night because worry and anxiety will delay sleep even more. The harder you try the worse it will be. If you get very little sleep one night you will still function the next day although you may be a little more irritable and tired than usual.
• Try to get about 8 hours sleep per night.
To be physically well we need good
nutrition, exercise and sleep.

Saving lives since 1988If you haven’t had first-hand experience with Northland’s life-saving Electricity Rescue Helicopter service, chances are you know someone who has.
Northland’s Electricity Rescue Helicopter service is clearly New Zealand’s busiest air ambulance operation.
Flying up to three flights a day, well over 1,000 patients are transported to safety every year.
That means thousands of lives have been saved since the first flight by the Northland Electricity Rescue Heli-copter in November 1988.
Yet still donations are required every year to help finance the charitable operation, which is ultimately owned by the people of Northland.
Servicing 38% of the length of the North Island’s coast-line, operating 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year, the service is the only 24 hour IFR (Instrument Flight Rule) service in New Zealand. It is backed by the most highly trained paramedics in the country.
Northpower and Top Energy, which have sponsored Northland’s Electricity Rescue Helicopter service since 1988, provide $150,000 in funding annually.
People can donate:• at any Northland ASB Branch

You have cataracts – what now? A cataract is a clouding of the lens inside the eye, causing vision loss that cannot be corrected with glasses, contact lenses or corneal refractive surgery.
As frightening as cataracts might sound, modern cataract surgery usually can restore vision lost to cataracts — and often can reduce your dependence on eyeglasses as well.
Most cataracts are associated with the aging process and are common among older people. Thankfully, modern cataract surgery is one of the safest and most effective surgical procedures - especially if you are healthy and don’t have pre-existing eye conditions such as diabetic retinopathy or macular degeneration. In cataract surgery, the lens inside your eye that has become cloudy from cataract formation is removed and replaced with an artificial lens (called an intraocular lens, or IOL) to restore clear vision. The procedure typically is performed on an outpatient basis using only local anaesthesia and does not require an over-night hospital stay. Most modern cataract procedures involve the use of a high-frequency ultrasound probe that breaks up the cloudy lens into small pieces, which are then gently removed from the eye with suction. To find out more about eye surgery, contact your Ophthalmologist.
Good eye care starts early.Early detection of children’s vision problems is essential to make sure your kids have the visual skills they need to do well in school and other activities.Vision is arguably the most important of the five senses. It plays a crucial role throughout child-hood and beyond. In fact, experts say 80 percent of what children learn in school is presented visually. From infancy on, there are important milestones in your child’s vision development. For example, during the first several months of life, a baby can focus only on objects up close. Those objects will be seen in high contrast colours only, such as black, white and red.By 6 months of age, your child’s visual acuity should be much sharper, with more accurate col-our vision and better eye movement and hand-eye coordination skills. To make sure your child’s eyes are functioning properly and working together as a team during the early formative years, their first eye exam with an optometrist or ophthalmologist at 6 months of age. To find out more about good eye health contact your local optometrist.

When your significant other says it's over, your first instinct may be to seek comfort in a tub of ice cream or a stiff drink. But there are healthier ways of nursing a broken heart including shop-ping.
In a recent survey around 52 percent of respondents said they've engaged in ‘retail therapy,’ the act of shopping and spending to improve one's mood. Both men and women admitted they've opened their wallets when feeling blue. However, this form of therapy can put your finances at risk if it's the only way you can temper your mood, or if you feel guilty about your spending behaviours and don't shop in moderation.
Decisions can be between material items (a pair of shorts versus jeans) or what to consume (a smoothie versus a milkshake). Studies show retail therapy is less effective for feelings like aggression, but Rick says purchases cheap or expensive can help relieve mild depression.

Rural living - www.fire.org.nzRural residents face a higher risk of losing more property from fire than their urban counterparts because fires are not noticed as quickly in sparsely populated areas.Response in rural areas can often take a longer time. Most rural areas in New Zealand are serviced by volunteer brigades. Although this is an excellent service, the time taken to respond to a fire emergency can be longer. Large areas served, imperfect road conditions especially dur-ing winter months, and lack of adequate water supply can delay quick intervention. Many rural dwellers' livelihoods, eg farming, would be seriously at threat if key build-ings such as the milking shed, shearing shed or the family home were destroyed by fire. There are special things rural dwellers need to remember in order to make their properties safer. These include:• Signposting your property. Rural property numbers are invaluable for a quick
response by emergency vehicles• Do emergency vehicles have easy access?• Is there an adequate water supply for use by emergency services?• Can portable pumps be positioned within 7 metres of open water supplies?• Is your firewood stacked away from the house?

Steps you may need to take when someone dies. When the death of a loved one occurs there are some steps you may need to take. These steps will ensure medical and legal professionals carry out their duties so then funeral arrangements can begin to take place.
• Notify the Doctor. If the death has occurred at home you will need to contact the family doctor to certify the death.
• Notify the next of kin and family members. If you are on your own one of your first phone calls should be to a family member or a close friend who can be of immediate support. They may be able to come and be with you or contact other family members for you. Their assistance will take some of the immediate pressure off you.
• Notify the deceased's solicitor or Executor of the will. In some circumstances the deceased may have left funeral instructions in their will they wished to be carried out.
• Phone Morris & Morris to make funeral arrangements, then take some time to think about the family's wishes. There is a common misunderstanding that a funeral must take place within three days of the death. This is not so in most cultures, and you can take as long as you wish or as much time as you need. Often family members come from overseas for a funeral and you may need to allow time for them to arrive.

NZ Fire25% of ALL house fires start in the kitchen• If you must leave the room, TURN OFF the
stove.• Clean your stove grill after each use to pre-
vent the build-up of spilled fats and burnt foods.
• Clean rangehood filters regularly.• Curtains, tea towels, oven mitts and any flammable items
should be kept well away from the cooking area.• Have a fire extinguisher and/or fire blanket correctly located
in your kitchen and make sure you know how to use them.• Never throw water on to a frypan that’s on fire.• Never, ever attempt to carry a burn-
ing frypan outside.• If your frypan is on fire, wet a tea
towel and place it over the pan or use a large flat object (like a chop-ping board) to starve the fire of oxygen.
• If you do have a fire on your stove, try (if you can) to turn the power or gas off either at the stove or at the mains.
• Alcohol is involved in 50% of all fatal fires. So don’t drink and fry, get takeaways delivered instead or use the microwave.

Sitting down for a meal feels like we are doing something special. We celebrate achievements
and special occasions with good food! It is more than just getting your belly full, a restaurant needs to have a special atmosphere, affordable food that is well prepared and a good selection of deserts!

great company and a night off from the washing up, that’s a real treat for me
