The BCM Institute and the Singapore Business Federation (SBF) had jointly organized the “Implementing an Afford-able and Painless BCM with SS540 Certification” at the institute’s Meet-The-Experts (MTE) seminar. More than 120 members from all industries had benefited from the detailed elaboration by Dr Goh Moh Heng, President of BCM Institute, on how to develop and implement BCM using an “optimized” approach. Dr Goh shared the best practices for business continuity implementation for Small and Medium enterprises (SMEs) and how a SME can keep its investments in both time and resources to the lowest and yet at the same time achieve the BCM and SS540 certification requirements. Following the implementation of BCM presentation, is the funding from the Singapore government. Mr Roland Teo, Deputy Director, Capacity Building Division, SBF, provided an overview of the incen-tives, grants and the application/submission processes un-der the National BCM Programme and how it applies to the organisations.

In attendance was BCM Institute’s certified professional, Ho Chuan Wei, BCCE and Andy Liu, BCCE from British Telecom. They had never skipped an MTE session. Both had indicated that they like the seminar as it had presented them with “the opportunity to meet fellow professionals” and also to hear and learn from the industry’s expert’s first-hand experiences and knowledge. Ravindra, BCCE from the National University of Singapore, added that, “this MTE was focussed on the implementation approach and also to obtain financial grants, it is unlike others, which generally tried to promote their products and services.”

Corporate Guidance of H1N1 Influenza Pandemic Prepareness

More than 100 Business Continu-ity and Human Resources Manag-ers attended, Meet-The-Experts (MTE), Malaysia on 6th August 2009. The session primarily fo-cused on “Corporate Guidance on H1N1 Influenza Pandemic Preparedness”. With the current outbreak of the H1N1 Pandemic Influenza, business continuity planning is critical to protect em-ployees’ health and safety, as well as minimizing the negative impact to businesses and the society. While organizations may have al-ready taken appropriate preven-tive measures to minimize the risk of potential employee exposure, illness, and the spread of H1N1 Pandemic Influenza in the work-place, contingency measures need to be put in place to meet the challenges of possible mass infection and to ensure business continuity. In this seminar , Dr Goh Moh Heng of the BCM Institute shared

how to step up their H1N1 Pan-demic Influenza planning, which includes business continuity plan-ning, workplace safety and health issues, administrative controls, hu-man resources policies, employee assistance services, and actions to take when a case of H1N1 influ-enza virus is confirmed among em-ployees.One of the participants, Bahyah Baku from Bursa Malaysia has a better understanding that, “during the pandemic outreak, we need to have clear guidelines or guidance on what need to be done although we have a pandemic plan in place.” Michael Low of Kompakar CRC added, that the Meet-The-Expert session has provided him with the “Fast-Track” formula to formalize the policies in response to pandem-ic outbreak threats.

Enterprise to Defend from Crisis with Well Prepared Risk Management

[Translated to English from Sin Chew Daily, Malaysia] The economic crisis be-gan from the US and expanded to Europe, Asia and almost every country in the world thereafter. During this time, an enterprise which can survive and continue to progress is tied to its good risk management and business continuity practices! Basically, all banks have limited capital under the attack of an economic downturn. Therefore, an enterprise or company depends on other parties’ financing might to face the risk of an unstable operation due to the high cost of investment. While en-terprises with low debt and high cash may grab the opportunity for acquisition and expansion, the same cannot be said for companies that do not have a good busi-ness continuity practice in place. “The first concern during the economic downturn is to know whether the fund is sufficient. Usually, banks has a risk management committee in the company to manage these risks, and they will rescue the com-pany accordingly,” said Dr. Goh Moh Heng, President of BCM Institute.

BUSINESS continuity plans (BCP) are necessaryfor managing an unexpected crisis, such as the on-going Influenza A, so that businesses can operate as usual. That, however, is not all there is to crisis man-agement, which requires organizations to know how to execute those plans. In Japan, for instance, BCP is viewed in the same light as crisis management. To standardize about 400 terms used in a business con-tinuity management (BCM) course, a training institute here turned to the Wiki community.

The Business Continuity Management Institute runs certification courses on BCM for students in 36 coun-tries. Said BCM Institute president Goh Moh Heng: “Disagreement over BC & DR terminology between professionals are common because they don’t speak the same language and they come from different professional and cultural backgrounds.”Three staff members of the Singapore-based BCM Institute took six weeks to build its BCMpedia Wiki using the open-

Covering the South Asia and Middle East part of the world is supported by BCM Institute India. Since early April this year, BCM Institute India was kept busy with the increased enrolment in their courses. Till Sep-tember 2009, in spite of the recession, BCM Institute in India has seen their way through more courses with more than 80 new participants during the last 5 months. The heightened rate of enrolments was attributed to the resilient Indian and Middle East economies. With the recent terrorist attacks in Mumbai and Kara-chi, this region is placing more reliance on its business continuity and disaster recovery professionals.

The requirement for such professionals by both the government and business sec-tors and with the India being a potential hub for BCM and DR activities, this has generat-ed the demand for more training and certification by BCM Institute. With more and more disas-ters rearing its ugly head, demand for the institute’s certified professionals had increased. The most recent BCM-300: Implementing BCM class was held in Dubai. It was attended by 13 BC professionals from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, the course enables participants to understand BCM best practices through experience sharing among each other. One of the partici-pants, Sandeep Shenoy from Axis Solutions, highlighted that “the course helped him by providing an insight to look at BCM & DR from a customer’s business point of view.”

Dr Goh Moh Heng, President, Business Continuity Manage-ment Institute was invited to share his experience in a special dialogue session at the Singapore Hu-man Resource Institution better known as SHRI. H1N1 Pandemic Influenza Risk

Singapore Businesses told to Stay Alert with Influenza A (H1N1) risk The Influenza A (H1N1) risk seems to have abat-ed in recent days, but health experts told human resource officers from local companies yester-day that they should keep their guard up. The executives from companies large and small were advised to stay vigilant and not assume that the worst cannot happen here, despite the Govern-ment lowering the alert from orange to yellow yesterday. Dr Goh Moh Heng, president of the Singapore-based Business Continuity Manage-ment Institute, cautioned that while there are no reported H1N1 cases here, companies must be prepared as the disruption of business is inevi-table once there is an outbreak. “In my opinion, we are going to be hit by a second wave.

The question is in what form and how severe it

is,” Dr Goh told 1,000 executives-mainly human resource staff-from small and medium-sized companies at the seminar at Suntec City.

He urged firms to maintain strict travel restric-tions and perform what he calls a “quick impact analysis” on critical business functions if they have not done so.” Take a position on what is critical and have a close consultation with the leadership on what must be conducted during an outbreak,” said Dr Goh. He urged businesses to “prepare for a long-drawn outbreak and intermit-tent disruptions”, including fatigue, resignations and loss of staff. Mr Lau Weng Hong, the Minis-try of Manpower’s deputy director, told the semi-nar that the Government is “prepared to meet the challenge”. The Health Ministry has stockpiled enough anti-viral drugs such as Tamiflu, but he added that people should be socially responsible and practise good personal hygiene.
