BUSINESS CONTINUITY PLANNING ASIA PTE LTD Booklet - BCP Asia.pdf · CXO Round table Discussion...

1
44 45 On 24th September 2015 evening, the haze worsened and PSI hit more than 300. Ministry of Education (MOE), for the first time in history, declared the closure of schools in Singapore for the following day and the school continuity plans was activated. The same evening, Singapore Labour Minister reminded that business was as usual for working adults. Delivery services from fast food chains were also stopped due to high PSI. Unlike a disaster scenario where Business Continuity Plan can be immediately activated, what best action can the Management take? Staff members may look forward to a day of closure – but is this the best for businesses when the customers and competitors are still in operation? In many businesses and organisations, there may be many differing opinions and visions for the organisation’s Business Continuity programme between the management and the working group. Management has the strategic overview and direction for the organisation and may wishes to steer the program to meet these objectives. The business continuity working group may not be sharing the same vision as what management does, this lead to the program implemented primarily based on what they faced. This gap has always existed but was never explored in depth. Whether an organisation new to Business Continuity or one with a plan in place, it is always worth to view the program from various perspectives – and their primary objectives. CXO Round table Discussion Recognising this, BCP Asia is hoping to address this gap during the recent 13th Asia Business Continuity Conference (ABCC) held on 15-16th October 2015. We invited CXO level senior management from various industries to join us in a closed- door roundtable discussion on the role of the BCM programme within an organisation; the intention for having a BCMS system; their perspective on how BCMS meet their strategic objectives. Through hearing their varied views, it would also benefit the BCM industry for setting future resiliency initiatives. The discussion was facilitated by Business Continuity Institute (BCI) Global Chairman, Mr David James-Brown, and members include United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) Chief for Asia and the Pacific, CEO of ComfortDelgro Taxi Business (Comfort Transportation Pte Ltd and CityCab Pte Ltd), CEO of Cleaning Express Group, COO of SingHealth Group and moderated by Henry Ee, Managing Director of BCP Asia. Other CXOs who attended the session but not listed here have yet to confirm at the time of publishing this article. BCI Horizon Scan 2015 Survey Report In the BCI Horizon Scan 2015 Survey Report that was released earlier this year, there were differing trends when looking at a global level and at the Asian level. Globally, one of the top 3 emerging trends was the potential emergence of a global pandemic. In contrast, on the Asian level, the potential emergence of a global pandemic was not the top 3 emerging trends. It was the loss of key employees that were a main concern for the future. These viewpoints were also discussed during the closed- door discussion. Other discussion topic includes the influence of social media as an emerging trend. With the rapid advancement of technology and the increasing pervasiveness of social media, we have all become highly interconnected and integrated. This could work for and against the BCM programme as the extensive spread of information would accelerate the distribution of information, and yet at the same time, it would also prove difficult to contain information within the organisation. During the discussion, we explored and discussed the good, the bad and the opportunities social media can be open to the BCM programme. White Paper for download To add a contrasting view to the topic, we also presented a similar set of questions to the participants of the 13th ABCC in order to gather their opinions as well. Many of these participants are BCM coordinators and practitioners of the same organisations represented by the CxOs. Through this activity, we hope to derive the difference in viewpoint and the thought process of the different groups of people. This would also present an opportunity to review past BCM practices and to set future resiliency initiatives for the industry. We have since published a White Paper online with the findings that was gathered and is available for the public to download. Download our Whitepaper on the findings here: www.bcmconference.com Article contributed by Business Continuity Planning Asia Pte Ltd Consultancy Services: BUSINESS CONTINUITY PLANNING ASIA PTE LTD
