Leap works with young people, giving them the skills to manage conflict in their own lives, reduce violence in their communities and help lead our society.

We are the UK’s only national organisation specialising in the creative management of youth conflict. Our work stops everyday conflict from spiraling into violent and destructive behaviour by helping young people look at the choices they make, understand the consequences of their actions and change course to become role models and leaders.

Too often our society defines young people by the disadvantage they face, or the challenges they present.

At Leap, we believe in their extraordinary talent and potential. Our training is designed to help young people build the courage and resilience to smash their self-imposed, imagined limitations, and to take responsibility for their own words and actions.

2017 was Leap’s 30th anniversary. We were set up in 1987 as a project of the Leaveners, a Quaker community arts organisation. Our first focus was to help young unem- ployed adults deal with conflict through theatre projects. Over time, the work expanded to include young people aged 11-25. In 1998, we were established as an independent charity.

Since the 1990s, we have worked in a range of settings including schools, prisons and in the community. Our record highlights our dynamism in innovation and in implementing successful approaches to preventing and transforming youth conflict.

Successes include:

• In 2018 Leap’s Progression Routes Officer, Jaden Osei- Bonsu, received the Highly Commended award at the UK Youth Awards 2018

• In 2018, Ahmed Moallim, Leadership and Enterprise Project Worker, was shortlisted for the Howard League ‘Criminal Justice Champion’ Award

• In 2018 we were shortlisted for the ‘Charity of the Year’ at the Third Sector Awards

• In 2018 we began a programme to support young people in care and those who care for them

• In 2017 we won the CYPNow ‘Children & Young People Charity’ Award

• In 2017 we were highly commended in the ‘Children and Young People’ category at The Charity Awards

• In 2017 Natasha Aldonza, our young trainer, won the ‘Youth Professional of the Year’ Award at the London Youth Awards

• Initiating work with young offenders in Feltham Young Offenders Institute (1994); we now work with 13 YOIs and prisons across England

• In 2016 we won the ‘Board Diversity and Inclusion Award’ at the Charity Governance Awards, organised by the Clothworker’s Company

• In 2016 our young trustee, Chantal Chang, also won the British Youth Council’s ‘Make a Difference Award’, which recognises young people who have made a real difference in the running of an organisation

• In 2016 we launched two new initiatives: the Peaceful Prisons Project, to pilot and evaluate models for

reducing violence in prisons, and Leadership and Enterprise, a programme that works with groups who are at risk of gang involvement or offending

• In 2015 our course for young people Improving Prospects was rated in the top 10% of programmes evaluated by Project Oracle, London’s first evidence hub on children and youth, funded by the Greater London Authority

• In 2013/14 a Partnership with Sheffield City Council’s Youth Service’s Ending Gang and Youth Violence Programme was created to provide a city-wide training programme for youth practitioners, criminal justice practitioners and other local agencies to develop and deliver a local weapons and gangs education programme

• Following the national riots in 2011 we brought together 30 youth, statutory, justice and community organisations to identify how to work with young people in their communities to build resilience to the threat of public disorder

• We were a full partner of the Community Initiative to Reduce Violence in Glasgow between 2009 and 2010

• We were awarded the pathfinder grant by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (2008) for delivery of a peer mediation conflict resolution programme for and by school pupils in deprived areas of London and Yorkshire

We have taken the decision to focus our efforts only on the futures of those young people who could most benefit from our training; those excluded from school, in the care system, in prisons and youth offender institutions and whose conflict is most likely to draw them along a route of self-directed social exclusion, self-harm, offending andviolence.

Why conflict?

The challenges facing young people

Each and every one of us has conflict in our lives. What’s more, we need it – to produce some of our best work, to build successful relationships, to achieve the best results from our partnerships. It’s from that tension that we can learn about each other’s viewpoints and more clearly understand our own motives. However, if we don’t manage conflict properly, it can deteriorate into destructive cycles of behaviour.

When children become adolescents, they experience dramatic changes in their bodies and their brains. At the same time, the dynamics of their relationships with those around them, from their parents to their friends and from their teachers to their neighbours, all begin to shift as they make the transition to a more independent adulthood. Their lives can become increasingly complex. The stakes are higher than they have ever been, and the conflicts often more intense.

Badly managed, and at its worst, youth conflict can deteriorate into an all too familiar cycle, with frustration, limited aspirations, poor self-esteem and a lack of communication all combining to fuel violence, exclusions from school, self-directed social exclusion, gang activity, weapon carrying, self-harm, imprisonment, drug and alcohol abuse.

But adolescence is also a time of amazing opportunity. This is when young people learn how to manage conflict as they develop the social and emotional capabilities essential for adult life. Young people continue to surprise us and themselves, by achieving excellence in their lives and becoming our next generation of loving parents, inspirational leaders, committed staff and community volunteers, activists and leaders.

Too often our society defines young people by the disadvantage they face, or the challenges they present. Yet, even the most disadvantaged and challenging young people have extraordinary talent and potential. The greatest influence on what they can achieve is not their level of intelligence or ability, but their courage and commitment to breaking cycles of behaviour and reaching their potential.

They also need to take responsibility for their own words and actions – which is affected profoundly by the way in which they respond to difficulties and conflict in their life. With resilience, confidence and application, we can, all of us, surpass our own challenges and celebrate amazing achievements.

As a nation we are failing young people – many young people in the UK are caught in destructive cycles of badly managed conflict.

• In 2017, 11.4% of young people (aged 16-24) were notin employment, education or training. Young people who are not in education or training are 20 times more likely to commit a crime

• Knife crime is increasing and violence in prisons, including young offender institutes has soared, withassaults up by 14% and assaults on staff increasing by 25% in 2017

• In 2017 the number of young people in careincreased for the ninth year in row to 72,670, a rise of approximately 10,000 since 2007

• In 2016 88% of boys in custody had been excluded fromschool, 73% had truanted at some time, and 39% were 14 or younger when they last attended school

• In 2016 only one in eight children from low-incomebackgrounds were likely to become a high earner as an adult

• Since 2012, an estimated 45% of local authorities havemade cuts of at least 30% to services for young peopleand the number of places for young people in youthservices has fallen by 140,000

Our current 2017-2019 strategy sets out how we will grow the scale and sustainability of our work and its impact. Our strength lies in the targeted nature of our work and we will focus on four ecosystems where young people are most likely to struggle with conflict, specifically young people who are:

• in care

• not in mainstream education

• in local communities demonstrating destructive behaviour, including those in gangs

• in prison and other institutions in the secure estate.

As youth services become more fractured we are looking beyond our core training. Through highly integrated partnerships we will support our young people to become successful adults, whether that means finding employment or playing a fuller role in society.

We will build on our expertise and introduce four new work streams: single gender work (with young women and young men); identity, prejudice and extreme thinking; bullying (including online); and violence in prisons.

Our strategy also aims to increase the reputation and profile of Leap, through expanding our evidence base, building high quality relationships, and increasing our investment in monitoring and evaluation.

Our strategic aims:

• Give young people and the adults who work with them the skills to manage the conflict in their lives, reduce violence and take advantage of opportunities to thrive in adulthood

• Achieve excellence in our delivery

• Develop models of high-impact work with young people, and the adults, professionals and organisations that support them

• Invest in developing Leap’s systems, skills, culture and knowledge

• Secure income for our work sustainably

• Develop a well-targeted, high-quality profile

• Develop our influence on policy and practice

Our 2017-2019 strategy and immediate plans
