Dating 101I’ve been out of the dating scene for over a decade now so my “game” may be a little rusty. With that said, I still recall that there are plenty of dating “rules of thumb”. You have the ‘date half-your-age-plus-seven’ rule, the ‘three-date minimum’ rule and the ‘wait three days before calling back’. The list could go on, but I think you get the idea. Each of them has one goal in mind, attempting to leave a lasting impression and secure that next date.

Each interaction or date is a step towards developing a relationship of intimacy, close familiarity or friendship. Sometimes a relationship can even be with a group of people or an organization. Therefore, some of the same rules of dating can be applied to your Chamber Membership. Is your relationship with the Chamber strong? If not, what steps can you take towards reaping the rewards of an organization that is 700+ members strong (a number that can be overwhelming at times, much like a first date) and offers countless programs and benefits?

I have a few recommendations for members that have been meaning to get involved but don’t know where to start—some “dating” advice, if you will. First, is there someone or a group of professionals that you would benefit from meeting? If your “game” has a little focus, meeting that perfect person or group of professionals might not be so daunting. The Chamber Business Directory (www.middletonchamber.com) might be a great place to start narrowing down your scope. Next, take a look at the

Chamber Calendar and try a few different events. The dynamics and benefits of each are very different from one another. Pay attention to the specifics of the event. I’ve found that the make-up of attendees is very different based upon the topic covered. After you have chosen a few events, seek out an Ambassador, a Board Member or the Chamber Staff at the event and let them know who you are looking to connect with. We typically will be wearing a special name badge and are some of the more seasoned relationship-builders in the room.

My final piece of advice for dating the Chamber is to give it time. It takes time to understand what programs, events or people best fit your needs. It took me around two years of membership to fully understand what worked best for me. Seven years later maybe you will be writing about bacon or dating in a Chamber Newsletter. If not, there’s still a lot of fun to be had along the way.

Sincerely,

Jason Guttenberg 2014 Board President

Business Connection - 2

Your restaurants are known for their memorabilia, vintage cars and other displays. What is your role in selecting these items? Nearly all of the memorabilia is from Wisconsin. This isn’t restaurant-in-a-box or a décor package. I go to car shows in Iola, Elkhorn and Jefferson to find cool memorabilia. And we get a lot of stuff from our guests, like the three-wheeler and soap box derby cars that came from Middleton residents.

Our first customer on Nov. 17, 2004 showed up an hour early, handed me a license plate and said, “I’ll give you this license plate if I can be the first one in the restaurant.” The license plate was “B3.” I told him that I had to know the story. He said, “You live in Wisconsin, right? Beer, brats and babes.” I said thank you and bought him a beer. Even though we’re part of a national chain, we are super local.

What is one of the biggest challenges you’ve had in your career or business, and how did you overcome it? We came to town with a brand with a really quirky name, there weren’t ten of them everywhere, and we had to work very hard to develop a brand that started more than 500 miles away in Sharon, Pennsylvania. Initially there was a lot of confusion about the name, at one point we added a tag line on our ads that said “but we don’t do oil changes.” Now we’re well known and people say they’re going to ‘the Lube.’

What do you do for fun? Do you have a family? Favorite vacation spot? My wife Amy and I have a son, William, who is 11. The work of the Lube is never done so I’ve only had two vacations in ten years. We try to do quick getaways to places in Wisconsin like Door County, Eagle River or the Dells.

location, there was a lot of development going on and Greenway Station had just opened.

You’re celebrating your 10th anniversary in Middleton. Looking back, what are you most proud of? I’m extremely proud of being part of the Middleton community and the strong partnerships we have developed. Over the past decade, we’ve raised more than a million dollars for charity with our Bike Nights, Car Cruise-Ins and other events. We support many local sports teams and community organizations, including Safe Harbor in Madison and OccuPaws. We do an annual New Year’s Day dash to raise money for Huntington’s disease. We partnered with Veridian to raise $35,000 to build a new home for a Wisconsin family that was featured on the TV show Extreme Makeover.

I’m also very proud of our employees, who are the reason for our success. Many of them–including more than half of our kitchen staff and several managers–have been with us since we opened.

Building on our success in Middleton, I opened Quaker Steak & Lube restaurants in New Berlin in January 2011 and in Janesville in 2013.

Any changes planned for the future in Middleton? We’re doing an interior remodeling in Middleton and adding a private dining room.

Where do you hope to be 10 years from now? Retired. Just kidding. I’ll probably have one more Quaker Steak & Lube, and I’m looking to come up with a new concept restaurant in the Milwaukee area.

Meet: Scott Acker president, Wi Quaker Steak & Lube

Where did you grow up? What did you want to be when you grew up? What was your first job? I grew up in New Berlin, Wisconsin. I wanted to be a cook. My mom was a school lunch lady, so I hung out with all the school lunch moms. My first job was as a dishwasher at CoCo’s Restaurant in Elm Grove, Wisconsin, when I was a junior in high school.

What was the next step in your career? My next job was chopping cheesesteaks at Steak Escape in the Food Court at West Towne Mall. I worked for a Madison couple who owned five Steak Escapes in Wisconsin and northern Illinois. Eventually I decided I wanted to own one. I left them to open my first store in the Fox River Mall in Appleton in 1996. Then with my business partners we opened 16 more, one in the Brookfield Square Mall and the rest in Ohio.

What led to your opening Quaker Steak & Lube in Middleton? The post 9/11 economy was pretty bad, our sales were falling and mall rents were rising. So in 2004 we sold the Steak Escapes and took on business partners to open the Quaker Steak & Lube in Middleton. Middleton was a perfect
