• This course is designed to give you confidence in speaking English useful in Business.
• Your progress depends on your own starting level and determination to study hard.
• We will be asked to make telephone calls, answer emails, record messages from voices, changing messages all in English.
• All four skills of Speaking, Reading, Listening and Writing will be used in tests and final examinations
Business English I – Semester I
What will we talk about…..
• We will use the dictation text from the textbook.
• You have one week each time to memorize that text.
• You will present the text to your group and be graded on it.
• If you forget your lines – one of the team members will help you.
Course Assessment
1. Vocabulary tests: 3 tests x 5% = 15%
2. Dictation tests: 3 tests x 5% = 15%
3. Recitation speeches using Business English: 3 tests x 5% =
15%
4. Mini TOEIC Test = 15%
5. Final speech draft on a Business English topic = 10%
6. Final Business English Presentation of the speech = 10%
7. Extensive Reading ERP = 20%
The Vocabulary Tests 3 times - 15%
• These vocabulary tests will be about the topics we are studying.
• Try to memorize them for your speeches.
• The words will relate to the course book
• I want to hear you use them in the speech tests.
The tests will be between 10 – 15 words each time and the level of difficulty will increase from the first to the last test.
The Dictation Tests – 3 times15%
This test is in various forms of Business English:
The Dictation Tests can be:
• A video listening note taking
• An audio Listening or telephone call
• A speech listening by me
Some of the tests will be online, others will be on paper. The listening should be connected to the topic we are studying in the textbook or similar to the topic.
The Recitation Test3 times graded – 15%
What is ‘recitation’?
‘the action of repeating something aloud from memory’.
You have to try to memorize some sentences and repeat them perfectly with a good clear voice.
We will grade it all together as a class.
How we grade……
1. Let’s get into teams of four or five
2. Each member has to choose a section of the text
3. We will listen to each other and grade the speech
4. Then we will divide the scores to make 5%

Mini Toeic Practice Test – 15%
This is a practice test for the Final TOEIC test at the end of the course
To prepare for the test we will be doing a ‘Mini TOEIC ’ test that will include 30 questions from the listening and reading part of the TOEIC Test.
This is just for you to see the paper and how it is done.
Week eight should be the right time for the test.

1-10 minutes after Bell = 1 Late
3 Lates = 1 absence
After 10 minutes = 1 absence but Class sit down is OK!!
